Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@GABaseballMom We visited Rhodes and loved it (but she is a little worried it is too small - about the same # of students as her HS)

We never visited Sewanee. She applied on a whim but never really thought about the school once she hit submit. I haven’t forced the issue since I am not sure about the remote location. She is also more of a STEM kid so I think Rhodes may be a better fit there.

Right now I “think” Rhodes is the top (albeit the most expensive) contender on her list.

All of our decisions are in, so I’ll share. Son has 3.4 UW GPA, 1480 SAT, normal school activities, Eagle Scout, volunteer work, etc… Expect his teacher rec was pretty good. Took lots of hard classes (Calc BC, Physics C right now) but didn’t make A’s.

Well, the school I declined emailed me back and suggested that I send my other offers in. I only have one peer school, which is also local, but it’s offer is $6,500 more per year. The issue is that even if they match, it still leaves me 6 - 8K over budget (even more if you consider the 4,500 SUNY is giving him for the first year, down to 3 the rest of the years but with the possibility of more money). SO, I asked Techson17 if all other things being equal and cost was not an object, which school would he pick. He said SUNY Fredonia - so, we have a winner. I am going to email the school and thank them but decline. This way, if Techson17 decides he wants to go to school closer to home, we haven’t burned any bridges.

The day’s other big news is that he is re-thinking the gap year. I have promised him that if he wants to take a leave of absence he can but that if he goes straight through, we will help him with a car and let him have some gap time after school.

I feel relieved to have this done. H is not happy that TS17 will be so far away but he doesn’t have the money required to keep TS17 closer to home. I refuse to take out loans and, frankly, think he will be so much better off further away, though I will miss him.

I hope everyone else’s children wound up in wonderful situations.

Congrats on making that final decision, @techmom99 ! Also for keeping gap year in the conversation if it’s needed.

I’m finding that the choice conversation is really hard during this bout of severe senioritis. TacoSon is really checked out in terms of classwork; he’s doing (mostly) fine but honestly doesn’t care anymore. He’s particularly checked out over Spanish. And when I bring up the upcoming visits and core requirements of what are likely his 3 finalists, he literally glazes over. Honestly, it’s like having a conversation with a Krispy Kreme doughnut.

It makes me wonder if we need to talk about a gap year too. This is one burned out kid/doughnut.

My daughter did not study ONE SECOND for the Spanish AP exam. She knew she wouldn’t get a 4 or 5, so didn’t care what she did get (and I’m not sure she even knows). The school required that they take all AP exams, so she did, but the score was unimportant.

@twoinanddone , we discussed today how he should (uncharacteristically) prep for the IB Spanish exam just to be able to test out of foreign language wherever he chooses to go … but I’m not holding my breath! Sad that one teacher has totally tanked foreign language for him.

One of the delights of the BFA route is that the number of gen eds is greatly reduced. He will do one math class, probably the easiest he qualifies for, ASL as a foreign language and only a couple of others. Our school requires all AP students to take the tests. TS17 took AP Psych last year and got a 3, which means he gets credit at the SUNY, but would not at the private schools. That is another factor in the decision. He is taking APES and APUSGovt this year and he is working to get a 4 and hoping for the 3. That would be 2 more classes done before he goes in.

Now, to contact the disabilities office to make sure his accommodations (extended time, copies of class notes and the like) are put into place at college.

@tacocat333 - senioritis has set in here, too.

My daughter today got into GW.

So proud, as her UW GPA was around 3.4/3.5 and weighted not much higher. (3.6). She got a 29 on her ACT and maybe superscored to a 30. What really helped where her EC’s and essay. She is very passionate about everything she does and it really showed. glad this is over. 90% sure she is going to her dream school of GW.

Thanks for the input @twoinanddone and @eandesmom !

All the decisions are in so I wanted to let people know how my 3.4, 26 ACT son made out to give others hope. The 3.4 is weighted and was not reached until the middle of this year. I believe the 26 was superscored. He has no school related EC’s and only has taken 2 APs, both this year in CS. His main non-school activity is a martial art which he has practiced for years, teaches, and competes in at a national level. He has held a part-time restaurant job since last summer. He was 1-1-1 on his three reaches. Rejected at WPI, waitlisted at George Washington and accepted at RIT. He was accepted at all of his matches/safeties - Quinnipiac, Champlain, UScranton, Seattle, Washington College (MD) and SNHU. As of now he plans to study computer science. RIT is the likely college he will attend, although he really wants GWU as he has friends going there so will probably accept the wait list. He did not apply for financial aid, and received some merit aid everywhere.

@Tyberius congrats to your son…those are great results!

@techmom99 @lakeviking congrats on decisions!!!

@sdl0625 Congrats on GW!!!

@Tyberius what Seattle school was your S accepted at? Some really nice options, congrats!

@Leafyseadragon @Tyberius and @sdl0625 congrats on those results, really good choices!

@techmom99 and @lakeviking congrats on finishing the decision process!

Not a lot of decisionmaking happening in 93pilots land. S is one of the kids who applied to a lot of schools (20!) because didn’t have a clue how he would do, and had better than expected results (15-3-2). Although it is nice to have options, that was the whole point, he might be a little paralyzed by too many. I think he has eliminated 5 schools, we are down to 10. He didn’t put tons of thought into his reaches (or even some of his targets) because didn’t want to be disappointed, but now he has to. Spring break came too early here–and news too late–to schedule visits on days off, so looking at missing school days for that and worried about missing too many. Certainly not the biggest problem we could have had, not complaining, just looking at that looming May 1 deadline and wondering what will happen.

D has made her choice!

And the winner is…

cue drumroll…

Rochester Institute of Technology

They came through with the (small) additional requested merit. D is visiting now for Women in Engineering and will be there for Accepted Students day tomorrow. I think she’ll find her tribe there. :-B

Good luck to everyone still making decisions. I’m enjoying following all the stories and I wish it could be painless.

Can you guys believe @CoyoteMom and @tacocat333 got together and didn’t invite the rest of us?? I’m jealous now!

Welcome back @TryAgain2. Sounds like you’re close to a decision. I hope she will fall in love with a nice affordable school on your trip.

@MSU88CHEng, wishing you luck, clarity, all that kind of stuff!

@brindlegreyhound congrats on WWU! When will your D be sure? I agree that a dorm with doors to the outside rather than a hall is not optimal for a number of reasons. I’m pretty sure that when we visited we looked at Buchanan. It was a bit of a hike (uphill when going from dorm to campus) but the rooms were very nice.

Congrats to your S @lakeviking! I’m not sure if he was at the same Choose CSU day we went to, but it was very well done. <:-P

@Leafyseadragon, looks like your S has great options – has he narrowed down his decision any?

<:-P @techmom99 congrats to techson on SUNY Fredonia! If it makes your H feel any better, my H is unhappy that D will be far away AND we’re spending more money!

@tacocat333, sorry things are tough, but thank you for the image of talking to a glazed doughnut! I’m stealing that one.

@sdl0625, congrats on GW! <:-P

@Tyberius, those are impressive results. Sounds like he was able to make a strong impression outside the “numbers.” Of course I’ll be interested to see if he comes around to RIT!

@93pilots, sounds like your S has an embarrassment of riches. Perhaps you should buy him a magic 8-ball to assist in decision-making!

@snoozn woo hoo! Congratulations on the decision, hope Accepted Students Day goes great!!!

Hey @snoozn congrats!! Great choice by your D, I’m certain she will succeed there!
I’m going to try to take my younger son there to check RIT out this summer.
Hope she enjoys accepted students day!
Really happy for you.

Congrats @snoozn !! That is great news!!

Did someone mention senioritis?? Yea, we got that.

Awesome, @snoozn ! Seems that this place has been the front runner for awhile, so I’m super glad they came through with the extra $$ to make if financially within reach.

Jealous of all of you with decisions!

Love the avatar @snoozn! So very happy for you and your D!!!
