@beady, Most schools DO boast high med school matriculation rates d/t them cherry picking the applicants that they will endorse. One must have GPA, EC’s, MCAT scores etc in order to get the nod from the advisors. I just visited the Hendrix website and expected to hear Born a Hootchie Kootchie Man in the background! :)

@eye, I am glad that those dresses are long, DD is an amazon(5’11) and some of the dresses that she finds (as in the words of my southern grandmother), show too much of her business! God forbid if she has to bend over to retrieve a dropped item on the ground!!!

Welcome 2014Profdad! It looks like you have arrived just in time for all of the junior year madness…

NewHavenCTmom: My oldest son kept one of the CTCL schools on his list until the end. (I got my masters from there years ago) He applied, got in and was offered a full tuition scholarship. He really liked the school. It offered a very strong math and science program, was small and personal and the housing was nice. I’ve told Son '14 that we’re going to tour the school this summer. He really does not have a lot of interest in the place, but he could run track and cross country there, and they award lots of credit for APs.

I have several former students who attend Lynchburg College (VA), and they really love it. All got great financial packages. Two have been involved in athletics. One played collegiate volleyball and did theater. I have a good friend who attend Emory & Henry College (VA) and loved it. She played tennis. Her husband played football. Both are educators.

Juniata College in PA has an excellent science program. One of my teacher friends has a son who graduated from there and went to the U. of Kentucky’s med school. He is quite successful.

Meanwhile, Son ’ 14 seemed pleased with his SAT. Liked the essay prompt. Felt the math went really well. Is hoping for some improvement in all areas. We’ll see in 19 days.

Good morning, all. It’s supposed to be nice and warm today, so perfect for standing outside for two soccer games!

DS felt better about yesterday’s SAT than January’s and thought the math was easier. We shall see.

Re: short dresses. My DD is no Amazon as she barely hits 5 feet although she is only 13 and still had growing to do, but some dresses would still show too much of her business. Shewears compression shorts under them, and has also perfected the art of bending at the knees while keeping them together to retrieve low items. One of the lessons learned from cotillion classes!

Happy Sunday all! I first heard about the optional detailed SAT score report here (forgot the name–I think it’s several letters…$18, you order it from college board). After learning about it on this thread, my D, who took the January SAT, ordered it and it still hasn’t come. Has anyone here ordered it (for the Jan SAT) and received it? Seems surprising it’s taking so long…

In our case, D didn’t love her January scores and had planned to take yesterday’s but realized she wouldn’t have time to study so she’ll take it again in June (May will be subject tests along with APs) – can’t believe how test-heavy spring is!

NewHaven - had to google “Born a Hootchie Kootchie Man” to get the reference! haha Was afraid it was going to be more of a reference to it being in Arkansas (you know, the old barefoot & pregnant type reference!). Glad to see it was in reference to Jimi instead!

Do any of you read some of the college search messages and see your kids in them? There was one from a kid interested in the same major that described his stats and EC’s - all the way down to playing bass guitar - that could have been my son posting! I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn’t! Anyway, that’s why I love this forum so much - whatever you’re looking for, someone else has the same questions!!

NovaMom - glad the weather is nice for your sport watching today!! I’m trying to decide if the sun is going to come out today here or not!

We received two magazines yesterday one general and one major specific that had a lot of private colleges. I encouraged DS to look at the major specific one to get ideas. No … didn’t want to. Me: How are you going to know which college is for you, or do you just want to go to the school here in town? DS: I’ll know when I visit. … I didn’t know we were going to visit every school in the country! LOL And he hasn’t even been involved in picking out the ones that we have scheduled! Do they ever wake up and become interested in this process???

Good Morning!
I agree with Beadymom about the lack of involvement in looking at colleges. DS2 got the same large private school magazine… could care less. He also got “Yale Mail”… not at all impressed as he says it is all junk mail. He is right to a degree- but I call it “targeted junk mail.” And it is all really to raise level of awareness. I am very aware- He is not so much!
DS2 felt pretty good about yesterday’s SAT. He said it felt like all the practice tests at his prep class (those scores are not however his goal scores), so we will see in 3 weeks. Today we are battling over his need to complete a summer seminar application and his need to do APUSH homework. I want him to work on the application this afternoon- when I am available to assist him, but he doesn’t want to do APUSH homework this evening (that he does on his own… I watch “The Good Wife” and get ready for the workweek.) After SAT yesterday, it doesn’t seem fair that more work looms today, but that is how it is for HS Juniors who want to go away to college. Wish me luck!

beady - no, some kids never get with the program. People on the rest of this site would torture me in the town square, but I primarily did the research and set up the college visits for both kids. Their grades, scores, ec’s, etc will be what gets them in. But both were completely certain that I was better at pulling it all together. And trust me, I kept saying, if there is ANYTHING you have an inkling you want to see, let me know.

So in the end the lists came from their work, but my research.

With K1 I handed the big book over–it sat for months…it was too overwhelming and with limited time, all APs, a sport etc…

soooo

I cross referenced intended major with colleges in certain regions that had the sport…and put post its on the pages…

from there
K1 read basic descriptions etc of about 75 schools and eliminated many…

from that
we began the lists, chart, etc and visits…
did one trip soph spring, did one jr spring, and did one long weekend before sr yr because those two schools were “show the love” schools and added to the list last minute…

With K2 its a different kid on the couch, different goals however
last spring
we did the “this is what a college looks like tour”…a few schools, rural, suburbs, large state, small private…

In 2 weeks we are seeing schools with intended major and EC/sport. More are reachy then I’d like, and we have a few matches.
If SAT scores and LORs and being in a competitive private in an under-represented state/region help–then K2 has a shot for a few of the more “reachy” ones…
One I am inclinded to skip and add another on in its place… it means just walking the campus on our own…however its a better fit on paper.

GC’s inital recs to K2 are nothing like what K2 has liked…however am inclined to do a couple of long weekends at the end of summer/early fall to let K2 see some just in case there is a change of heart…and K2 goes in another direction from recent tastes…

GC might be concerned about admitability—from what I see the scattergrams of cappex etc indicate as much

No one from our hs has attended many of these smaller LACs (different region) so Naviance is no help

collage1, we ordered the Q&A for the Jan SAT when we registered for the jan SAT. It’s supposed to arrive 6 - 8 weeks after the test. Still hasn’t arrived. S liked two of his scores from the Jan test and took the test yesterday hoping to raise his score in one section a lot, and would love to raise his scores in the other two sections too but there isn’t much room there. Jan test had a harsh curve all around. -1W was a 75 (w/o essay scored added) and -3 CR was a 730. math was his worst section. hoping for a much better curve on the march test. he thought the test, while harder than the jan one, was a better test for him. one of my friends who went thru this process last year says that the next 2 1/2 weeks are the longest 2 1/2 weeks ever ;-)

DD came home from Saturday’s SAT not happy. She was looking to improve her Writing section and felt she had–although she had a different essay topic than I think the Eastcoasters. Her’s was something about setting goals and satisfaction. The November SAT had a tough math curve–one wrong was 770 but she felt that the math this time around was confusing. Chalking it up to an “off” day and encouraging her to “move on.”

She definitely preferred the ACT and her score reflected it. At this point, I’m thinking she’s done with SAT testing and will take the ACT one more time to see if she can raise her math section.

I think the pressure now to improve one section may be getting to her. Argh.

Blueiguana–hang in there with all the changes ahead for you and your family. And while your darling husband may have the new job, be sure to let your feelings be heard. Starting over in a new city can be stressful and since you won’t have the kids in school any more, connecting with a new community can be more challenging. Having helped many families relocate, I have found that the focus can often be on the best job opportunity which doesn’t always translate into the best happy family opportunity.

RM, thanks for the info–that’s one heck of a curve! I wonder if anyone’s ever done an analysis of the curve by date over time and if January tends to have a tougher curve. Not sure why that would be…anyway, I just called CB and we should receive our score reports by March 14 – they were mailed Feb 28 and I don’t know how they’re shipped but it takes up to 14 days to receive them!

go2mom - Thanks. I hear you loud and clear, and this is not lost on DH. I do not ‘relocate’ well. Some people do it seamlessly throughout their lives and just seem to pick up in a new location without a problem. I am not one of them. We will get there when we get there, but the overwhelming preferable option is to stay here. There would have to be an exceptionally compelling reason to leave. I don’t deal well with variables, so this many at one time is not optimal. There’s a lesson in here somewhere I just don’t feel like digging for it right now, lol. ;)

Happy Monday, all! I am dragging today as the time change is a bear when one gets up at 5:30 a.m.

Turns out Spygirl was very nervous about the SAT, something she didn’t share with me until afterwards. She had to rebubble her name as she forgot a letter in our last name. And she forgot how to spell the state in which we reside Mercy me. Hope she did better on the rest of the test.

We are all relieved that one test is over, for now. She has her junior year project due in a few weeks and then hopefully, she can relax for a while over spring break, before the ACT. I don’t know how people with twins survive junior year.

My S '14 took the SAT yesterday - after setting the clocks forward! He is a boarding student and I was really impressed that he was up in time to catch the shuttle and apparently had his admission ticket and calculator and sharpened pencils all packed and ready. Now to wait the 20 days to see how the scores look. I would so love for him to get ‘good enough’ and be able to move on to getting ready for his 3AP in May and 2 Subject tests in June. I’m also wondering if he should get the subject tests over with in May so he has more time to study for finals, which start June 10.

Advice?

Also, if anyone could explain - in small, easy words - how the scoring for the Sunday test dates goes. It seems that far fewer kids take the Sunday dates, and I wonder how the norming can be correct with such a small number. Not that it matters, but it’s where my nervousness is fixating right now.

Thanks - and the brunch sounded delicious!
PS

Will the subject tests align with the subjects he will have finals on in June? If so, I’d do June. All the studying for subject tests will help for the finals, and would he really start studying for finals that far in advance anyhow?

Last year my daughter took SAT II Biology in May, few days before her AP Bio test. I just registered her to take the SAT II Chem in May just few days again before the AP test. She also might take SAT II Lit since she will also take AP Lit test. Two birds with one stone. But if your son is not taking the equivalent AP test for the Subject test that he’ll be taking, then June might be better. Just in time for finals.

ParentSparkle - I believe the norms are set when the questions (or ones like them) appear on the experimental sections of tests, and are already set when the actual test is taken. Perhaps if a question is way off, it is not used in the final score calculation? <– Just my surmise.
