Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Hi everyone…

I was online today and ran across two things that might be helpful…
googling for a common data set I found Collegelists and there is a page on the site called Reality Check. It has some SAT scores for Admitted/Attending students. You might find one of the schools on your list on this and shorten the search.

also googling for common data sets I came across a government site that has some search features/comparison features/tools and you can create excel sheets and save them to your laptop etc. the national center for educational statistics has a college navigator tool that was terrific. It included finance info.

I can’t post the info here as CC will likely block them. If you can’t find it–PM me your email with spaces and I will shoot you the info.

So I’ll be wanting to get my kids SAT scores bright and early when they first come out. Someone said tomorrow at 5:30. Is that right? And do I just sign in to College Board and the score will be right there in my daughter’s profile? Anyone?

They came in THIS morning, Anjin.

Just kidding:)

And after someone has answered the question above, then you can answer…
HOW AM I GOING TO FREAKING SLEEP TONIGHT!!! I think it is safe to say that most involved parents are more nervous about this whole process (at least right now) than the kids. Agreed?

Ha HA HA HA!!! VERY GOOD!!! I had that half-a-second-heart-stopping moment when I read it

I’m sorry Anjin – but I couldn’t resist. Is the first SAT for your kid? Mine is signed up the March test.

D just informed me that she and several friends are getting up at 2:30am (Pacific time) tonight for scores…no school tomorrow, so whatever…
I asked “What are you expecting?” Her response “If the score is less than the PSAT, I’ll be very upset, if it’s within a 100 over the PSAT = neutral, if it’s 100+ the PSAT, screams of delight.” Tonight will be interesting…

Yes, very interesting. I’m considering drinking heavily. Maybe sedation. But the problem with drinking heavily is you then wake up at 3:00 in the morning dehydrated. Hmmm… so then I’ll be staring at the clock for two hours.

@Agentninetynine: Yes, first time. She’s always done great on these type tests. I shouldn’t be nervous. She took the PSAT in 10th, again in 11th, took the SSAT in 8th, and all that other stuff in elementary school. But this is the biggy! But i’m telling you, I’ll be wired, bug-eyed, anxious to see the results and my daughter will be sleeping like a baby!

So you opted for March? What kind of prep is your kid doing?

Kees4me – does this mean that you’ll be awake at 2:30 a.m? Why no school – do you have ski week?

Anjin – She took the PSAT for the first time in October and received an okay score. She’s doing SAT prep with MIL who is a reading specialist and SAT CR prep tutor. And there’s a 4-Saturday course through school. I’m thinking she’s more of an ACT kid but we’ll see.

Agentninetynine, we will see in a matter of hours! Some kids are better at the ACT. The SAT can be tough. Is her goal to be in the range of the PSAT or higher? With the prep, you would think higher, right?

Good luck to those waiting for results!!

When the June ACT results came out, DS was in the mountains of New Mexico hiking. I was camping in a tent with my cell phone out at midnight waiting for the results! haha!! Couldn’t wait until he got off the trail to tell him how he had done!

DD’s issues are two fold: She needs to get accepted AND she needs to get some merit aid if she is to attend any of the selective LAC’s on her list. So she needs to improve her score.

Her PSAT barely landed her in the top quartile of accepted students to these selective schools. We have a good state flagship that has an honors college so she has that as an option as well.

What state are you in? and what LAC’s are you targeting. Yeah, state option as a backup, but you can’t really beat a top LAC. Smaller classes, more students who are similarly academically inclined, etc.

I’m pretty sure my DS has no idea that scores will be out tomorrow. I’ll check when I wake up (NOT 5:30 and tell him when he gets home from school). I don’t want him checking in the morning in case it’s not good news – it could throw him off for the whole school day.

We’re in Oregon, so the University of Oregon is her safety. Unfortunately, it’s located in the lush Willamette Valley, home to the highest pollen count in the country. Not the best place for my asthmatic kid.

Whitman & Occidental are her top two choices at the moment. We’re touring Gonzaga, Seattle U & UW over spring break. To get any merit aid, a student’s scores need to be as high as possible. We won’t qualify for need based.

funny you say that mathmom. I was texting my daughter (she is at a boarding school) and I think the same thing. I don’t think she knows the results are coming out tomorrow. So I’m with you… I’ll check the results, but if they are good, I’M WAKING HER THE HECK UP!!! :-)

Mathmom- Do the schools get the results before the kids? Is it possible his GC will tell him before you can?

Small world. My youngest brother is at Oregon. He’s in some kind of graduate or Ph.D program.

Thank you for all the engineering school suggestions! I’ll write them down and check them out!

Where are you Anjin? How does your daughter like boarding school?
