My son is trying to KILL me. UCSC (one of his top choices) came out early this AM. He checked his email for me before school but won’t look at the portal till after school. (2pm) I’ve been anxious about this one and got very little sleep. Driving me NUTS!!
Looking at the UCSC board, seems acceptances are all over the map. I’ve seen kids with slightly lower stats get in… so IDK? I think this UC is certainly very Holistic. Waiting to see if they like my kid.
@klinska Great new about UMass-Amherst. It’s a great school and a lovely area.
@snoozn Congrats to your D for getting in the Honors college at Clarkson.
@curiositycat333 your S does seem to have a sadistic side to him…where does UCSC fall in his ord9er of school preference at this point? Maybe he’ll check at lunch…
@snoozn, nice going on Clarkson, but hoping RIT comes through with a few extra $$!
@93pilots and @kt1969 we can huddle in the Denison waiting room til Friday!
@curiositycat333 this is why I’ve set up a generic college gmail account for son17 to use during college process. All college stuff goes to that account, and we both have access to it, so I know the portal log ins and all that. It’s been helpful for us to do it that way.
I don’t have access to his personal email or anything, just college email account. It’s been great to keep everything organized in one place.
I am a CA resident and have got into UCR CS while Cal Poly SLO into my 2nd choice of Engineering, I want to major in CS but I am confused if I should play safe and go UCR then try to transfer to UCSD or go to Cal Poly and try to transfer to CS after first quarter. Please help with your opinion, any insight would really help me decide. Thank you in advance.
@rightcoaster we did the exact same thing for both kids - DH has access as well. No one wanted that barrage of college emails going into their personal accounts! I also know all the portal passwords and will periodically check them to be sure there are no messages. S doesn’t care, but he is pretty laid back.
Fingers crossed for your S, @curiositycat333!! Only a couple more hours - I’m impressed by his willpower, btw!!
@RightCoaster I did that for my daughter. But my son is a lot more independent and didn’t want to. Really should have just because now his regular email is spammed with a lot of college stuff and it’s a pain.
@klinska He officially doesn’t have an order. He’s going wait till he’s heard from everyone. (Today this is the last.) But I think it’s in the top 2…
He currently has 4 acceptances. One is his safety which is off the table. And I think UofO will be chosen over OSU. SO really it’s going to come down to UofO, CU Boulder, and IF he gets in UCSC.
Just got a big envelope with ‘congratulations’ on the front from Muhlenberg, so D17 is 10/10. I really don’t think I was expecting her to do quite so well! She’s at school so I didn’t open it, so no idea if she got any merit $$. She liked it when she visited with her dad [I haven’t seen it], but she hasn’t been talking about it and don’t know if she’s really considering it at this point. Still waiting on Denison [Friday] and Smith [next Friday] and then we have to sit down with all the numbers etc and see where we are.
Congrats to your D, @kt1969 ! I would be willing to bet she got merit–but of course that just makes the decision-making that much more complicated! Hang in there–just a little more than 2 weeks to go!
I’ll defer to our California mom’s here @CAtransplant and @curiositycat333 but from what I know, if you want CS your only safe bet in that scenario is UCR.
CS is incredibly competitive at both schools and may well be impossible to transfer in, if you were not admitted at all to UCSD that would seem even riskier than attempting to transfer majors at SLO.
My D is currently 8 for 10 (Kalamazoo College, College of Wooster, Central Michigan, Grand Valley, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Purdue, are some that she was accepted to) and now we wait for Denison. I read in the thread that there are supposed to be decisions on Friday. Do we know this or just guessing? I think her top two are K’zoo and MSU as of right now. We have to see what Denison says as far as merit goes.
Congrats to everyone on the acceptances. The denials are tough but it appears most are handling it well. The one denial was tough, she didn’t really care about the waitlist. I just keep pointing out what she didn’t like about the denied school. She was denied last Friday and I think she is pretty much past it at this point.
For kids I have stats on already I am “trying” to catch updates in posts as people put them up and add to the master doc as I expect it to be pretty busy with news here for the next 2 weeks.
If your student is NOT yet listed on the master doc and you’d like them to be, it means I’ve never received their initial stats so either PM me, or post here and I’ll get them added.
@endesmom At UCSC you are admitted to the university, not to the major. You are only put in a pre-major. So theoretically it’s not harder to get into UCSC for comp science than any other major. IDK we will see in a few hours.
@eandesmom I did not understand, in your opinion i should stick to UCR , I got rejected from UCSD but I know my seniors who went to UCR and the transferred to UCSD , SLO ranks higher in terms of Engineering in general and is also more practical than theoretical. Also, I got to know that at SLO the professors teach while at most UCs TA teach, the more info I get the more confused I am !
If you really want CS, my point is that UCR is your only guarantee of that major. Everything else is risky. It doesn’t mean it is not possible, it just means it is risky.
Just because you know kids that did transfer successfully to UCSD, does not mean it is necessarily a likely outcome. It doesn’t mean it isn’t either. You would really want a lot more data points to know what your chances are for that, my only thought is that an initial rejection is not a positive sign for later transference, you’d need to do really really well at UCR and UCSD would have to have space. Given how impacted that major is, in general, it just seems risky to me.
There may be data out there on transfer stats, I would try to look around for that information.
As for SLO, yes, it’s better school (in my opinion) than UCR and its engineering is top notch. We have a very very happy junior there now (not in engineering). It just depends on what you want. If your heart is set on CS and you go to SLO, you need to be ok with the fact that you may not be able to transfer into CS. You can try after first quarter but you can only try once. It does sound like they will coach you as to your chances of success so that is good.
Congrats @MrylndMom! You both must be relieved to have things finalized. My D has been accepted to some schools but is waiting to hear from 3 more schools. It will be nice when she makes a final decision. What was it about Denison that attracted your D to apply EDII?
