Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Using food as a lure, I managed to force a quick conversation about colleges with TacoSon after his work shift. At his present level of stress and exhaustion, it has been impossible to broach the topic for the last few weeks.

I confirmed that he has no problems tossing out the expensive “name” schools (Case, F&M, Dickinson), which is as good a reason as any not to go into debt over them. Pitt is on the bubble as the “affordable unaffordable,” but not overly compelling. We may try to visit but won’t lose sleep over it if we don’t. COA is roughly twice of the state schools vs. 3x.

Of the three frontrunners, one, Randolph-Macon, is a distant third. His stats are considerably above the average there, but the intimate atmosphere would be a plus. He is conscious that even with merit the price is slightly above his other options and doesn’t think he loves it enough make the extra cost worthwhile. He is signed up for a shadow day during spring break, but I’m rethinking that, as I honestly don’t think being a captive audience all day is going to be a great selling point. We may try to arrange a shorter visit.

So he’s really down to University of Mary Washington, which from the start has always felt like a great fit, and is clearly the school that loves him, and George Mason University, which is local to us, but that may not be a negative in his view. The two are very different and have their pros and cons. He’ll do the UMW Accepted Students event next week, and we’ll spend a day or two in the area to get a feel for life off campus. GMU is nearby enough that we can fit in a final visit in an hour or two.

It feels strange, and a little bit of a letdown, to come full circle and have 2/3 of the choices as schools that we visited very early in this process. I’m so proud of his truly impressive list of acceptances (and wait lists – remember, we see wait lists as 1/2 acceptances!). He’s proof that a 3.6ish GPA isn’t a liability, though reports of merit bringing LACs to state tuition levels have been highly exaggerated IMO. And even if cost weren’t an issue, I just don’t know if any of the privates would have been his perfect fit after all.

So where does this leave us? Still undecided, with a spring break wide open since college visits will cover just one day (I’d been putting the week aside for college visits, but they don’t seem to be needed for the known quantities and he was WL at the places I would have liked to check out) . Anyone know of a great last-minute vacation site??

@eandesmom -
Wow - fantastic job on maintaining and formatting this list. It will definitely live on in cc usefulness for years! Thanks! ^:)^

I was off on a spring break trip, and have been buried at work since return (with no end in sight!). Congrats to those with good news, and big hugs to those dealing with disappointing news. @eandesmom --Wow! Great job!

With all decisions in, S17 is maybe closer to narrowing options, but he definitely won’t commit. Big decision point is going with the the private school, or the big publics. My belief is that S17 is leaning towards the private–but he hasn’t visited many of the big publics that he is also considering. Plan to squeeze in 2 of the top of the list publics this month. Wondering if S17 will be able to make his own path in the big publics, or if he’ll get lost in the shuffle. He is reserved by nature, and not one to reach out to professors, etc. Hopefully that will change, and soon.

Recent frustration–CU Boulder says S17 wasn’t considered for any of their automatic consideration scholarships because their records show his application was 2 days late. But it wasn’t. :(( We have the emails confirming from Common App the timely submittal of the applications (did I say that S17 is a last minute kind of guy?). CU Boulder’s email came 2 days later, which is the date they are referencing. Tried to call them today, but they are closed for spring break. I know CU Boulder doesn’t give OOS students much money, but every little bit helps! S17 is planning to go to the admitted students day there on Saturday.

@eandesmom - I’ve been without cell phone service since Friday, glad to be back. I can see there are lots of congrats I need to catch up - but going through most recent posts first- I groaned aloud when I saw WWU visit provided no clarity - I am just projecting here but I bet UVM’S amazing Enviro Sci breadth but hefty and over budget price tag that may provide a better ROI is tempting, but hard to choose over WWU, lowest price tag, also good Enviro majors, more certain ROI if E1 wants to ultimately get jobs on West Coast.

   Ugh - maybe it's time to see if E1 can make his own side by side chart with just a few key to him items for comparison? CoyoteSon did this with a white board once we narrowed down his high school choices to three schools. Then-8th-grader CoyoteSon had about 5 factors (class size, overall school size, lunch options, if the school had an on-site school dog (2 of the 3 did!), and can't remember the other one). He then just ranked as a "plus" or a "minus". Of course, the three schools were tied for number of "+" signs, though those were all in different categories. CoyoteSon came up with a tie breaker (one school had comfy couch area for students), though the point was that he was able to come up with one more factor that revealed his preference, but only after acknowledging "on the board" his own assessment of each school's strengths.

Anyway, despite the massive parent-driven spreadsheet, maybe a simple chart with just a few key variables (sure, COA, or maybe instead, how much summer $$ has to be earned by E1; Strength of Enviro program; appeal of the theater facility; lunch and/or dorm options; quality of life for ski/etc)? Seriously - he might like that better than socks vs hat (very funny) coin flip!

Does that mean Ursinus is out? Gaaah - I feel your pain – my only other suggestion - put a moratorium on any college discussion for a week? Then see if after the break he can make the chart, and hopefully a decision?

Will get back to TacoCat and rest of the congrats/welcomes tomorrow.

Except: Congrats to @snoozn's D- I saw the RIT tiger logo right away!

Can I join you? I wish I had found College Confidential and this thread a LONG time ago :).

@snoozn Wonderful new about the decision. I’m glad the visit was very helpful. I’m hoping my son’s visit this weekend will be as helpful.

Congrats @techson to making a decision.

@lakevicking Great news about Colorado State. I couldn’t get my son to apply there. But his is in at Boulder and will be visiting this coming weekend.

I’m envious of all your decisions. My son is still so far away from a decision. He still doesn’t really have a preference. But he is on spring break, so I plan to bribe him with a lunch out and see if I can talk with him about some pro’s and con’s. But mostly he is waiting for his trip to Boulder this coming weekend. And then hopefully we will hear. There have been so many posts since I left last week. My husband & I a fun and relaxing trip with my in-laws. r Saw my nephew (who is also a senior) who made his decision.

This is a really interesting list. It’s fascinating at what a wide range of schools all our kids applied and how many these kids got accepted at.

@93pilots I just noticed the acceptance to Reed in this list. I had decided Reed was too much of a reach and we didn’t even go visit. But DS’s GPA & SAT are in a similar range to your son’s. But Naviance from my school showed it a HUGE reach. Now I’m going to kick myself a bit by not having him even look. It was a school I’d always regretting not applying to. Hopefully this will encourage someone else to check it out.

@rbc1999 Sure… We are nearing the end of the journey. But the more the merrier. Where has your son or daughter been accepted at?

@endesmom I forgot to have you add… My son got $2K first year only merit from UofO, and $3K a year from Oregon State. Plus I guess since other’s have mentioned it he made commended NM, although I think he only mentioned this to the UC’s.

@curiositycat333 , thanks :).

My daughter’s main requirement for selecting a college was that it had to be BIG. We live less than 20 minutes from the University of Wisconsin and I think that has colored her view of smaller schools. She wants to become a Physical Therapist (a 7-year doctoral degree (!)) and plans to study Kinesiology/Exercise Science for her undergrad. She gets good grades, but failed to understand the importance of getting a good ACT score and did not study property for it. Her best friends scored well with no sweat/no prep made her feel that she should be able to do the same. She was wrong and her low-average ACT score has been a real roadblock to being accepted at her #1 school and for receiving merit scholarships at schools where she has been admitted.

Her #1 school is the University of Wisconsin, #2 is Iowa State, #3 is probably University of Minnesota. Kansas and Iowa are both out because of COS. We will be visiting Iowa State this weekend and she may also visit IUPUI this week with a friend.

Here are the schools she applied to. So far, 5 acceptances and 2 waitlists. I hope that the format is good for @eandesmom
