Parents of the HS Class of 2014

dd here is also in the midst of the SAT today. It’s her second sitting. Her first score was fine, but she wanted to do better. She did study a bit for it this time around, but not quite as much as I would have liked! The good news is that she seemed very relaxed heading out this morning.

NewHaven, DS 12 applied to several CTCL schools. We went to one of their fairs we were impressed by several of them. Many were also very generous with merit money. He didn’t end up at one, but several would have been good fits. dd will also apply to a couple. Certainly worth looking at them (and the book!).

DS arrives home for Spring Break on Wednesday. So looking forward to seeing him again!

Here’s hoping that all of our kids taking the SAT today are successful!

Thank you, Captain, for the report on the SAT! Hoping your daughter rocked it! Will compare notes when DD comes home in a couple of hours.

Waiting for D to get back from the SAT. It was at her school (30 min away) so lots of friends also took it. She and bf are going out to lunch and coming back here. She liked the SAT better than the ACT. The essay was something to do with details.

We will impatiently wait for scores, I guess no glitches on the SAT to find out early.

In even more important news - we got her prom dress! We went to NoVa to get away from any possible local overlaps, not to mention the shopping is much better out there than our little area with no mall or stores beyond Fashion Bug. Don’t tell her, she really got a bridesmaids dress. I’m guessing high school girls are now amazons as she needed what must have been a foot cut off the bottom. And that was with 4 inch heels on!

I set one tour up so far for spring break and I need to get on the ball. S came home for his first spring break - so grown up now.

Welcome, Minnymom and ProfDad!

Eyemamom, glad to see you have your priorities straight re:prom dress! SAT, SchmesAT - what really matters is that they’re happy at prom!! I’m sort of sad that our last one at home is a boy - no more dress drama for us!

Well K2 said the first SAT experience was like the PSAT. So we will see if there is score improvement with it being the middle of spring semester etc…

K2 said a kid in the room got taken out and couldn’t finish the test because the pic on the admit ticket was a side-ish profile and didn’t fit the SAT reqs for pics etc.
Evidently the “mother” took the pic and it “was the best they could do”…
hmmm…

fog - wow! I wonder if they suspected it wasn’t the same kid. How hard was it to just take a picture and upload it? They were pretty clear on acceptable pictures.

Apparently sailing starts this week, even if it’s only in the 40’s and low 50’s. That’ll be motivation to not capsize, whereas when it gets in the high 80’s they don’t seem to mind as much. Their school is on a little bay off a river (built way before waterfront property was so valuable). Seems every spring sport sneaks a swim in the water when the adults aren’t looking.

AvonHSDad - my S had essentially the exact assessment of the test that your D did. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. He’ll likely be testing again in June, but maybe we’ll be surprised.

Fogfog - S said there was one young lady in his room that almost couldn’t take the test. She didn’t realize she needed a picture ID. I’m not sure how she missed that instruction (or how good her CR score ended up!), but she missed it. Somebody in her family rushed it in. I can’t imagine that was a good way to start the test for her - unless she does better with stress hormones flowing. (Ironically, some do.)

ProfDad - welcome!

No prom dresses here at all - all boys.

Oh, and our high school had us college bound kids take the SAT and ACT (once each). I still remember my scores as our school was fairly competitive. My older two boys have similar scores. My youngest… his forte/niche is in things not tested on those tests. I wish they would put Bio on it (ACT science is NOT science). He was one of 9% (of test takers) in our state to test advanced in the inaugeral Keystone tests back when he was in 9th grade and likely aced it. But math? English? Little interest to learn these on his own and a poor school district to build the foundation. He wants to be out in the wild working as one with it. It wasn’t even our school district that is responsible for his Bio knowledge (most did poorly on that test - and this later one). He was just studying aspects of Bio from todlerhood on. If only he’d put in a tenth of his effort to test prep he’d do fine, but no interest.

Welcome 2014ProfDad, it’s always nice to have a fellow Dad around here.

Hopefully the curve for CR is not as harsh as the January 2013 curve. My D took her first SAT last January and the curve for CR was the harshest in recent history.

For CR, -1 is 780, -2 is 770. Usually -2 is 800. So maybe the test was easy and/or there are a lot of students that aced the CR section thus the harsh curve.

For curve history, see this:

http://www.erikthered.com/tutor/SAT-Released-Test-Curves.pdf

Still waiting for DD to get home. How long are these tests? I’m dreading the curve as Spygirl is not a CR kind of kid. Which is odd as she is one of the top students in her honors English class.

I have read that this past Jan’s CR curve was harsh. The Dec 2012 CR allowed -3 for 770 whereas I believe the Jan allowed only -2 for 770. Hope the exam went well for all of today’s test takers.

I thought January’s math curve was harsh also – one wrong was 760.

Do any of the CTCLs offer 4-year accredited engineering degrees? We took a look a while back but I didn’t think we found schools with engineering programs beyond pre-engineering, but I may be wrong about that.

Hope the SATs went well for everyone! DD said it was okay. I asked her if it was what she expected and was like the practice tests she had taken. She didn’t realize that the kids would be taking different sections at different times! When the instructor said it was okay to use a calculator if you have a math section, she wasn’t sure what exactly he meant. Until she realized she had a math section after the writing and her friend didn’t! Guess we forgot to mention that part with all the practice tests!

Hoping we can do some prom dress shopping in two weeks! She’s going to two proms and has one dress already but needs a second one. Got a great deal on the first one so maybe we can repeat on the next one! She’s off to chaperone her school’s Freshman/Sophomore Semi tonight. She needs to be a bit dressed up but not as much as the attendees. Should be a fun night for her!

I can assure you, colleges know the curve. I know my sons school essentially viewed 750 - 800 as the same score. Once you’re that high, adcoms get you’re talking one or two wrong in the entire section.

All you with moms of boys - I have an older son, now I have a d going through it all. I will be the nice mom though and invite the boys parents over for pictures. I was never invited either year and didn’t get good pictures either year. The moms said they’d send me pics, and never did. I think d is already planning on a big group thing beforehand so that may take care of it.

No report from S3 yet. He went straight to his EC which meets until later this evening. It’s not like anything he tells me is going to change what’s already happened…soooo. I suspect he’ll say he felt good, give an opinion on the essay prompt and leave it at that.

S3 is home for spring break. I thought he might want to do something with his rm’s or fraternity brothers but he said a) he’s exhausted and really wants to sleep, and b) didn’t want to spend the $ without an internship secured for summer yet. He’s responsible for books, spending $, and fraternity expenses. He’s done really well managing his money, even telling us over winter break he didn’t need so much $/week for food, we should drop the amount for second semester. Today I’ve just busied myself making his favorite soup (not hard, just time consuming), and started his laundry. DH was mean and woke him up around 1:30. I would have let him sleep. Longer breaks I prefer routine, but shorter breaks I’m indulgent.

There are very few times I will have all three of my boys under this roof again so I savor it. Next year brings many changes with S3s graduation and launch, DHs retirement and move to private industry (no idea where a new job will take us), and S1 (21) is exploring the Air Force. Lots and lots of changes on the horizon.

Wow blue - that’s a lot! Do you sleep at night with all that? Any idea where you could be moving?

DD seemed fairly happy with her SAT today. Had the math up front and reading at the end, which she didn’t think was optimal since for her that meant that the harder parts were when she was tired, and she wasn’t thrilled with the essay prompt, but she definitely feels good that the whole thing is over. I hope we don’t have to do it again. She came home and immediately dove into the pile of IB homework that accumulated while she was doing practice tests last week – it is relentless. Only two more weeks until spring break!

Sometimes not a lot tbh. I’ve asked DH to stop telling me anything about ppl contacting him at this point, etc. It’s too stressful and overwhelming to hear about different Cos, where they are located, etc. When he formally signs with a head-hunter this summer, then he can tell me who the major players are. Until then it’s all just noise, but noise that will stress me to the max! S3 and I have both made it exceptionally clear we do NOT want to leave the state. It’s been duly noted, but we’re not the one’s job hunting.

I think it’s terrible that you were excluded from picture taking! Only S2 has been interested in dances, and has gone in large groups. Someone always hosted pictures where all parents were invited. We usually had a glass of wine and snacks. How very, very rude that your sons dates parent didn’t think to include you. You are sweet to remember how it felt and make sure your DDs dates parents are included.

NOTE: In the post above the student home for spring break is obviously S2, not S3. I didn’t catch it in time to edit it within the post. It would be so much easier and less confusing with three of one gender to write their names, but there’s that darn privacy issue, lol.

@NewHaven: D14 is intrigrued by Clark U, one of the CTCL’s. I’m not sure how she heard about it.

Any Michigan parents know how long until we’ll see the ACT results from Tuesday? I’m guessing sometime during spring break. No college visits for us this spring break, at least not in the US. We have to visit D10 who is studying abroad this semester. Tough, right? But it’s a parental responsibility…

Yup, -2 was 750. I think -4 was 700.
