Parents of the HS Class of 2013

Youdon’tsay, It’s actually a 98%!!! DD has a 95%. I think you only need a 94% if you are in Precalc Honors.

It’s probably a moot point for dd. I think she will just go for Calculus next year. She could take the placement exam and then appeal, but she really is more of a liberal arts kind of kid and I’m not sure she’ll think its worth the effort. I truly stay out of it…I never win when I get involved. I just do the kind of “reframing” techniques.

Julia

Sorry for the typo. Yes, I told them 98. I guess now that I know there are two levels of pre-cal it’s not as bad as ds’s school. You aren’t even allowed to take BC Cal if you’re in the lower level of pre-cal. You have to be in the higher level and make an 85. I guess the lower-level pre-cal kids take AB? I’m really not sure.

^^At D’s school, you can’t take BC until you have taken AB. I know… it’s dumb.:(

D3 is in AB Calc this year but not sure what to take next year for math. I always said I wanted her to take math through her senior year but it’s just not where her passion lies so I am rethinking that. And actually when I said that maybe she wouldn’t need to take a math next year she said “hmmm, then I could take AP Physics” which surprised me since she was never sure she wanted to take physics ever in the first place but is enjoying it this year and the teacher next year is supposed to be amazing. We’ll see!

All this Calculus talk has me wondering which one my s will take next year. In his school it seems like it’s only seniors taking calculus because juniors are taking precalculus. Then in senior year there is AB and BC calculus so I guess one has to be selected. I’m guessing it’s based on grades in precalculus and honors status but I don’t know.

Starting with our kiddos graduating class, TN requires students to take a math class all 4 years, even if they took a HS level class (or two or three) in MS. No interest in calc at all here at my house, and D1 didn’t take it either. Figuring it will be AP Statistics.

5 midterms down, 1 to go…

D13 and S15 had their first finals today: math and English. Tomorrow is Religion and History. Both said English was easy.

DD was not happy with precalc…said it was an incredibly hard test. her teacher told them to study the review packet and the old tests and they’d “do fine”. DD said there was stuff on the tests that was in the book, but never on a test, review packet or final study packet. Its also a weighted test, with individual questions being weighted, but you don’t know which questions. There were 22 “essay” questions and then 28 multiple choice. Once you turned in your essay question portion, you were given the multiple choice. There was one question on the essay section she had no idea about, but she didn’t want to waste time on something that might not be worth it, so she turned it in. She ended up with 10 minutes left at the end, but they aren’t allowed to go back to the other sheet. We’ll just have to hope for the best!

Ds finished the geometry final in under an hour, so he either did really good or really bad!!!

Julia

All the best to those of you whose kids are in the midst of finals this week. I hope they all do very well! Seems as though the majority have heard PSAT scores by now and this group did very well. It will be interesting to see where they all apply next year because clearly it will be to some very competitive schools.

Regarding math tracks- not sure what my D will do either. I don’t think she is a real math brain although she does pretty well overall in her math classes. Her two choices for next year would be AP Calc AB or BC (not sure how that is figured, I think sequentially so AB) or Honors Statistics. I find both of those choices pretty darn scary. Her current calc and physics teachers both recommend that she do Calc over Statistics. She’s also going to need to choose between AP Physics and AP Biology.

Stress dreams came back last night, after a short respite. I’d managed to stop thinking about SAT scores coming out on the 22nd, but then I remembered. :-/

Funny how the math thing works so differently from place to place. Here kids can start high school Algebra in 7th grade if they qualify (gifted math in elementary school, good grades in pre-algebra, teacher approval). That means several kids (including S’13) are taking Calc now as Juniors (most take BC if their grades have been good). But the state requires four years of math in high school and does not count what was taken in MS. So, S’13 will take AP Stats next year. Classmates of his will take a higher level Calc at the local community college. S’13 isn’t interested in more math than necessary - he’s more of a social science guy.

For the first time, S '13 has admited that SAT scores coming out Dec. 22 is on his mind. Not that he isn’t confident he did well, he is (which, of course, makes me nervous). It just appears he has been thinking about it, something he never discussed before.

Happy Holidays to everyone! We did receive D’s PSAT scores - just OK. We will be applying Top 50 but probably not Top 20…this is our second time around and if there is one thing that I have learned is that fit is everything. If the academics are fabulous but the kid doesn’t like the culture, it doesn’t matter because they are miserable. D11 likes where she is but many of her friends, some at Ivies are transferring out because of “fit”…the dirty little secret of this entire process is that the transition first semester can be harder (for everyone) than everything the kid did in HS to get there.

Got the score. Good, but not holding my breath. The writing section is clearly the area he needs to work on, so that’s good info.

Glad that the PSAT scores are trickling in for those of you who didn’t have them yet!

Still no scores here.

Sent from my SPH-D700 using CC App

Which forums on CC are good for asking for ideas of colleges to investigate? I have twin sons, who will be looking for very different schools, and we will be in the northeast over spring break to visit colleges. There are so many, I’d like to throw out some stats/info on my boys and get opinions on schools that sound like a good fit/match schools.

Mum to 3

You can ask here or start a thread in the parent section.

Many here are on the 2nd go around and have done this before.

If you start a new thread, I suggest that you request recommendations be grouped in regions. You don’t want to be driving all over. Easily, no matter what level the boys are, you could spend a week within 2 hours of Philadelphia looking at schools. Same for Boston.

The parent section is very helpful with logistics, too! My August California trip was much easier by the suggestion of hotels in certain towns and using certain airports.

My D scored a 212 on the PSAT and is in the 99th percentile, according to her score report. Does anyone know what is the lowest score to be in the 99th percentile? I know these percentiles are on a national basis.

Thanks!

txthomas,

Try this one!!

I had to pick son up from school yesterday becuase he caught a bad stomach flu that is goiing through the high school. He was really sick this morning - very early. And then I got an e-mail about one of my 1st graders having a bad day at school. The day was not looking to good.

Then on the way to meet the twins bus (1st graders) I checked the mail. PSAT scores -230 that should be good enough for Maryland. Bad day turned on a dime. DS one is even feeling better and watching Dr. Who.

Congrats on all the great scores!! We won’t get ours until January 11th, but get SAT scores tomorrow. I am getting a little nervous. I keep telling myself: “It is what it is”.

Tx5: I am with you on those SAT scores tomorrow…(sigh)

S13 texted me while I was at work yesterday thinking that I could log in for him to check his scores, I told him he had to wait until the 22nd.
He texted back with, “Why must they torture us!!”
I responded with, “If you think this is bad, just wait 'till next year…”
