Parents of the HS Class of 2013

D’13 got her PSAT scores today, she got a 195 not as stellar as some on CC but I am happy. She gained 28 points form her Fresh Score, last yr, and if she was staying with the 2014 class her GC said she would expect about the same for next yr…as I said this is more about SAT score predictor than anything. Her GC said she expects 2200 + Sat when DD takes it in May, we will see.

The pressure is definitely on DD had an AP World unit exam today, that her teacher told them about Tuesday…it counted for 25% of her qtr grade! D stayed late to find out how she did, she was worried, but she got a 91! We are a both very happy and that takes a lot of pressure off for the Semester Exam on Tuesday! So the only thing left to worry about is her English Project, boy I can’t wait for next week to be over.

Bernese: The testing tutor my S works with here in CA uses material from ExcelEdge. Will so well it worked once we get scores ;)

Longsx3: Congrats on the 91!! I still can’t get over teachers giving such big projects/exams right before Christmas break.

Ds reports that BC Cal final part 1 wasn’t as hard as he thought it would be. Figuring that he got a B. Today, because it’s a half-day, I took him to lunch, as per our custom, and asked him what was his favorite class this semester, and surprisingly, he said BC Cal, even though those are his worst grades. I like that he’s not a grade grubber. :)

I asked whether he’s heard a lot of college talk among the seniors, and he said no.

Today is last day of school before winter break. Guess we’ll see at the end of the day whether PSAT scores come home this year or next. Either way, S13 will get SAT scores December 22. He doesn’t seem to care one way or the other. I would prefer to see it in order, but that’s just how I am built.

Lots of seniors are starting to hear back from colleges. Either ED/EA or RD from some (but not all) of the state schools (UCF and FSU, but not the others yet - I wonder why).

It’s all starting to feel more real now.

Last day of school here as well. S’13 is taking physics final and then has a show choir performance. D’10 arrives home from college tomorrow, so the fun will begin. We have a long list of movies that we want to see!

S’13 still hasn’t received PSAT scores either, which is unusual. In previous years, they were sent home the week before winter break. Perhaps they are going to mail them? Curious to see the scores, although S won’t be anywhere near NMSF cut-off. His school had only one semi-finalist the year D graduated (2010) and had 2 this year. At least it’s an upward trend!

Ds got a 100 on his BC Cal final, so he’s ecstatic. Physics and more math today.

Last day of school is middle of next week, and principal assured juniors she’s sending home their scores before the break. No longer thinking he’ll make NMSF, but I want to know for testing prep as he takes the January SAT.

Last day of school before the break for S3. Poor guy has to go back Monday January 2nd. Evidently the school board didn’t know it was a national holiday (with bowl games!!). By the time parents started complaining they said it was too late to change.

Congratulations to every one who has improved their PSAT scores and great mid terms scores!!

Welcome all the new memebers

I envey the people who are starting their vacation today. We have one more week to go, and we get a week off now and a week off on feb. I wish we had two weeks now instead of feb vacation. Weather is really wierded.

S is now in full swing of learning and doing well. Yesterday. he came in from school with a big smile- there were good EA acceptance at his school and the people at his after school club was talking about it. I can’t imagine we will be in that place next year…Too stressed out I am. Thankfully, My S seems to take it easily and not bothered about all this and focusing on his work.

Welcome to all the new posters.
We are on a different schedule here - we just got second quarter progress reports this wk. Son is also staying up to late working on homework - he got his first detention this wk - he fell asleep in the library at lunch and was 15 minutes late to Latin. Detention here is in the morning, so we had to drive him to school at 6:30am - that didn’t do much to help his sleep.
Still no PSAT scores for DS-1, but DS-2’s (Freshman) came in the mail yesterday. They were much worse then his 8th grade SAT scores for talent search, so I have no idea what to expect with older son. Writing curve was brutal. Hopefuly todays mail will have answers.
We are thinking about using a private college counselor that specializes in kids with disablilities - if we do this it will probably mean scratching any summer program (replacing with CC courses). I feel like I can do a lot of research, but I have this fear that I will miss something or that a program that looks good on paper or during a visit will not be. Then again, they are very expensive. Any opinions?

Thanks Sendemsoaring, what do you recommend for my S to do this summer. I read the threads on CC for summer programs that are mostly very expensive. My S went to Columbia last summer, but too expensive and no credit granted. My S wants to find an internship opportunity. We are Canadian. There are not many things we can find like that in the US. I looked TASP, but most courses are for social study or Art major.

The problem is that my S doesn’t know what he’s going to do in his future. Last year he said “business and management”, now probably engineering.

Today is the last day of school. He has planed his time for Physics IB because he is the only student who take IB HL on Physics. He has to learn the extra work himself.

<heavy sigh=""> No PSAT scores. Guess we just get to wait until next year. Bugs me, but S13 is unaffected. He’s just happy it’s winter break. Of course, he then has semester end exams the second week back. I notice somebody say that their child starts back on the first Monday of Jan, an official federal holiday. Same here. What were they thinking?</heavy>

PSAT scores are going out in waves. Ds will get his Monday or Tuesday. The scores we’ve heard so far are really good – but, of course, only those with really good scores are going to talk about them, right? ;)

My daughter received her PSAT scores last week. The scores are good but no NMSF good, in the ballparks with her sister’s scores, which was NMSF 5 years ago. The really good news is that her CR shot up almost 20+ but her math went down(I think she can work to bring this up if she reads the math question carefully). Her W is still her downfall.
I didn’t nag her to practice a lot before the PSAT because I knew grades are still most important factor in college admissions. She did have A+ on both Math and Physics(big sign of relief) on her recent report card so I’m very pleased.

My youngest goes back on that Monday also. Horrible Christmas break this year. He goes to school THROUGH the 23rd and goes back the second. My two older kids get out on Wednesday the 21st on a half day and don’t go back until the 3rd. We’re pulling the youngest on the 22nd to have a family fun day though. We are going to drive to Gaylord National to see ICE! I’ve not taken the family before b/c it is so expensive but I got half price tickets through Groupon (or something like it). I think the whole family will enjoy it.

YDS- Ain’t that the truth! I’m glad D got her scores first and I came on here and blabbed because honestly, by now I think I would have kept my mouth shut and just lurked for the next year. This can be a VERY intimidating place to be.

DrGoogle- It sounds like your daughter did very well. Is she happy with the result? Congratulations to her on the A pluses! Great work in hard subjects.

So today is a live-at-church kind of day. D has to be there early for a choir practice, then service, then dh and I have a meeting, then I have a lunch meeting. Tonight we go back for DS1 to sing a solo. This whole weekend has been packed and I am totally exhausted. Not sure I’ll even be able to stay awake for my beloved Ravens!

Thanks Vandygrad, D2 is happy with her PSAT scores, it reflects her practice scores at home( without timing). She is now focusing her effort in prepping for Jan SAT with timing, she believes she can get to her goal, which she refused to believe last year. However, she is not too happy that she can’t join her sister and I do Xmas shopping.

Ours is lousy too. Mandatory School event on 12/21 til 9:30 pm, then break begins til Tuesday 1/3. In that time, he has 6 major projects.

Really is ruining family time.

Add us to the list of lousy breaks! HS has school on the 23rd and goes back the 3rd of Jan. No spring break to speak of (2 days around Easter). College kids are home, even H has off work on the 23rd. I am hoping my D will agree to skip school Friday, or at least leave after her AP Chem lab. My standards have slipped over the last 15 years!

We’re in finals mode here. Both d13 and son15 have math and English finals tomorrow. We had a friends son come over and review precalc with dd. She only needs an 85 on the final to keep her A, but you never know. At this point she has no chance to advance into AP Calculus next year-you need a 98% in general both semesters to advance, and he current average is 95%. So all that matters is just getting an A for her GPA. Her other big final is Spanish. If she can get a 95 on the final she’ll bring her grade to a A-.

Ds couldn’t care less…motivating him to study is a nightmare.

We’re still waiting on PSAT scores…not sure when we can see them on college board without a code?

Julia

VBC, I just read my kids that rule about a 95 to take AP Cal, and they thought that was harsh. At our school, you only need an 85. Do they get 30 kids who make a 98? In other words, enough kids for a class to make? Our school offers two sections of BC Cal, but I can guarantee you that not all of those kids made a 98!

Turns out ds gets his PSAT scores Tuesday. He is feeling really confident about it. I wish I was so confident! He’s spent most of the day “studying” for his Latin final (you know how it is – study a little, watch football, study a little, eat, study a little, get on FB, study a little, help me back cookies), the only one he has left. The rest of his classes had projects or take-home essays. Oh, and tomorrow he reports back for the internship in the congressional office. It’s an election year so should be interesting to see how that’s shaping up for his candidate.
