Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Wow! So many are in the final days. Congrats @snoozn with the extra money coming through so that the choice was clear.

We visited UNCG last Saturday and D texted me while I was in the parent session, “OMG Mom! The assistant director of Russian Studies did a Fulbright Scholarship in Croatia for a year. The director talked to me for a while and said she would be so excited to talk with me.” For those not following, D did 10 months in Croatia during her junior year through Rotary and is very nostalgic. The only thing was she really fell in love with the idea of the dorms since the honors students get their own building and they get the largest dorms. She said that they seem to really get the support they need there (which was true). We had agreed that she would stay here for a year and commute (30 minutes) and apply for merit aid and outside scholarships next year to offset the cost since the only FA was loans. We figured one year less of loans would be a plus. We still have to see. She is young and while part of me likes the idea of her staying home until she is 18, the other part did like the idea of the dorms but we couldn’t do it without the loan.

We did get a call from the Director of Admissions at Beloit. They wanted to pay for a visit but we mentioned how they gave the least aid and though it was at the top of her list, we couldn’t justify (or afford) the price tag. He urged us to fill out an appeal with competing offers of similar colleges that accepted and even to throw in the state school. Last Friday he said we would have a decision by Monday but it is now Saturday and nothing. I contacted the financial aid office and they said they would email but they were very busy with appeals. Unless they could offer free at this point, I am not sure it would be worth it and THAT is not happening. Too bad, I really loved that school and so did she but she is very excited about UNCG and so am I.

@snoonzn Congratulations on RIT and a decision! No idea when D will be sure. She says she’s indecisive because she’s a Libra and it’s all my fault.

Hey all!

I have MASSIVE updates to results doc in progress but still need to add about 14 new schools (faster to update if it’s a school on the list already).

So if you have updates that haven’t been PM’d or posted recently, bring it on!

Rejections and wait lists too, it all helps.

@brindlegreyhound that’s hysterical!!!

We are on our way to WWU right now, nasty rainy morning. Glad it’s not our firsts visit and we won’t need to hike all over campus.

And we are back!

With zero clarity. So apparently I am rambling and this is kinda long! Sorry about that lol.

Several times on the way up, and over breakfast it was “Vermont this” and “Vermont that”.

Once on campus and checked in (best swag so far…socks, string bag and a water bottle…the socks win the top prize), he saw at least 5 kids from his HS at check in. That didn’t thrill him. But it wasn’t a huge issue either.

Info session was good, apps were up this year, which meant so is the average GPA admitted and by default I assume the acceptance rate went down a tad. S mentioned knowing someone who was waitlisted. Which was sad and a bit funny at the same time. Sad as apparently this person ONLY applied to WWU. Funny in the sense that S said “I didn’t even know that was a thing”. Apparently my kid lives under a rock. We also know someone who was deferred (but admitted to the music school dependent on overall school acceptance). Hopefully the student (not a close friend) accepted the spot. The odds at least are good there about getting off, versus some other schools.

It was the only true admitted students “day” we have been to and the vibe of the info session was quite different. Not better or worse, just different. Which was good as it wasn’t really repeating stuff we didn’t know. It was large. Quite large. Makes sense as it is the largest school on his list. No clue on how many students were there but they split it into two groups for the general session and the theater we were in has about 1,000 seats in it, for just the side we were on and it was pretty darn full. Likely 60-100 folks at the info session and there were 3 offered so it wasn’t the only one of the day. Very different experience on that score from any other visit we’ve had. Not bad, just different. Very nice performing arts center though! I do wish we’d been able to see the inside of UVM’s though I do believe (know) the facilities both for music and theater are better at WWU.

The program session was ok. All faculty led and it was by a Graduate School Professor who doesn’t normally do these, it sounded like he was the 3rd backup. Which was annoying to be honest. Probably moreso to my H and I than to S but still. The grad program is small, isn’t the focus of WWU but it is known for the Environmental Grad program. This guy focused far more on the Environmental Science aspect of the program than the Studies part (which he kept calling Social Sciences, which seemed odd). Not necessarily inaccurate I guess but still unusual. We didn’t tour the actual school or hear from any students in the program (beyond those in the video). Which I expected but was still a bummer. They do have an urban planning and sustainable development option that S is very interested in that we hadn’t really been looking at as much as some of the other options, and I think would be a good fit. They did speak on that one specifically a bit which was good as it broadened the options.

I did get some very good info on outcomes and career fair type stuff, based on that alone the Policy and Urban Planning options seemed very sought after. He had a printout of all the current opportunities for a job fair he was hosting on Monday (which he seriously didn’t even mention he had the print out of though he did mention the fair, I just went to see what was on the table) so I took pictures of all the pages that had those majors lol! Apparently there is a job available in the town we live in.

The fair was originally 80 employers but had to be rescheduled due to a Feb snowstorm and so now it was only 50 which still seemed decent to me as it was specific to the Environmental College, not all of WWU. We were all amused by the mom who asked why the professor wasn’t rattling off business as the examples of places kids were getting jobs, that they were largely public sector. She was clearly not thrilled with her D’s choice of academic session to attend. Professor told her to talk to the business school about the combined degree that is available but that he really didn’t know anything about it. LOL!.

I also got some employment outcome information. Overall the session reinforced his interest on the policy and planning side of things which was good. Kids pretty excited about taking econ and stats which is also good.

After the session we walked around a bit and showed H some parts of campus since he’d never been. While we were walking it was “if I went here, I’d live here or here” or “if I went here, I’d hang out, study, etc, here”. Followed by various comparisons of the two schools. It is a solid enough program, well known regionally and possibly nationally but we aren’t sure on that score no matter what they “say”. However, it doesn’t start till junior year. That is a huge drawback at the moment in all of our minds. But we all agree that the overall “fit” factor is really pretty equal from a find his tribe/vibe standpoint, it’s about program and cost/value and whether the distance is or is not a factor now. We all tend to think that outside of the region, employment wise, UVM might give him an edge however for local internships certainly WWU would (in theory) be better. It is not a high paying field…to a degree it is a calling. But if one gives him an starting point/base salary edge early on well, that’s worth something. Both from a salary and quality of job/employer standpoint. UVM is a BS, WWU would be a BA. Does it matter? Hard to say. The outcome sheet showed the Policy students doing better than the Env Sci kids but I suspect that’s the nature of the jobs…not the BS vs BA.

The kid has no clue, he is a pair of flip flops.

In fact, I told him to wear his WWU socks, his UVM hat and go

“Heads or Tails?”

He didn’t find that funny. And no, it’s not as simple as that.

He did see his elementary school band teacher at lunch (we skipped the $15 pre-paid cafeteria option…didn’t get a choice…so really we have $45 socks lol) and went to a brew pub that H and I love there. Fabulous food! Horrible teacher who luckily didn’t recognize S. S almost quit music thanks to that guy! I don’t really want to know what S did with the insta pics he was definitely taking of him on the sly…

@eandesmom LOVE the heads or tails thing. Sounds like an informative visit but not much progress on a decision. It really is a difficult decision. Sounds like if you took him back to UVM he’d just flip that way. 28 days…

We went to a Blackhawks game Friday night and oldest son bailed due to a meet and greet with some engineers (where he got a good lead on an internship so it’s ok). Youngest invited a friend along and we talked colleges on the way there. He had nearly committed to a school 8 hours away before doing a 180 and committing to a local school and we talked about his reasons. He’s more social than my son so I asked if most of their class had picked a college yet and his response, “Yes, if not get it done already. Make up your mind.” I gave my son the “look” and was informed he’s 98% sure now. I guess that’s progress but I’d really love to hear the THIS IS IT (which I’m realizing I may never hear).

I’m a little behind here but @techmom99 Congrats on your son’s decision! <:-P Great news  I’ve been rooting for him
and I’m glad he’s chosen - is he still considering gap year or did the offer of a car get him excited to enroll this fall?!

@lakeviking Congrats on your son’s decision to Colorado State!! <:-P

@Tyberius Congratulations to your son! He has some great choices!! what is he leaning toward (besides the w/l)?

@tacocat333 I hear you on the senioritis, my daughter is having so much trouble focusing. As for a gap year, that’s a no for us, but since she’s going abroad first year, I feel like it’s a combo gap year with classes. lol. But really, she could use a break too, and although she’ll still have to work hard, I kind of feel like it will be such an exciting experience that it will feel different.

AP Exams: You may not recall but initially daughter said she wasn’t going to take any, then signed up for Physics C last minute (which I think is two exams) so that she could potentially test out and not have to retake them in college. However, she has done ZERO studying and therefore I don’t expect great results. I just can’t win.

@sdl0625 Congratulations on GW! I love that school and I’m sure she will too  Will she go back to visit one last time to seal the deal?

@mdcmom Sorry if I missed this but did your son talk to the coaches and decide between Buffalo and Binghamton?

@93pilots Wow, that was a lot of schools! Glad he narrowed it down to 10, I’m assuming you will visit some now? What do you think his top 3 favorites are?

@snoozn Oh my gosh, I’m so excited for daughter, I’ve been rooting for her too!! How exciting RIT, yea!!! Great school. We actually have a family member considering his acceptance there right now… Oh, and I’ve been jealous of coyotemom and tacocat as well, lol. so not fair!! Also funny, I didn’t notice your change in avatar until @eandesmom mentioned it. Awesome!! <:-P

@mackatarinasmom That’s pretty cool the director also did a stint in Croatia, nice bonding! Well, good luck on the final decision!

@eandesmom Great ‘visit report’, thanks for sharing. Sounds like it’s still a tough decision. Is he planning to visit UVM again? It sounds like not. Has he been able to connect with kids on social media at either school? My D is not big into social media but she keeps telling me she wishes she knew some of the kids that will be in her specific program. I keep telling her to finish her fb page and join the admitted students groups - from there I think they move to snapchat or whatever… Also, I don’t remember, but were they close in price?

Thanks for the admitted student day report @eandesmom ! We visited twice last year and I couldn’t justify the cost of another trip at this point.

@smakl70 it was a good day and worth going though I’m not sure his stated reasons for it being good are ours. He was happy to spend a little more time in Bellingham itself, he really hadn’t been able to explore at all at his other two visits. He may actually like Bellingham a bit more than Burlington so that was interesting.

@Fishnlines29 no, no more visits. Far too expensive. He has zero interest in the social media aspect though he will do it once he decides. If he chooses WWU he will know kids there and knows enough to have zero concerns. He’s a very adaptable kid so not really worried about UVM either. He does keep circling back to the fact that UVM starts out the program day one. The guides there really talked up the program as a family and that small school (within a smaller uni already) is definitely one of the the key factors making this very hard.

@brindlegreyhound I completely understand! It was very grey and soggy in the am anyway lol.

@eandesmom Makes sense to me, I guess he just has to mull it over or flip that coin!!

@Fishnlines29 well there are financial aspects he has to weigh, as well as distance. Really not at all sure which way he will go, I feel like I can see smoke coming out of his ears! In fact he did a AARRRGH moment yesterday that was funny, not funny if you know what I mean.

@eandesmom Yes, that made me laugh, I know exactly what you mean! Well, you have some time yet…

@Fishnlines29 I couldn’t quite convey the hand motion that accompanied the ARRGHH… but picture shaking hands on both sides of the head like a crazy person. LOL!

@eandesmom funny how we all started out hoping our kids would have at least one good option. Now they all seem to have several and can’t make up their minds. It’s a great position to be in, even if it does require some nail biting.

Son received a postcard from the student he overnighted with. In it he gave 1 piece of advice, “Don’t stress about picking a school. There’s not just one perfect school, there are several that you can be successful at.” He and my son had discussed his final 2 options (the student lived near the other choice). It doesn’t make the choosing easier but I think hearing it from someone that isn’t a parent helped my son realize there could be truth to the words.

@snoozn Fantastic result! Love the updated image to reflect her choice.

@eandesmom Another data point, we spoke at length with a student at WWU’s lakefront inholding and he was not happy about delays to graduate due to not getting the classes he needed. He was pursuing some impacted major - maybe CS or some kind of engineering? Don’t know how much this matters but here it is. Bottom line, two great choices - I’m sure he’d fit at both.

@Fishnlines29 thanks for asking!!! we are going back for admitted students day on the 21st. bringing checkbook with me

@eandesmom hopefully a decision soon. Good that S is adaptable to where-ever he is.

@mamaedefamilia oh very interesting on the delays. As it’s in state, if he’s going to have delays there are definitely worse places. I am hoping that’s not the case as he will walk in with a full quarter plus of credits but it’s certainly possible. We didn’t hear mention of that in his area but his friend’s older brother is going to go an extra 2 I think due to a double major and a minor combined with the transfer from Layfayette. So his parents might end up saving that much over 4 at Laf!
