Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Welcome Stefalis and LOL NewHaven at getting lost in Rhode Island. It does sound like a successful trip: she figured out some dislikes and found a Like!

I had a great Pennsylvania road trip this weekend. University of Scranton, Susquehanna Open House and Saint Joseph’s Open House. My D loved all of them. That never happened before on any of my previous road trips with my other kids. We did tour of URI, D did not like it, and a few Ohio colleges last weekend. I am exhausted but my D found a safety, match and reach schools that she loves so I am also relieved.

S '14 texted me and asked if I could go on CC and get recommendations for prep books for AP Physics B and AP English Composition. Aww, he knows how to make me feel all warm inside.
Any ideas?
(I will search the depths of CC, but am a little daunted)
PS

ParentSparkle, check out this forum: [AP Tests Preparation - College Confidential](AP Test Preparation - College Confidential Forums).

so cute that your son sent you here for advice Parentsparkle. My S12 and D13 enjoyed making fun of my CC addiction, but would also occasionally acknowledge how much I learned here. ;)

My DS did something similar last week. When he got home from the ACT, he asked what the word on the street (CC) was about the test! haha! So I promptly pulled up the ACT threads and read him some of the comments. ;)

See
we are appreciated!!

@beadymom
“we” are appreciated? HA!! Speak for yourself!! LOLL my dd thinks I am the biggest PIA there is! LOL
but I don’t care! Her opinion doesn’t count right now. :)

What she hated about Clark U was the neighborhood
a reasonable facsimile of our own
she says she will not trade one hood for another. And the campus left much to be desired. Nothing special at all. I bet you can google earth the streets surrounding it
that just occurred to me, wish I had thought of that before.

Holy C’s campus was far different/ very nice
but NO diversity whatsoever. Even the way they dressed was the same

Conn College had very little diversity, but the vibe was different. The campus was GORGEOUS, immaculate, she loved the student panel that was held in Blaustein Humanities Center. They discussed the supportive, challenging environment @ CC. The tour guides were interesting and knowledgable, the info session given by William Tran was funny and nothing like I had ever seen at a info session in the past.

The urm’s that we spoke to said they were enjoying their time there & would do it all over again. All four had been accepted to some Ivies as well as highly selective LACs
and the food in the Harris Refectory dining hall was very good.

Morning all!

Just wanted to report on our two recent campus tours. Earlier this month we toured Virginia Tech. Son is not an engineering/architecture major, nor is he a football fan. Despite that (and the 5 inches of snow! In April!), he really liked the campus. Even though it is quite large (31,000 students), for some reason, it just didnt feel HUGE. We had a nice chat with a representative from the Liberal Arts College, enjoyed a tasty lunch and learned a lot. The tour was a success.

We also toured William and Mary this weekend. As I was afraid of, it was true love. The campus was gorgeous, the students were bright and engaged. I loved hearing about the traditions. The food was meh, but we were told that it is improving. It felt very comfortable to us, and reminded us of another campus we toured last fall. It is son’s first choice now, and a bit of a reach. As of now he does not have the stats to get in. Maybe the tour will motivate him to actually study?

DD has now switched from “registered” to "tested! What is the glitch on the ACT website that we can use? I can’t remember what it was

@spritle

5 inches of snow? In VA?? In April?? Really? Wow!!! That’s unreal! :(

DS is “tested” as well, but it says “sorry your transaction cannot be completed at this time”??

Go2Mom - Eyemamom - help!!! :)

@NewHavenCTmom - The snow was ridiculous!! They were expecting rain, not snow. Luckily, they received the snow the day before the tour, so by the time the tour started, it was sunny with snow on the ground and trees! I asked if snow in April was normal and our tour guide said she came on her spring break a few years ago and it snowed then too!

I just used the glitch and S went up by 2 points.
His Math went down but even super-scored he would end up with the same composite.
We will have to send both scores anyway since he only took writing the first time.

Google Glitch or go look at the ACT forum. Some tips: you have to use Chrome and you have to get to the screen where you have already entered your password 2x. for me I have to type the code and not copy and paste it.
Keep trying and make you sure you have every symbol correctly.
Good luck.

Glitch is not working for me. I don’t know if its because I am not doing it correctly, or if its because this is my son’s first time taking the ACT test or if its because he did the writing portion. It says “tested” by his name. I guess I will have to wait for the results like most everyone else. It would have been nice to know though

Argh! DD’s April test is still"registered." Remember, you need to be “Tested” to see scores. Here’s what I copied:

1) Get your September test ID (write it down)
2) Now log into one of your old tests. You should see a “download student score report pdf” link.
3) Copy the url and paste it into your address bar.
4) Replace the ID with your September test ID.
5) Finally, add (without quotes) “javascript:” to the beginning of the url
6) It should look like this:“javascript:displayWindow(‘actibeCTsdScoresPr t.jsp?pdf.x=1&regId=youridhere’,800,800)”

Some VERY good news
dd just found out that she was selected as a QuestBridge College Prep Scholar. So exciting!! What a great way to show her that all of her hard work IS paying off.

NewHavenMom–Congrats! All that nagging has paid off!

@NewHavenCTmom, congrats to your D for QuestBridge.

THANK YOU!!!

You guys have no idea what this means for her
one step closer to pulling herself up & out!! She will have to go through the whole app process(which is excruciatingly tedious/laborious) again in the fall for the College Match Progam, but rumor has it that students who are selected at this level are in very good contention for the next, more important scholarship phase

I am so elated
you have no idea
:)

Congratulations NewHavenCTmom! Your comment about “one step closer to pulling herself up and out” made me teared up and wanted to give you a pat in person for all of that support and help (sometimes as a nag but tough love is also needed)! Congratulations to you too Mom! Have a great week.

Enjoyed reading everyone’s school visits and hearing about the different schools and campuses. We are probably visiting NYU and Fordham next month after AP exams but for now we are staying put.

CONGRATS! NewHavenMom! I am sure the next round will get a bit easier since you have been through the app process once before! Yay!
