Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Received my 3 daughters PSAT scores yesterday (2 sophomores, 1 Junior). Now just waiting for the State index Scores.

Here’s a link to last year’s semi-finalist qualifying scores (it’s on p.52 of the thread if I messed up the link.) Many states went up several points last year in qualifying scores, this year’s numbers can vary up or down from there, but it gives a rough idea.

I am resisting the urge to e-mail our GC to see when they will be releasing the scores. Hoping to see them before the break.

S gets his PSAT score Jan 5th
not sure how much it will matter since his SAT scores will be available on Dec 22nd.

I can’t help but read all of these threads of Srs who applied EA/RD/SCEA/Any and all combinations of early admissions and think, “Wow
that is going to be my kid next year.”

It is very surreal

Hi to all the new posters! akash, the 2010 HS thread had several students join our group. It’s really helpful to think about the process from their end.

The new principal is going to release PSAT scores to junior before the break instead of waiting until mid-January as is the custom. Sooo happy. At least I hope we’ll be. ;)

hey but ill be graduating in 2013, so all the HS 2010 posters will be 3 years seniors to me. not that it matters but
oh well give me the link:)

I wasn’t suggesting that you join that group. I was using it as an example of how students and parents coexisted nicely on a “parents” thread. In other words, I’m encouraging you to keep posting here! :D

i get your point. but cant find many students here, if at all anyone but me.

My children do not participate on CC. I think that is better to keep their stress level down. I share information I learn here with them. You’re welcome to hang out here with us.

Mamabear I am also resisting the urge to call/email the GC!

So like nellieh
I felt like breathing into a paper bag when I read that muse3 has 3 sets of PSAT scores to digest. With three so close it must be like having your own counseling center at home!

I am sure we won’t get the Scores until January. Last year I had forgotten about them. It turned out they were supposed to be sent with the second semester grade reports (late January) and around March I asked D if she had ever received them
they had forgotten to give t hem to her or send them. It happened to a lot of the kids. It was a real blessing because the scores were “eh?” but since she couldn’t really compare t hem to others’ she didn’t stress and I had a little time to remember that average/slightly above average scores can be a good thing
brings down expectations about “top schools” that would be a crap shoot even if she had much higher scores and gets her focusing on what SHE wants out of a school rather focusing on how to tweak her resume to improve her chances to get into a top 20 school. I saw a number of my son’s friends flushed with their high PSAT scores forget to focus on what they want from college and start focusing on the arms race of prestige. I was a little that way myself with S’s high PSAT and SAT scores
you know,“oooh
he falls into the top 25% at William and Mary so that is a match” kind of mindset even though WM’s art program was of no interest to him. Luckily he wanted to go into art programs that, frankly, value scores and grades very little. He was more focused on getting into the best art program for him rather than the most prestigious academic school and it was a healthy reminder to stay focused on finding fit, not getting into the “best” brand school.

Still no PSAT scores here. But my son went to his first school visit from a college rep, Lafayette. I think Lafayette was the first brochure I ever showed him and it seems to have stuck. The only colleges he can think of when people ask him where he’s looking are Lafayette, Northwestern, Kenyon, and Columbia University (even though he’s really thinking about Colorado College). The visit was interesting enough that he will sign up for others that come to his school. They’ve had a nice selection of schools viit since September. I hope another round comes through in the spring.

No PSAT scores yet here either! grrr. I’m thinking they will arrive sometime this week. Fineartsmajormom thanks for the reminder that the best fit might or might not be a “top” college.

It really is. Completely.

Today was the first day in a few that D was more like her normal self- calmer and more even tempered. She was absolutely freaking yesterday because she has a field trip on Thursday and had FIVE tests/quizzes scheduled that same day. I talked her down from the ledge and told her to approach her teachers and see what could be worked out and sure enough, the worked with her so that it was bearable.

My big challenge (among many I’m sure) will be to keep my composure when she is losing hers. I find that rather difficult sometimes.

I am glad to have this group!

I’ve heard good things about those schools! The boy I used to babysit for EONS ago went to Colorado College for his undergrad and loved it. He then went on to Law School in the DC area, completed his law degree and now works in New York. :-)

Is Kenyon close to Denison? We may need to take a look at Kenyon when we hit the Ohio schools. Isn’t Lafayette in PA or am I thinking of another school?

You mean 9 points right?

Vandygrad, my son doesn’t really know anything about those schools lol. He went to a writing workshop at Kenyon last summer and liked the campus. He likes the block plan at Colorado, even though he keeps calling it Columbia. I don’t know where he got Northwestern from. Lafayette is in PA. Kenyon and Denison are both near Columbus but I don’t know where they are relative to each other.

just curious if anyone can explain
recently my daughter’s college board account listed both 2010 and 2011 psat results (2011 with access code only), but suddenly today there is only 2010 available
the 2011 has disappeared. i’ve emailed college board but no answer as yet
thanks

Nope, 90 points. From her sophomore PSAT to her Junior PSAT.

90 out of 240 PSAT total is impressive. I’m only hoping for 20 points out of 240 for D2, that would make her qualify for NMSF.

Denison is in Granville, east of Columbus, and Kenyon is in Gambier, about 30 miles north of Denison.
