Parents of the HS Class of 2014

We’re packing up too: visiting eight schools on our list this week, none closer than 2500 miles from home. Sigh. DD is looking to get feel of urban/suburban/rural, women’s versus co-ed, research-focused Ivy versus undergrad-focused liberal arts college. As a professor, I’ll be looking for how engaged the faculty seem to be with the campus and students. Do they care, and are they proud of what they do, or is it just a place to work and do they wish they were elsewhere? I know people most places we are going, but I think we’ll try to stay incognito for now. Given the long list, we were ruthless about not visiting places on spring break next week – might as well catch them in the summer. The next year is looking pretty daunting.

Looking forward to all of the reports from these great college visits!

The exhaustive spreadsheet isn’t for my kid to review but for me to help guide him on appropriate schools. He’s so busy with his commute, sports, schoolwork, etc, just like all our juniors that he simply doesn’t have time to filter the data to find all the DIII engineering schools with fewer than 10,000 undergrads that have his sport, in a locale that he might like, where his scores make it a good fit blah blah blah in order to formulate a possible list.

So I do that for him, and at our weekly college chat, we talk about the possible schools I’ve found to see if there is further interest. Then he visits the websites and gets in touch with coaches. I keep track of all the recruiting stuff too. That adds another layer of complexity.

I also have a form for visits, but it’s just a way to record impressions and to make it consistent to make sure we cover similar items across schools. Hopefully this will help us keep track of the various schools.

I view the college process as a long term project that is going to potentially cost me $250,000 out of pocket and four years of DS’s life so I want to have all the data in hand. Plus I am a data hound in general so spreadsheets make me happy LOL.

S14 attends high school 1/2 day taking honors and AP classes and spends the other half of the day at a technical school learning computer programming.

Can/will a student receive college credit for completing a 2 year program at a technical school in computer programming?

These are the courses that will have been completed:
8207310 Introduction to Information Technology1 credit
9007210 Foundation of Programming 1 credit
9007220 Procedural Programming 1 credit
9007230 Object-Oriented Programming Fundamentals 1 credit
9007410 .NET Application Development Foundation 1 credit
9007420 .NET Application Development Applied 1 credit
9007430 .NET Application Development Capstone 1 credit

Do you know if the program is part of Project Lead the Way or another established program? The technical school should know if their courses are typically eligible for credit. In the end it will depend where he ends up as well. Some schools are more liberal with credit for courses taken during HS than others.

cruisnfamily, most colleges won’t give “double” credit – so if your S’s technical courses are counting towards his high school degree, he probably won’t get college credit as well. Otherwise the credits may depend on the college and program he ends up at. As a quick guess, he might get credit for one or two intro to computing classes - similar to the credit given for an AP Computer Science test score - in a BSCS program. (Is that his goal?) My reasoning is that the typical BSCS program does not include a lot of “programming” classes or specific useful areas such as .NET development.

Good for your son though! Mine wishes he was doing that - he is so done with taking his other core classes and just wants to write games all night. :)

My S’14 called me to let me know he qualified for the BPA Nationals! He’s going to Disney World May 8-12. Thankfully, he won’t miss any AP exams, but he’ll have to do some studying while he’s there.

Congrats BarnardSon!

As far as the “double credit” thing. He is currently taking AP and Dual enrollment classes which will count towards high school and also college. So I was wondering if the technical school classes would work the same way. There’s been no mention of this from the tech school as it is mostly an adult school with students that have long ago finished hs so I’m guessing they’re not focusing as much on what the hs students might gain.

I’ll have to call over there and see what they have to say. I know he’ll have some certifications when he finishes and their claim is that the students could go directly into the workforce and earn a good living with their skills. But he, of course, will be going to college first.

Yes, his goal is a bachelors degree in some type of computer studies. He loves the tech school program so this is definitely his area. Just not sure of the specific degrees that might be good for him.

On our way from U1 to U2. Since we left Friday night the expected weather has changed from sunny & low 50s w/ one day of rain to snow flurries during our tour yesterday, and rain snow mix the rest of the trip. Obviously the system changed trajectory while we’ve been in ‘college visit bubble’ and happily away from 24/7 news. Thank goodness for goretex jackets, boots, and layers. I hope others traveling that were anticipating snow aren’t getting pummeled, are safe, and travel plans don’t have to be altered. These are well orchestrated trips with a lot of planning. You usually don’t think about snow in late March.

Winter Storm Virgil has its first casualty: Johns Hopkins. :(

The last thing I wanted to do was drive through a snowstorm … So we opted to pass on Johns Hopkins and are instead holed up in Philly til Tues.

Ugh.

KaKa–that is a pity as the Hopkins presentation was impressive. My S will not be applying (well beyond his stats) but we visited there while in the ‘figuring out big/little, research/LAC’ schools and the entire family was impressed by the presentation. Also, the campus was much prettier than I had been led to believe by my HS friends who attended nearly 30 years ago. I think Bloomberg’s millions have had a positive impact on the look of the campus.

We’re on a snow delay (school day) today. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look promising for going - which means we’ll end up going one day later in June. UGH! I’d rather drive through the snow (not much and I grew up further north where we wouldn’t have even been delayed for the couple inches we have), but my view is definitely in the minority around here.

I do hope those of you doing visits are safe and can see through any weather. This much snow around here this time of year is definitely unusual. It’s also more snow than we’ve had most of the winter. Normally we’ve got some of our garden planted by now and last year we had fruit trees blooming…

We were scheduled for a school visit today in NJ, but we skipped it. We are a few hours away and the driving would have been a pain. But the weather looks to be clearing for the rest of the week.

surprising weather for late March…hope all are safe. Thanks Anjin for update, hope it is clear tomorrow up North. traveling from (embarrassed to admit) sunny 85 degree Florida, so feel so removed from knowing what’s really happening up North. We leave early morn for our NE tour, starting in Philly…

kind of overwhelmed with all the schools and travel plans, (planes, trains, buses, subways oh my_, but I think once we’re actually in motion it will feel more manageable.

may we enjoy some bonding time with our juniors…

Have fun lindz. Weather doesn’t seem too bad after all the forecasts. Just cold and wet, but not so white.

I don’t know how Baltimore faired, but Philly’s snowstorm was a bust. Nothing on the ground at all. Sigh.

And I made a wrong turn TWICE and had to pay $5 each time to come back from Jersey.

Hoping everyone will be able to salvage their visit plans. Ours are still 3 weeks away so I really hope by then we won’t have to deal with snow! But we still have large piles around here and supposedly we may get a bit more tonight. DD14 is learning to drive a bit in it but some days it’s been so bad that even I wasn’t too thrilled about doing the driving. And DS11 really wanted to hit some golf balls when he was home on vacation last week - ha!

KaMaMom - I think you were paying to get OUT of NJ ;)

We leave Thursday morning so hopefully the weather will have settled a bit.

2014profdad - after reflecting a bit on your spring break comment we dropped Elon and redirected to William and Mary. We only have 2 days, so we need to make the most of the time. Thanks!

lindz126 - I second your bonding comment - though S2 may have a different view!:D

initiatelaunch, I think that’s what KaMaMom said (in a roundabout way).

KaMaMom, did you get confused at the Ben Franklin Bridge ramps?
