Parents of the HS Class of 2014

I just had lunch…Reading post #3940 made my stomach turned a little…But still thanks…

Ha Ha, very funny beardolls!! And just think of how fast those 150 days will go by!

Elk - do you know how to work the glitch on the act site? If you go to the act section they explain how to do it.

My d has a tutor for act, but hasn’t prepared for the SAT and she takes that this saturday. Watch her do better on that.

I wish the ACT would superscore each section! Interestingly she thought the science section was the hardest, and she got the highest score on that.

We’ll have her testing every month, alternating act and sat through the rest of the school year. If she can get her goal scores, we’ll stop having her take it. However if necessary she’ll try again in the fall. She could end up taking the ACT 4 times and the SAT 3. She has such bad test anxiety and has such trouble with them, my theory is to just wear her down and take off the pressure for the individual test she’s taking. We’ll see.

Because my son tested with accommodations, we couldn’t sign him up online, so I don’t have the ID we’d need to use the ACT site glitch. I wonder why they take so long between when the tests are obviously scored and when they send them out!

ELKyes and mathmom, I bet the glitch will work for you. You don’t have to have an ID number as long as you know your ACT username and password to log in. The ACT thread has instructions. If you get stuck, PM me.

That’s the thing, he doesn’t have an ACT account, because we had to sign him up offline. I tried to create one but it couldn’t find a record for him so it said it wouldn’t give access to prior tests, so I figured I’d wait until we got the score report so I can set it up correctly with the ID that links the account to the test he has taken. But until then, no glitch for me.

I’m really hoping for a snow day on Wednesday so DS has some time to study for the SAT. We just got back about thirty minutes ago from his scrimmage and he’s just now hitting the shower after getting a bite to eat. That means homework won’t be started until 10:15 or so, which will leave no time for SAT tonight.

Sent from my SCH-I510 using CC

My S is one of the Michigan juniors who will take the ACT tomorrow. I’m making him a good breakfast. He’s been studying some at home and his school had an ACT Prep class for all the juniors this past trimester. Three different teachers covered the concepts for science, math and English and they took several practice tests. He’s probably as ready as he’ll ever be. In all of his practice math tests, and in his first ACT round, he bombed the geometry questions. He’s been focusing on that. It had been 2 1/2 years since he had any geometry so I think it’s understandable.

He finished second trimester finals today. Looks like he pulled all A’s again this term. His GPA is skyrocketing with all these As in AP classes  He had a couple A-s in 9th grade, including one in GYM of all things.

Nova-I was hoping for that snow day, too, for SAT cramming. Now it doesn’t look too promising :frowning: Just found out we are going to have a conflict for the April ACT and I will have to reschedule for the 2nd time. Arrgh we are going to run out of dates!

S has his last prep class for this week’s SAT tomorrow. Unfortunately soccer practice got rescheduled to overlap with it. Last week, I made him leave practice early for prep, but this week I let him decide and he’s going late to the prep class. I guess we don’t quite get our money’s worth this way, but I am trying to keep our priorities straight. One hour of prep won’t make much difference, and he should be able to enjoy other important things, like being able to play in the first game.

@MImama

Here in Illinois we have an ACT as part of the state test, the PSAE, in late April. It counts as an official ACT, though and it’s paid for by the state.

No chess announcement. :(

If the weather report ends up being correct, we’ll have a snow day tomorrow. I’d actually rather go to school as it would just mean a shorter Easter break.

I guess we’ll see what happens.

Since we’re driving north to get middle son from college on Friday (his Spring break) I’m just glad the snow isn’t scheduled to arrive then.

@Dave Do you know if it is possible for us (Illinois students) to pay for the addition of the writing section for the ACT on the PSAE? I know it doesn’t come with one because the state doesn’t want to pay for it, so if we paid for it could we take the PSAE with ACT writing section?

Creek - that’s terrible. Last year my son and his 2 classmates did the moody’s mega math challenge - his teacher is the one who submitted the chosen question and out of 1200 or so teams, their team ended up about 20th - against schools who actually have teams and practice, not like how our kids just showed up and did it. It was a huge achievement and not a single word was said. They worked for 14 hours on a Sunday and he was so fried and exhausted I let him take the day off - that they counted as unexcused until I said - okay - consider it sick with exhaustion from a school function.

I’m hoping we all panic as usual here and close school on thursday after the storm so we can go prom dress shopping! I’m not a believer in last minute test cramming -you’re either working all along or taking it cold.

Hi All,
Somehow I lost my daily reminder link and forgot to check in. Lots to catch up on. Basketball season ended, and he’s continuing to see improvement in his skills. S’14 decided last week that he had plateaued on his self study of SAT and would like a tutor. He’s a boarding school, so I went on WyzAnt.com and hired a tutor who agreed to work with him afterschool last week and this week. He is pleased with the results so far, and has learned a lot of obscure vocabulary. It’s kind of fun getting daily reports. He’s taking it this weekend, and I’m hoping this will ‘do it’ because I know he has 2 APs and 2 SAT Subjects to do this spring - ick!

Dumb questions - has anyone used a tutor for AP and Subject tests? If so, how often did the tutor meet with your child? How did you find a tutor who ‘specialized’ in these more difficult tests? Do you kids like face to face or online tutoring better?

College Visits - the Road Trip are scheduled for Spring break. We won’t get them all in, particularly because several colleges are on spring break as well. Add to that the complication of only visiting on days that have Engineering department tours, and well, we’ll be putting the miles on - so glad we are only looking in the Northeast!

Waiting for Summer program denials, S is very interested in HCSSiM - their application test problems come out in mid March. Anyone have kids who have gone or want to go?

((shrugs and more shrugs))
ParentSparkle

So S’14 called me at work to tell me that I should be prepared for lower ACT scores than the first time around. Why? Because he had to “go” really badly during English and couldn’t focus. Then he had to “go” so badly during Science he had to leave during the test. He wasn’t able to finish that one.

Off to schedule an April test date…

ParentSparkle, my D1 took the SATs in January and found a wonderful tutor to help her jump her last 100/150 points in the month before the test. I found her tutor through one of the larger tutoring companies in my city. D1 prefers face-to-face just because it keeps her focused and it’s always nicer to have someone next to you to point out your mistakes. I would suggest doing some online research about the major test-prep companies in your city; the larger ones usually cover the SAT as well as more specialized areas (like SAT IIs and APs). D1 will be taking quite a few APs and SAT IIs this May and June, but I’m waiting to see if she needs a tutor until she starts studying during spring break. If she did need one, though, I would probably schedule it at least twice a week (maybe once during the week and once during the weekend?) just because of the limited time before the test.

@2016…, poor thing…I feel for him.
I just finished register for DS for April ACT. Will add “Limit DS liquid in-take” on the things to do/take for ACT. :)

Quick update-- things have been crazy here lately-- D1 is currently studying (cramming) for her exams (midterms/finals) that start tomorrow. She’ll be testing almost every day until next Thursday; her last day of school is Friday, and then she’s on spring break until early April. She’s pretty stressed right now, but she is focused on her work, so I’m sure she’ll be fine. D1 is currently waiting for her regional science fair’s results to be posted-- she’s hoping to move on to the finals-- so hopefully she’ll get news by the end of this week. D2 is going to France on a school trip during spring break, but D1 will be starting to study for her upcoming SAT IIs and APs and preparing for her Robotics team’s regional in April. I keep telling her not to stress, but she’s pretty intense about this whole thing…

Has anyone else been getting crazy amounts of college mail recently? I suspect D1 accidentally bubbled in (or forgot to bubble in) the circle asking about her mail preferences. She’s averaging 13+ letters/brochures from colleges A DAY. It’s gotten so ridiculous that we now sort our mail downstairs and throw away the superfluous documents before we take it back up. She did get a letter from Yale undergraduate admissions today, though, which thrilled her. But this mail thing is getting kind of ridiculous.

DS is getting several e-mails and letters from various colleges on a daily basis.
