Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - New beginnings

Happy launch day, college_query, momsings, stressed56, allboyz

We are feeling ready around here (S launched Sunday but his stuff, his brother, and H and I all launch tomorrow morning for the 10 hour drive).

Oldfort - flings those doors open and clean with pride!

eyemamom - I forget, what time did your S say he was stopping by S’s room to give it the oldfort treatment? ;)

Ahhhh hahahahaha - I don’t what’s funnier, the notion he would clean or that you call it the “oldfort” treatment.

We have yet to begin to pack. Time is ticking, we leave tomorrow. I’m assuming it’s occuring to S that the time is here. He can barely manage to pack correctly for a few days away from home. I realize I will be hovering over this.

I also have a job and I have to get everything set to be gone for 3 days. Not as simple as I would hope.

Asked H how clean D’s room looked last week: yeah, it was clean. Good enough for me, so she doesn’t get the “oldfort” treatment. Disclaimer: I am not a cleaner and neither is H.

The joke at my office is that if I notice something doesn’t look clean, it must be bad.

Morning all wackaloons!

Yesterday was shipping day and all 5 boxes got to the ups pickup on time. Packing them up was stressful on a time crunch because I made the big mistake of preloading the bigger ones in June but not recording what was in each one! I am hoping that I remembered everything.
Last week I could not remember if I had gotten 2 sets of twin xl sheets so I ordered one more on amazon. It arrived yesterday, after the boxes were gone, so I washed them and they will go with us in a suitcase (on the plane).

Now we have to do the clothes. I was thinking a two week supply? The bulky jackets and extra sneakers (they are huge) got shipped in a box. DS will bring his laptop in his backpack and a carry on bag with wheels (good for flying home for fall break and thanksgiving) and we will check 3 suitcases (1 each). I figure that we leave him with one suitcase (for winter vacation ) which we can hopefully store under the bed?

When we get to Atlanta we will shop for a tv, printer, cables, desk lamp and…

Okay guys, what crucial thing am I forgetting? All bedding was shipped along with trash can, over the counter meds, paper goods, basic school supplies, laundry bag, towels (we just gave him old towels from the house…he doesn’t care), hangers, hanging shelf unit for closet, Clorox wipes, shower caddy with all supplies in it. He says he isn’t interested in any room decor like posters or pictures (he has pictures of us on his phone).
What else are we forgetting?

OldFort- Haha… Great story.

Sadly neither me nor my husband has two days off over S’s launch date, so we will have to pretty much drive him 3 hours up to Philly, drop him off, then come back home to DC to pick up S2 who is at camp (he is a third grader). Not much time for plesentries or the like, but I feel confident that S is ready!

seiclan - S would say you’re forgetting the chess board. ;)

Seiclan, you sound awfully organized and if you’ve forgotten anything, it can be picked up there. Maybe a basket of his favorite snacks? I baked S his favorite brownies and one of his roommates’ moms had baked cookies for move in. For D, it was Greek yogurt and granola, and nutella.

We are finally back from the week-long move in. We didn’t forget anything but D sure came up with things to buy every day we were there. The last purchase was a one piece sport bathing suit which was on clearance (yay). I didn’t want her swimming laps in the gym pool in a bikini.

Joking aside, this will be the first time I will be facing her empty but messy room. It will be a busy week putting this house back in order but I am thankful to be home.

Good luck with today’s launches!

Sbjdorlo - D has a 3.2 cubic foot fridge. Most schools have limits on the size they allow.

The nerves have begun!

I’ve been telling S FOREVER that despite what he thinks, it gets hot in Rochester and he’s going to want shorts and t-shirts at all. The dorms don’t have a/c.

So he’s been complaining, refused to buy shorts because he just likes jeans, doesn’t want t shirts, etc.

Just about 30 minutes ago we were chatting and I said, you may want to rethink the shorts thing, it’s supposed to be 90 this weekend and without a/c it will be HOT in those dorms. What do you mean no a/c?! It boggled my mind - remember when I begged you to buy shorts, because it would be hot in the dorm? Remember when we talked about needing a fan, because it would be hot in the dorm?

Now he’s all O.M.G… when you took me shopping why didn’t you make me buy more t’s and shorts?! Because you were being so stubborn and I told you how hot it would be there and you kept blowing me off.

He’s got 2 pairs of shorts. That’s it. Now he’s bummed.

It’s starting to sink in that he’s leaving tomorrow.

Lol eyemamom, my son was the same way two years ago. He insisted that he was a jeans guy and brought maybe one or two pairs of shorts to school. Recently, I noticed shorts are all he’s been wearing, more specifically, cut off pants…hope your launch goes smoothly!

eyemamom - finally you seem to have something to complain about!

eyemamom…amazon prime to the rescue? Can you order a pair or two of shorts on line for 2-day delivery? As well as an extra treat or two? This will ensure he learns his way to the mail room.

We are finally back home from our 10 day launch/family visiting. It is SO good to be home!

Classes start today for DS - he tried to get a class change yesterday, but the wait for the advisor was so long, he decided to just start classes and change later in the week. He did go through with the marching band audition, but let us know last night that he did not make it. I guess I’m a little relieved- with over 30 kids hoping to fill a handful of spots in his section, it wouldn’t have been right if he had bumped somebody who really wanted it. Actually, I think “attitude” played a big part - he may have “mentioned” to the section leader that he was more interested in the concert band and orchestra. He did admit he made some friends he will probably hang out with - so at least he gave it a shot. Won’t hear about the other ensembles until later in the week.
Our DD was the weepy one, and I expect she’ll have a few more moments the first week or so, but her activities will be be going full tilt soon and she’ll be fine.
Good luck to all those still packing and waiting to launch. I have to say - it’s good to be on the other side!

Hi wackaloons! This is it! Move in day!!!

We leave tonight… last night my daughter’s room looked like a hurricane hit. I told her that we couldn’t leave for the airport until she was packed and I could walk through her room without killing myself. I woke up this morning pleasantly surprised with 4 packed suitcases, 3 garbage bags of trash and two large bags of clothes for donations. I guess she really is going! Weep, weep.

Congratulations to everyone who has launched! Our D2012 will launch tomorrow. She is headed to the University of Maryland at College Park in their Honors College.

We’re dealing with last-minute packing details now and the need to set up a banking account for her to withdraw cash at the student union.

momsings - WOOHOO!

eyemamom - if it makes you feel any better, my oldest son, the rising junior at UR, isn’t a shorts guy either. He just spent all summer on campus and wore jeans all summer. Doesn’t sound comfy to me, but he was fine with it. Well, he wished it weren’t an unusually warm summer, but he never wore the one pair of shorts he took.

DS has moved into his new fraternity house, but still hasn’t had much room to unpack. he can’t find a towel (though we assume it is packed) so is going to Walmart to get a new one. We also have to bring down more dress clothes. He is going to be working in an office, so he will need ties even.

Congrats to MizzBee & son on the fraternity, the new digs, and the job!

eyemamom, your story about your S and shorts made me realize that maybe my Southern California born and bred S needs at least a couple more pairs! He usually wears shorts for most of the year, but right now only has two decent pairs that he wears on alternate days. He plans to still wear shorts most of the time when he goes to Stanford, although I’m sure he’ll want some pants in the winter, such as it is. I think he only has a couple of pairs (he never wears jeans) and they’re probably too short. More things to add to the shopping list!
