Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Catching up on the thread: Creekland – Congrats to your son and boo to his school and to Eyemamom’s school for their shortsightedness. Feel lucky as DD’s school is very good about spreading the joy be it athletics or academics.

Barnardmom – Still chuckling about your son’s dilemma. I can see Spyguy doing the same thing. Hopefully your son did better than he thinks.

Does anyone else feel like the last few months have been a blur?

My S, who is in the 2014 class, has been getting a significant amount of mail from the flagships of other states. I find that very surprising and not likely to be cost effective. Why would flagships waste money sending mail to kids in other states?

Austinareadad, they want the OOS (out of state) tuition.

^ I guess that’s it, but it just seems so unlikely that many Texas kids who could get into their schools could not also get into either UT or A&M or would prefer their schools to UT or A&M. Maybe they just do it nationwide, without considering differences in the circumstances of the kids in different states.

Some kids may want to spread their wings and see different parts of the country. One criticism my DS and many of his friends have about UVA is that it is their high school moved south.

Even at OOS rates public schools may still be less than private schools.

austinareadad,
I kept asking myself the same question until I finally compared their out of state costs, and the fact they were offering money for, what I thought was minimal academic requirements. In fact it was cheaper to go to their flagship.
My personal example:

My instate flagship: $30,000 (tuition, room and board) R&B very high here
OOS flagship: OOS tuition $27,000, R & B $7000 = total $34,000

BUT, in their letter they offered $9000 annually for applicants with 1850 SAT and 3.7 GPA, and continues if student keeps college GPA above 3.0.
That makes it cheaper than my flagstate school - who offers no merit money, only need-based. And athletic scholarships for a few.

OOS school gets more, we pay less, and our instate only accepts about 20% anyway. Problem is, my S does not want to go there…

Agentninetynine, absolutely. I can’t believe it’s already March. Can you believe that in just three months 11th grade will be over and we’ll be the parents of seniors? I still feel like ninth grade was yesterday…

It just seemed strange to me because the only OOS flagships that many kids in this area might consider would be UCLA and UC-Berkeley, and those schools have sent nothing. I guess they don’t have to. I was also a bit surprised by the mailings from Michigan, North Carolina, and Virginia, because almost any kid who can get into those schools OOS should be able to get into UT or A&M, 10% rule or not.

What’s crazy is that this boy rarely goes during the school day. He said it wasn’t that bad during English and he finished ok and was concentrating. He thinks he was doing well on science until those last 5 or 6 questions. He bubbled them in randomly. I think I’ll wait to see the scores before we decide if he is going to take it again. He did respectably in October (better than his sister). Perhaps schools that superscore will be good… lol.

I think the glitch isn’t working, b/c my D’s status is still registered, and not tested. I am obsessed, stop me!

lol @barnardboy. Hopefully it won’t be as bad as he thinks!

Creekland, WE cheer your S’s accomplishment! Sorry the school didn’t make the announcement.

Kids had a day off yesterday, so we took advantage of the day to do a quick visit to a LAC a couple of hours away. I know that DS could potentially receive a substantial amount of merit $ from them and it’s exactly the type of school he has liked…elsewhere. He is very, very hung up on the fact that it’s in-state and he is determined to go someplace else. I pointed out that well over half of the students were from OOS, but then he said he didn’t want to be the “loser in-state kid!” Grrrrr…

Meanwhile, DD liked it, but truthfully, she won’t get the $$ he would get unless her ACT comes up a few points in April, plus it’s not the best for her likely major. As we were driving home, she commented that she is so totally confused about where she should go that she should just go to CC! Both of them expressed that they are tired of college visits and don’t want to see another school. They have each been to 5-6 schools in the course of the past 8 mos or so, which I didn’t think was overkill…but evidently, I was wrong. Yesterday, I talked to a mom who had taken her daughter (a Senior) to see 20 schools, so I pointed out to my kids that it could be a lot worse! At this point, we all have a good feel for what they like, so I guess I will completely back off, except for a scheduled visit to 'Bama with DS in April.

AustinAreaDad - here is a neat map (I had almost forgotten about it until I was reminded of it today): [Where Does Your Freshman Class Come From? - Facts & Figures - The Chronicle of Higher Education](http://chronicle.com/article/Interactive-Freshman-Class/129547/#id=106397) As you can see, there are a lot of Texans that go to school at my state flagship! It helps, that Arkansas gives in-state tuition to bordering states. You can look at some of the other schools that you’re getting mail from to see how many from Texas goes to those schools, as well.

Speaking of mail…we still don’t get near as much as many of you do. We are getting some, but not the stacks. Maybe 1-2 a day…some days none. And some of it seems to be the same schools over and over. I don’t understand with a high-stat S why he isn’t getting more.

^ Thanks for that. I didn’t know that Arkansas gave Texans in-state tuition. I can see how that would improve the chances of a Texas kid considering it.

It may be dependent on a certain ACT or GPA, but seems like it was rather low and attainable for most kids. It’s a good school … it’s not high on DS’ list, though, because like others have said - it’s like an extension of his high school - too many classmates will be going there and he wants a fresh start!

I finally caught up on the reading and have time to post! DD had her wisdom teeth out last Thursday and all seemed to go well. She was pretty sore for a few days but seemed better yesterday and went back to school today…until I got a call from nurse at 1:00 that she was really sick! From conversations with the oral surgeon and her pediatrician’s offices, they don’t think it’s related to the surgery, she was just unfortunate enough to have picked up a stomach virus! Poor thing. She’s sleeping now and slept all afternoon after I brought her home (because she was in no shape to drive herself!) Unfortunately, she threw up again when I was out tonight and her dad was picking up her car from school (not a safe place to leave it overnight). Hoping that’s the end and she’ll turn the corner now. She’s scheduled to take the SAT on Saturday! Luckily Friday is a day off and there’s no way she’s going back to school tomorrow, so she’d only have to make it thru Thursday at this rate. But it will be a lot of work to make up. I just feel so badly for her, especially as she was really feeling better yesterday. Oh, and the show she’s choreographing starts tech week rehearsals on Sunday! Ugh!!

akmom – sorry about your daughter’s experience! Not a fun event at all!

Lots of good info and advice there re: wisdom teeth extraction and the aftermath.

Not a lot of good stuff to report @ Casa Classof2015. D’11 is having a very very rough time at school. I know this is the 2014 kids thread, but I think what I’m only realizing now (since she was my first) is that there is not just one straight path with this whole college thing. If your kid has to withdraw and come home to regroup, that’s ok. If they need therapy, that’s ok. If they need a medical leave of absence, that’s ok. And every text and call, I try to say: I love you.

No matter where our 2014 kids land, nothing’s more important than their health. Not GPA, not school rank – nothing.

Classof2015 - (((HUGS))) Thank you for the reminder and sorry that you have had to learn it first hand. :(

akmom - hope your D is on the road to recovery with both the tooth extraction and the stomach virus!! What a horrible day she’s had with the virus!

I was not aware of the Arkansas thing for neighboring states (we are in Louisiana). Good to know. I have a kid who very much wants to go away. But not too far, or anywhere too cold. Probably wants to stay in the South.

Sorry to hear things are rough for D '11, Classof15. You’re right, it isn’t always a straight path. Heck, life is rarely a straight path, but everything happens for a reason in the long haul.

Also sorry to hear about akmom’s D. That’s really rough.
