Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Hopefully, they were clean garbage bags!!!  ;)

Suzy, typical guy! The good thing about garbage bags is he can fold them up and store easily for move out day! Smart thinking
;)

It is great to pack using garbage bags, they don’t take up as much room in the car and could be thrown out when you are finished with it. Give your son some credit.

We picked up D2 ID, and went to her work place to sign some paperwork. The job turns out to be a lot more interesting than D2 thought. It’s going to give her a lot of opportunity to interact with professors and the community. The woman who is running the office was like D1’s second mom when D1 was here. She assured me that she will look after D2. The head of the program was a philosophy major in college, totally speaks D2’s language. D2 had to fill out direct deposit slip, and I was thinking its going to be her first official paycheck.

lilmom, great report. Like your D, mine also was cautious about registering for a heavy schedule. She got a lot of input from high school teachers and college orientation leaders to the effect that college is much harder than high school; don’t be too ambitious.

However, D’s high school course load consisted of all AP classes in her junior and senior year - except for one senior year class that was dual-enrolled calculus II and III (post AP calculus) at a local university that’s one of the top nationally ranked engineering schools, and notorious for tough grading. In short, the message “college is going to shock you by being more challenging than you’re used to” probably didn’t apply so much to her.

The upshot: after three days of classes this week, D phoned me to announce that she’d added an additional class to her schedule. It’s an English lit course that covers off a breadth requirement she needs for her degree program. I was happy she’d figured out for herself that her course load was on the light side. I expect your D too will have the opportunity to adjust her schedule during the first week or too of classes.

Reminds me of a favorite lyric from the Gin Blossoms: “If you don’t expect too much from me, you might not be let down.”

We’ve had no nest fouling to speak of, but I may have observed the first sign of “launch anxiety” recently. At NU, incoming freshmen make a top ten list of preferences for freshman seminar and are assigned accordingly; S got his first choice. A few days ago, he (and the rest of the class) got an e-mail from the professor stating that the class had been mis-listed at 11 and was actually being taught at 10 and to let him know if that created a potential schedule conflict.

(I’m guessing) he’d never seen the seminar listed at 11 and that as soon as he saw “mis-listed,” he scanned ahead to see “10” and "11’ and processed “mis-listed at 10/actually at 11” (backwards). At 11, there’s a special section of developmental psychology for freshman with AP credit for intro psychology and he’d planned the rest of his schedule around that.

So, he tells me he has a conflict and asks me what to do. Dopey me, I give him credit for reading the e-mail carefully and advise him to report the conflict to the professor, which he does, whereupon he gets e-mail from freshman dean, cc’ed to the professor. Meanwhile, I scan the schedule for open sections of freshman seminar and possible replacements for developmental. In the process, I notice that the professor has another class at 11 and start to get suspicious. I ask S for documentation and notice he’s misread the e-mail. I advise him to e-mail both individuals apologizing for the confusion, letting them know what happened, and that he’s fine where he is.

What a way to introduce yourself to your freshman advisor (and assistant department chair) and your class dean. :)

Steve C - first lesson learned - and not a bad one at all
:)

It is almost our turn to move in and it looks like it is going pour.

“My girl and I are of the belief that pretty much anything that happens in life can be related back to an episode of Friends.”

I have no one to share with but the “old” me always relates everything back to Seinfeld.

SteveC - Do they make you enroll in classes this early at NU? I thought launch is in 35 days?

stevec, my D had a similar experience with scheduling. She is in an honors program so some regular GE classes will be substituted with honors level classes except for the first year seminar class that every freshman must take. I helped her decipher the info online and advised her to drop it instead of keep it on her schedule. She felt silly having to backtrack and ask the dept head for help in getting back into the class since it was now full. He emailed saying he did it and not to worry because many freshmen have trouble
with their schedules. She said, “sheesh, mom, it wasn’t me.”:stuck_out_tongue:

Weatherga, D’s high school was a big impersonal one with a terrible math department. It was amazing that D did as well as she did in her AP math classes. Unfortunately, I feel her high school math experience didn’t encourage her to pursue STEM majors. I do hope she picks up a math class. A good teacher and experience might help her regain her confidence in math and science.

Checking in briefly while we have free WiFi.

DS moved in Wednesday - all went smoothly. He was one of only 6 freshman to be moving in early in his dorm, but upperclassmen were very helpful in showing how to arrange/loft beds, etc. Got his ID and other stuff done. That afternoon we literally ran in to friends of ours who were on campus with their rising senior daughter for a visit! DS got to “show them around” and show them his room. That might be some kind of record - visitors after moving in 30 minutes earlier!
We left campus to visit with more relatives, but will go back tonight for Frosh parent stuff that starts tomorrow. He’s been busy with marching band auditions. He is going through with the auditions - we’ll see what happens. There are only about 3 or 4 spots in his section and about 25 kids auditioning. Won’t know till Monday. He did have a message waiting for him - someone else in the music dept. heard his piano CD that he sent with his application - and has asked him to come to an audition next Wednesday, so that’s promising.
We’re all holding up fine b/c we know we’ll see him a few more times this weekend. I think the long ride home is going to be toughest on little sis!

Great move-in story, hsmom2dncrs!! Hurrah for nice upperclassmen and having visitors right away-- I think that probably leads to some extra pride/feeling of competence which is invaluable during a time when you can feel vulnerable a lot of the time (moving into your college!).

texaspg – Your fall freshman seminar professor becomes your advisor for the duration of freshman year, so they assign seminars a little early to create some space for contact, if necessary. The special section of developmental I mentioned is “permission only.” He made his request early enough, but he’s still waiting on his “ticket.” He’ll enroll for the rest at Wildcat Welcome the week before classes.

Time to call today’s Launches!

Congrats!!

S FINALLY went shopping with me! We got his fan, floor/desk lamp, surge protector, light bulbs, toiletries, first aid kit, duct tape, command hooks, foam mattress topper, etc. We finally have something that resembles a dorm mountain. More of a molehill, but it’s something.

S has tried to contact his roommate several times by phone (landline, no answer and no machine) and by email, no response. I guess he’ll just meet him next week. We won’t buy a fridge until we know what’s what but he’s bringing the rug from his room.

DILEMA
S got braces off Monday. He had a follow up appt. today to get his retainer and for them to do retention records. Ortho broke her ankle (which we knew about monday as she was hobbling around the office on crutches). She was not at the office today nor was anyone else. Sign on door apologized for the inconvenience-she was having surgery on her ankle and to call to reschedule with the person taking her place while she is out. No one was in the office or answering the phones all day. Seriously-the doctor is out and you shut the office down? Not to mention, we never got a call saying she would be out.

Today is Friday, S launches Sunday! How in the heck are we supposed to get the retainer. I am not so concerned about the records right now. I am sure they want him there to make sure the retainer fits right. Luckily he is only 30 minutes away-I can go get him after I get off work @ 3:30 and get him back to their office close to 5. I am not even sure they stay that late. But I am thinking they should to help out the people they put out.

Plus next week is Welcome Week. There are things he doesn’t want to miss Monday, late classes Wednesday. It will have to be Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday.

I am half tempted to call the emergency number and see if I get and answer. Her anesthetic should have worn off by now. Maybe she has someone who could meet us at the office tomorrow-that would be IDEAL!

Thoughts?? Should I call the emergency number and see what happens or wait for them to finally call us back to reschedule when he will already be gone?

So aggravated!!! (And yes, I feel bad she got injured but we have a seriously huge moment coming up in our life in 2 days and need to get this taken care of).

NervousNellie --

I’m with you – the office should have called to cancel your appointment, since they obviously knew they weren’t going to be there.

I wouldn’t call the emergency number. I’d wait and call the office on Monday.

I bet that there’s not a huge risk if he doesn’t get the retainer next week as long as it’s really soon.

MidniteMom, my son is doing Harvest. I would be happy to post about move-in, but I’m not taking my laptop with me so it might be Sunday night (26) before I can post. I can tell you that I’ve been through move-in at Yale once before. They have a lovely matriculation ceremony on Saturday morning where the kids enter by residential college and I think the President speaks. The reception at the President’s House is really just a long line and I’m planning to skip that this time. There is a thread on the Yale forum for parents and maybe people will be posting there. We have several Yale parents on this thread so I hope some will post so you feel in-the-loop.

Been lurking religiously for past year or so but finally wanting to add my voice! D was moved into dorm (a living/learning community residence) 2 days ago at Appalachian State University. Didn’t think she’d EVER actually get packed and clean her room sufficiently to vacuum before we had to leave! For all those who have procrastinators as well, it will get done, and whatever doesn’t get packed, the world will still continue to spin! Our move in story is not very drastic but my D & I had a good laugh the night before we actually moved her in. We drove up the night before and she discovered that there would in fact be students helping to move her belongings from the car to the room and we didn’t think that was going to happen as their community group moved in 2 days before all other freshman. We didn’t mark ANY of her belongings so we went to the store to buy masking tape and sharpies, then back to the 2 cars full of bins to slap the tape on.

Well, I found 2 garbage type bags in my car; one with clothes and the other filled with binders and papers (from high school) so when I asked her about them , she said “Mom, those are TRASH!” My husband packed up the cars while I was at work so trash got packed, and my box of supplies (lysol wipes, paper towels, hand soap) DIDN"T!!!

D also realized at the end of the day that she had left 2 small containers in her bathroom with contacts and glasses, and hair paraphenalia. Oh well. I’m sending the glasses and contacts tomorrow–we’ll see about the hair stuff!

We did have to do the ubiquitous WalMart run which I was really hoping to avoid but it was just a few little things (like HAND SOAP!!!) We rearranged the bed & desk after getting roommate’s permission (she’s a foreign exchange so VERY little belongings), I made up her bed (had a tussle with the 2 foam mattress toppers) and put away the cleaning supplies in the shared bathroom, but she really wanted to put away the clothes and desk stuff which I thought was the best idea. Stayed later than intended but that’s another story having nothing to do with separation issues!!

No obnoxious parents lurking about so can’t share any “Don’t do this” stories. Overall,
a good move that went pretty smoothly.

Best of luck to those still preparing to do the big move!

Congrats on a smooth move and welcome to posting, deck61. Wow, another new school for our list: Appalachian State. Keep us posted on how your daughter likes it. I am interested because a colleague at work has a son who’s just starting senior year of high school, and Appalachian State is his first choice college right now.

I love all the new folks! Keep coming out of the woodwork, lurkers!

So in 13 hours we will be on the road. We are going out for one last “all-you-can-eat” sushi fest. He has spent a lot of time with his gf and his friends that are staying home, so we are happy to have him (even with an entourage) for a few more hours.
