Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Checking in briefly to say that I got a very friendly email from Case saying that colleges all cost different things and I must be the one to decide whether Case’s price tag is worth it. This is pretty much what I expected to hear but didn’t want to lie awake wondering whether Case had been dying to add more Caucasian musicians to their ranks.

@tacocat333 LOL on “affordable unaffordable”. Ugh on the CASE response but not surprising. I got a letter from Ursinus yesterday saying they will finish the package evaluation by 4/17…and reminding me that the enrollment deadline is 5/1. Because you know, I didn’t know that.

@CoyoteMom gooD for you for declining spots. We should likely do that, just aren’t “quite” ready to on any yet though I’m not sure why. Ithaca called and tried to tell me we could appeal the package there. I don’t see the point as it would need to come down a fairly large chunk and we’ve not visited. I suppose part of me is keeping it on the list on the off random chance they offer to fly the kid out. Not that I’ve heard of them doing such a thing for anyone. LOL! S17 does have a friend appealing a package their though so if they are successful I may regret not attempting but oh well, it is what it is.

@eandesmom , I like how Ithaca is crawling back! Part of why we’re hoarding acceptances is for the swag that keeps coming. One school just emailed us to get a feel for how likely he is to enroll and for the second time I hit “thinking about it.” (This is the school that sent the candy-filled Tervis recently.) CWRU liked TacoSon enough to admit him EA but it’s not like he’s gotten a patent on some life-changing technology – which is the kind of thing the Case emails like to tell admitted families.

I had a lovely lunch with @CoyoteMom a few days ago, who reminded me that we’re not keeping spots away from other students until 5/1, which made me feel a little less guilty.

Hello, I had to get a new username because I can’t seem to log on with the name I’ve had for 7 years (Queen’s Mom). Anyway, in the final count, we have 9 accepted, 1 denied. No wait lists. She got into her number one choice, but the money is just not there. She’s leaning to number 2, but that’s over budget also, just not as much. She’s refusing “mom’s choice” which is affordable, but not what she wants. There are 2 others which are affordable, but after applying to mostly small LAC’s, she wants a university with lots of resources. We’re very happy, but very tense around here.

Thought I would stop by and say hello. I have a 2018 kiddo–just started a thread for us parents with kids with similar stats. I’m already getting nervous about the number of waitlisting you all are experiencing. Anyway, if you have any wisdom to impart, here’s the link! Thanks in advance! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1977195-parents-of-the-class-of-2018-3-0-3-4-gpa-p1.html?new=1

@go2mom there is already one going that has been up for a while, it’s located here.

@eandesmom --thanks. I wonder why it is buried! Had no idea!

@tacocat333 - ha, ha - sorry Caucasian musicians are just too common, but so glad you at least checked!

@eandesmom - ha ha. This just made me laugh, but super glad that you asked Ursinus to review the aid package - in your case, I know you had competing offers from peer institutions - so fingers crossed they come through with more, $$ - but like Tacocat, you’ll know you’ve done all you could. And since so many of us have known rolling or early action results for so long, it is indeed crazy that the schools with such late activity (late financial packages, or late accepted students days) all get to have the kids pick by May 1.

@“Queen’s Mom” /Try again 2 - yay that your D went 9 acceptances and only 1 denied - and especially glad she didn’t get sent to wait list limbo. Bummer 1: that you used an LAC strategy, and now she’s interested in a bigger university, resulting in Bummer 2: D is now more interested in higher cost options. Can you have her visit at least one of the more affordable options for accepted students day, even if it isn’t necessarily the “Mom’s choice school”? We’ve only attended one accepted students day event so far, but I do get the sense that the schools know how to market themselves to their target kids.

@go2mom - welcome both to our thread and you may find the @MotherOfDragons thread useful as well.

I also enjoyed lunch IRL with Tacocat! Indian - yum! - but more importantly the fellowship of someone else on CC who shares my obsession with all the details of this college search process! Don’t want to overload all the other people IRL, especially if they don’t have a senior looking for something other than the in-State flagship.

Just wanted to confirm that while I had no problem with CoyoteSon declining the waitlists, and withdrawing from two other schools that were furthest from meeting all of his criteria, I have insisted we refrain from releasing 2 other schools which IMHO still have various advantages compared to the five CoyoteSon has highest on his list. I am not feeling guilty - until CoyoteSon tells me definitively that “A” is the school I want to attend next year, well then, it makes sense to keep “B, C, etc” on the list until May 1, just in case he changes his mind. We all think B, C, etc have different advantages - no one school is perfect (in our case, naturally the school that seems “best” fit in every other way is by far the most expensive option) - so it makes sense to keep everything that could be viable on the table until May 1.

Yes. I’m trying to get her to go to at least one accepted student event. She declined acceptance to all but 3 schools. We will revisit all of them during spring break and we will see what happens.

Road tripping to MI this afternoon for tomorrow’s MSU visit. Wish us luck, or clarity, or something… ;

D is very likely to enroll at Western Washington. She’s currently stuck on dorm preferences. She wants a suite style bathroom, so that rules out about half the dorms. A lot of the remaining dorms are set up like motels with no interior hallway. You open your dorm room door and you’re outside. We aren’t used to dorms like this. This seems less than safe, socially inhibiting (no hallway to hang out in/not likely to leave your door open) and inconvenient to go outside for laundry and lounge/common areas. Does anyone have experience/insight with this type of dorm? If she rules out the exterior door dorms, then Buchanan Towers is pretty much the only dorm left. Buchanan seems far although not super far from the main campus. Any insight would be appreciated.

My daughter had a suite dorm with a door that opened onto a landing (with 4 suites on each landing ). Since this was the freshman village, everyone was in the same position. Safety wasn’t an issue. She met the boys across the landing, she knew kids in other buildings, she met kids in her classes.

Other daughter lived in a traditional dorm. While she was friendly with other kids in the dorm, she was not friendly with anyone on her floor. In fact, her neighbors complained a lot about the noise (daughter NOTa noisy kid, no loud music, no tv). Wasn’t that much fun to hang around so she usually went to her friends’ rooms.

I’m out of town for a long weekend that has nothing to do with colleges plus I’ve been super busy all week. Good luck and I hope everyone gets farther in their decision making by the time I hear from them.

@brindlegreyhound we will be there Saturday if you want us to check on anything. I agree Buchanan is far (but they seem nice) and it’s a pretty walk. S17 wanted the ridge originally but after living there for a week and walking the hill he’s thinking north campus now.

Well, it appears we have a … (drum roll) … decision! lol Viking son will be attending Colorado State University, majoring in Natural Resource Tourism with a minor in Business Administration. Our visit to Choose CSU Day seems to have sealed the deal. Runner-up was Colorado, Boulder (still really hard to walk away from that campus and those views…). Bunched in the pack behind runner-up CU were Virginia Tech, Furman and Appalachian State. More distant followers were Ole Miss, Berry (for track & field), South Carolina (wait list) and Clemson (bridge program). Now my checklist can morph into noting all the things we need to do to get ready for CSU !! Good luck to all in the decision-making process.

Congrats @lakeviking on your son’s decision! It must feel good to move forward in this process and to now focus on getting ready.

Congrats to you and your S, @lakeviking – so great to have a decision. I’m jealous!

Congrats to @lakeviking 's VikingSon! It must feel great to be moving forward and getting excited about freshman year!

@stlarenas, my son was accepted at Rhodes and Sewanee. We have visited both schools twice. My son is currently trying to decide between the two, and it’s tough. If Sewanee was a target for your daughter, I highly recommend she visit Rhodes. In many ways they are very similar colleges. Both have beautiful campuses. I think they often compete for the same applicants.

Good luck to the rest of you waiting on decisions still, and for those of you visiting schools on your accepted list I hope you have fun and figure it all out soon!
