Lawrence University it’s in Appleton Wisconsin. It’s on my son radar

ahhhh! that’s it. Someone told me to look into that one for my S too.

@hoosier96 – A co-worker of mine out here in California (with Western PA/OH roots) has two kids who went to Denison. A really good and interesting school. They both had a very positive experience there, and have been successful after graduation. And BTW, I’m pretty sure that Denison won the NCAA Div III men’s swimming championship this past year.

My S16 was accepted to Eckerd College in St. Pete, FL, another one of the ‘Colleges That Change Lives’. It turned out to not be his top choice, but I cannot overstate how impressed we were with this school that we’d never heard of prior to embarking on this whole college admissions bit.

D is looking at Eckerd College (and also Flagler in St. Augustine) on the recommendation of family members who have been students there. Flagler has a gorgeous location and campus, but both have been good choices for the cousins.

My sister went to Eckerd shortly after the name changed to Eckerd. My BIL is on faculty their and so of course both nephews went there :)>- I’ve always been amazed at the individual attention given to each student at Eckerd.

I think this is all becoming more real for S16. He has been noticing “lasts” lately–as in last HS baseball game for the seniors, last day at school for the seniors, etc. This was the first year he really had friends in the senior class so he said school would be “weird” today without them. I can only hope this will motivate him to work harder towards where he is headed after all those lasts. He gets good grades but is always content to be in the top 20 rather than motivated to be the top.

S is really busy - two final projects in the AP classes, one final to take, a pops concert and the musical opening night this weekend. He did send me a quick email and his SAT II score for Chem is out. He did really well - but he is so clueless He had to ask me if that was considered a good score! Honestly, I don’t know what world this kid is in some days…

DS will be taking the SATII in Chem in june. any pointers? not that he will listen to me! %-( that’s him, holding his ears when I make any kind of suggestion…

My son got his Bio (720) and US History scores (690). He’s a bit disappointed. He felt very prepared for history (but prepped more for AP style questions than the SAT II) and so is bummed that he didn’t break 700. I hope the AP went welll- he studied so hard for it and has done so well in the class (considered probably the hardest class in our school). I am guessing that the 690 is not going to do him any favors so we probably won’t use it. Now I wonder if the 720 in Bio is OK? Oh well, he has next year to take Math II and maybe chemistry. Maybe he will spend more time with the review book…

@momofzag FYI

@Hoosier96

I know that the percentiles are not great for either of those scores but the group who take the subject tests is pretty self selecting. I have always heard that you want to at least get above 700 to show a level of mastery of the subject material. I was hoping that a 720 wouldnt hurt him at least.

momofzag, if he’s not happy with his scores he can retake the tests. I think it depends on the school as to what is an acceptable score. Many schools don’t even require SAT II tests.

FYI I have attach a link for colleges and Universities that require SAT Subject test. Be fore warn it keeps changing and currently Havard has announced that they will admit with out them.
Has Havard goes a lot will follow

<a href=“SAT Subject Tests - What Colleges Require Them?”>http://collegeapps.about.com/od/sat/a/sat-subject-test-required.htm

Thanks. I am aware. He is not going to retake either of these tests. If he wasn’t prepared now after just having taken the AP class, he is certainly not going to be better prepared in the future when the material isn’t fresh. (and for those who self study for these without taking classes, more power to them but I can’t imagine either of my kids or myself doing that.) I also know that most schools don’t require them, although you can use them at some test flexible schools. I guess I was just hoping for better as S is going to have a very high GPA in most rigorous classes but very little in the way of ECs other than sports (and not good enough to be recruited). I thought he was going to be a strong standardized test taker, but maybe not. His PLAN looks good except writing is dismal compared to the Math, Reading and Sciences scores (and I don’t mean CC dismal). PSAT CR and M looked OK (though not NMF level) but again the writing section was awful. It will all work out. I just wanted him to have the most possible options since he doesn’t know what he wants to do yet.

@momofzag - I wouldn’t worry about SAT II percentile rankings. I agree with you - any score over 700 is a good score. And since most schools don’t require or recommend SAT II tests, I wouldn’t send any scores that you felt didn’t represent the kid’s ability in a good light. D had two SAT II test and one of them wasn’t a great score (650 I think) and she didn’t end up sending the scores in at all. Don’t think this hurt her in the admissions cycle.

S looked like a great standardized test taker when he was younger. But the last two years have been good, not fabulous. I am guessing he will end up a good SAT score - not jaw dropping, but a good one for most schools he will want to apply to. And that’s good enough for me.

@drmom123 - I assume you were asking me or my son for pointers on the Chem Sat II test? I have none to offer since I am so out of the loop But will check with S next week and post if he has any. We had talked to his AP Chem teacher a month ago and his opinion was that if they had prepared well for their AP test, they were very prepared for the SAT II. I am hoping the good score in the SAT II is an indication that the AP score will also be good Any idea when those scores come out? I think it is sometime in the summer, but not sure…

AP scores should be available in early July

Do you think it’s ok to send the GC an end of year thank you gift? He has gone above and beyond for me and my daughter. I want to thank him for the time he has taken in straightening out D’s transcripts and educating us on the way things are done in public school. D was homeschooled until starting high school and there was much to learn. I was thinking about sending him some baked goods from my favorite mail order bakery. I don’t want to appear that we are sucking up but I want to do something to thank him. Suggestions?

@3scoutsmom Chocolates and gift card for local restaurant?

I think a nice note telling the GC how much you appreciate them will go a long way also.

Going back to the posts about driver’s licenses, my April 98 S just got his and my insurance went up $1200/year, and that is with a good student discount.
