Parents of the HS Class of 2013

@mamabear1234 thanks. but i cant help not participating in CC forum. im an international and my paernts have been nowhere near the US for their education or jobs. so its all upto me to figure it out. anyway i dont wanna burden them with such trivial things either. they would expect me to know a lot before applying anywhere. like they would expect from anyone intelligent and responsible. so, yes im stuck with CC for quite a while for some more info. thanks anyway.

Keeping my cool when dd loses hers is ALWAYS a challenge for me!

I had a big breakthrough today. DD and I were talking about majors and usually she pooh poohs anything I have to stay (what can I possible know about anything, right??) Today we really had an amazing discussion on possible majors and career opportunities (based on her interests) and why I thought varied options would be a good fit for her or not (ie…this job required alot of writing skill and you’re a good writer, and so on)

Not sure why it occurred. But it was a wonderful conversation.

Julia

Agh! No, you guys are totally right. It was 9 points, not 90! I was automatically converting it to the SAT score in my head. Yes, it was NINE points on the PSAT scale. I’m an idiot!!

Well, it’s still a good increase! At least you have your scores…I am still waiting…

I found this site a week ago and can’t stay off! I obtained my S PSAT scores by calling NMSC. I asked for assistance in accessing the 2011 PSAT scores that were on his organizer (I told them I did not have the access code). They asked me a few questions and now I have full access to his PSATR scores. BTW I have no idea when the school will release his scores. Hope this helps!

I am having trouble waiting too. I thought if I didn’t post this, it would make them come faster. It’s not working. I broke down and e-mailed DS guidance counslor yesterday, still waiting for an answer. I told her I was going to a seminar next wk on College Admissions and Disability and the score would be useful. I hope that is reason enough to give me the on-line code. Hoping for a 16 pt jump for National Merit - Maryland is a hard state.

How many Maryland parents are on this thread, I wonder? I am one, you are one, MDMom, I assume, is one. Any others?

This made me laugh. I totally recognize the baffled tone in your words! ;-)

My daughter just received her PSAT score yesterday. It is a 30 pt jump from 201 to 231 with some preparation.

Congrats, Indycat! I’d be happy with half that increase.

Welcome, yofaith and congrats on getting the scores!

I broke down and e-mailed the GC. End of next week (Dec 16) they will be sent home with the students. From checking out the results thread on the SAT forum, it looks like a really harsh writing curve (-2 is a 71?) which is scary.

Sorry Vandy…but I am from So Cal. I guess my name is a bit misleading ;)

Congrats Indycat on your D’s point jump!

^MDMom I always assumed MDmom meant you were a doctor.

Mamabear- I know! and -1 in writing is 75 I think, much harsher than the practice tests my S did.

Student here, I can confirm -1 W is a 75

Hi everyone, I’m new here. Just found this group and see anyone got PSAT score. We are still waiting for it. My son took SAT in Jan 2011 during his Gr. 10 and got 2100. So eager to see his PSAT this time. What summer activities do you plan for your children next year?

First math, now writing. It must be tough to design a general ā€œaptitudeā€ (or whatever they want to call it) test good across multiple ability levels. First, you are limited by time constraints as to how many questions you can ask. Then, if you make the questions too hard it won’t work for the lower performing demographic. If you try to balance that, then nobody can miss anything up at the top. Make a single simple careless error and you lose 50 points (or 5 points on the PSAT). Even so, the smarter/more careful kids get and/or the more they prep, you still have bunching up at the top. Maybe they need an SAT Reasoning Level 1 test and an SAT Reasoning Level 2 test. Yes, I’m kidding.

TX5: Good guess, but I am not an doctor.

Welcome Pigmom! Looks like your S is already off on the right foot with a 2100 on the SAT!! As for as summer activities go, sad to say that our family vacation time will be replaced this year with College visits. Both kids (S='13 and D='14) will go to ā€œcampsā€ at their first college choice in each of their sports. Come mid-Aug we will be hitting up the East Coast for visits.

Anyone else planning on doing visits over summer?

Summer visit planning…long trips out west from the midwest…

University of Wyoming. Financial safety for us. I like Laramie and the university. Hope S does.

One of these 2…can only afford one other visit…
University of Montana
University of Idaho

Have not been able to decide which one to visit. Both look great. Suggestions?

S will probably choose between these western schools and a couple of midwest schools.

Depends on whether ds gets picked for a DC program. If he does, I’ll fly out with him and look at schools there.
