Parents of the HS Class of 2011 - We're awesome!

I would bet they don’t think they abused anything. Most kids just don’t think that way. This is a good reason why every kid needs condoms and every kid needs to be reminded to use them. There is always a first time, and usually there is no long term planning.

AK: Mind you, my brain shuts down succinctly at 11 pm - I get quiet and annoyed if someone talks to me.

lol AK – I’m the same way. I need a sign like on cabs – Off Duty.

yalemom – I agree – we do sound a little obsessive at times – but for me, the worry is I’ll be a plane ride away and I will have forgotten something that I then have to ship later on, and wouldn’t it be easier to bring down with me the first time?

I already told D to have low expectations for freshman year. I mean honestly, I loved college, but that first year, you never get enough sleep, the food isn’t great or you miss meal time, you’re finding your friends. Sophomore year is better.

AK I hear ya–in this case–leaving helps–though he will meet more aggressive types. I always wonder about the moms of the girls like this–and why they allow their daughters to dress like pole dancers…where is the self respect and when did their s2xuality become the currency of choice?

I hear ya YaleMom … balance in everything…The nice thing is we can be anxious with our friends here and cool/relaxed with our teens as they choose for themselves…

HighHead==Can they rent vans etc? I think they can’t rent ZipCars til they are olders…DH said yes it’s not the way we’d do it, nor the way our kid would do it…we’ll see. Our kiddo sent a message back about the “waiting” and mentioned that at move-in there are groups to help get stuff in and that parents have large vehicles…
Kiddo has 2 a days and a heavy schedule so having a comfy place to head to will be nice.
Gotta ask ?why? wait…What do you wait for??? kwim?

Highhead=Are you buying a fridge or renting one? By the time you add the drop off and pick up fees, its close to the price of buying.

Collage1 Great message!

Classof2015…good pt about expectations.

One message I have stressed to our kids in the past has been you take yourself with you…and you have to be comfortable with you, your boundaries, choices, and to know what you need and why etc. Be true to yourself. Schools, classes, friends, roommates etc change…

I know, me too- I was writing that post to myself as much as anyone on this thread!!!

Every day from now on there will be people who’ve made it to the other side of move-day, cheering for us and telling us it’s not so bad, thank you for coming back and letting us know it will all be okay! :D

p.s. fogfog, good news, kiddos only have to be 18 to rent Zip Cars in the New Haven area:
[Yale University – Zipcar](Yale University Student Car Sharing & Rental | Zipcar at Yale)

^ Cool–I had read on a site–and heard from a friend- whose student is heading to Boston --that they couldn’t rent a car at 18–had to be older. Maybe zipcode depndent?? haha
Helpful–though my guess is Zip cars a tiny?

that describes me as well! I’ve been feeling VERY emotional lately and know that CC is a safe havens for moms like me…

Yes. Love ya, but it feeds my stress, the non-emotional folks make me feel inadequate, the emotional folks make me feel more emotional, it gives me an almost uncontrollable desire to go to Bed Ban and Beyond and overall makes my stomach hurt.

Maybe I even need to stay off the internet altogether, because every page I go to has banner ads at the top for Bed Bath & Beyond, PB Teen, etc. Jeez, if I had been online planning a funeral, would the banner ads all be for caskets and the like?

LOL! Same here. Work has been very very crazy. Why now?? A few late (well past midnight) days - led to a bad migraine yesterday. Still recovering today. Feeling really bad about not being able to do stuff with D. There’s so much to do…so much to do! I am one of those obsessive types that has to have every little detail planned out and I am freaking out since we are nowhere close! We drive down to Cleveland next Friday - gosh, where did the summer go??

D has been feeling very emotional lately - lots of hugs and kisses at random times. I can’t believe she will be leaving - almost broke down last night. Oh, this is going to be one long and hard week…

Question on space bags - I saw someone mention them a little while ago. I picked up the pack of space bags from Costco since it seemed like a good deal. What’s the word on how the things look when you take them out of the bag? Are they badly wrinkled? I am debating about putting the sheets, comforter, pillow etc in a bag to make it easy to carry in the car. Will probably not do clothes in them - D would be very very unhappy if they were wrinkled.

@ ProudMomofS -

I hope it’s okay… I took the liberty of reposting your list in a thread in the Parent Cafe’, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1194033-critical-topics-discuss-my-freshman-son.html</a> . I gave you credit. It appeared to be a new poster and I thought you had some great ideas. I also posted a link to our forum here and invited him to join us saying there had been a lot of ideas and discussion recently since we are all going through the same thing.

Been on vacation and have so much catching up to do! Thinking of all you out there who are getting ready or have just taken your precious cargo to college! We have less than a week and I am in a state of disbelief! D is making lists and checking things off, but is kind of freaking out about the reality setting in.

Posted this on another thread, but thought you all might be able to help too: We are looking for women’s shorts with pockets. D is on the tennis team and likes to practice in shorts, unfortunately, the current styles of shorts have no pockets (or just a small key pocket). She needs side pockets for the tennis balls - usually 1 or 2 at a time. I have been all over the internet and multiple mortar and brick stores looking for these. Any suggestions? She doesn’t want baggy or really long shorts. Thanks!!!

Ohiostarfish: Try Target. I am currently wearing a pair of Cherokee (Target house brand) bermudas with side pockets. I wear them for golf. I checked Target online and they have many options for shorts with pockets.

My nieghbor left this morning for Alabama- 2 cars filled up- I told her to take notes for me and let me know everything that she didn’t need- I can’t imagine having enough room for all of that stuff in the dorm room. We have 2 more weeks and are even closer so i am not worrying at all about it

^ Ahhh, I talked to a girlfriend the other day who has a SAV (Suburban Assault Vehicle) and is taking a SECOND car. I laughed and said I was afraid if everything didn’t fit in the SAV it wasn’t going to fit in the dorm!!

@BlueIguana…why I’m flattered you thought it was worthy of sharing. I posted it on here simply as an outlet to say it again since I was determined not to repeat myelf with Son, hehe…

Feel free!

aris - regarding space bags. I have only used them for seasonal/long term storage but my experience has been to expect lots of wrinkles. I have tried to pack the bag so stuff compresses neatly but the bag compresses from all sides. So don’t iron anything not already ironed!

Ohio - I thought I saw tennis shorts at our local Reebok outlet a month or so ago, who knows if they still have them or if there is one local to you.

Ohiostarfish: Have you had any luck searching for women’s tennis shorts? We’ve had good luck at Holabird and Midwest Tennis (Midwest Sports).

Thanks mamom. I’ll put this on the back burner for now then. We’ll see if we can fit everything in the van without using the space bags. If we run out of room, we will use the space bags!

D called and wanted to go spend some time with her BFF, swimming in their pool. Can’t say no - the girls only have one week left together. But all the stuff I was asking her to do - guess they stay “undone” for another day!! She also has all her friends coming over tomorrow for a goodbye party - got to shop for that party tonight and start cooking! Ugh…might just end up going to Costco and picking up some easy appetizers/desserts/drinks and call it done!
