Ugh, DD19 has a severe strain in her leg. On the bright side, she was debating between playing volleyball in the fall or track in the spring (she didn’t really want to do both). Now the decision is made for her because she has to be off her feet for a few weeks and won’t be able to try out for volleyball. Looks like she will be on the track team, probably also running cross-country, once she is healed. At least she’ll get her P.E. credit without having to take the P.E. class.
@gusmahler That’s great that she gets PE credit! No such thing at our school for sophomores. Have to be a junior or a senior on varsity and then you can only miss gym during your season. Even freshman or sophomores that make a varsity sport have to take gym.
It’s worse here in NY because everyone has to take PE all four years of high school. No sports exemptions and no summer class to take it instead. It really stinks, especially for the non sporty kids who have to take it alongside the sporty kids.
Yes NY’s PE requirement is awful @mom2twogirls And if you’re injured you still have to participate in some way for credit. And walking around the gym gets boring real fast-says the girl who had to do it from October to June because of medical issues
I know some schools give PE credit for marching band. Wish that was the case with ours. No worries though, S19 got his requirement done last year. (Just one semester required–those NY requirements are tough @mom2twogirls!) I know some kids have done online courses to meet health or PE requirements.
Schedules aren’t given out here til the first day. Which I don’t like. Pretty stressful for some. Especially for the sophomores who are dealing with a new building, or all the kids who inevitably have something wrong with their schedules. I’ve known parents whose child was in the wrong class for weeks before it got fixed, then they were that far behind in the class they were supposed to be in. I know there must be some reason why it’s done that way, I just can’t imagine what it is. So, fingers crossed we have no issues.
No online PE here either. At least there’s no homework!
We aren’t getting schedules until about a week before school starts. I wish it was earlier. It would be nice for my kids to be able to visualize it sooner.
Wow, that PE requirement is stinky in every way, @readingclaygirl and @mom2twogirls. Time to take a look at who determines your state curricular requirements. 1.5 years for S19; he finished 1 year as a freshman and will probably take a semester weight training course as a senior, as S13 did. He gets his schedule at registration in a few days.
It’s the lovely Board of Regents who I really don’t like but am going to have to deal with forever because I’m going to teach. @EastGrad
Unless you move out-of-state, RCG.
True @EastGrad But I really like where I live and being near my family is a top priority
Yes, your family sounds terrific. Lots of time, anyway.
@mom23travelers - YES. When they have a girlfriend… Unfortunately when they don’t I have to nag about brushing teeth.
@MichiganGeorgia I don’t think that’s happening anytime soon. He is a classic computer geek. On the other hand he could surprise me.
There’s more and more female computer geeks @mom23travelers . You never know .
I mean, my D19 has already figured out how to hack into her school’s private area for teachers’ stored files, for one, so…
Fair enough. I’m pretty sure his closest friend, who is a girl, has a crush on him but he is either clueless or intentionally not taking it to the next level. In any case it certainly hasn’t effected hygenie levels.
In other news, I finally gave the boy an ultimatum on his summer homework and dang if he didn’t leave it until the very last minute and then proceeded to do an absolutely first rate job with absolutely no help on his literary symbolism double entry journal that I thought would be hard for him.
This is what drives me crazy. He got a ton of B’s last year that I know could have been A’s with a bare minimum of effort. But it is his choice.
@mom23travelers I feel your pain! Summer homework has not even been started here. He’s still got a month but ugh.
@mom23travelers - Have you had him do any volunteer work that involves food preparation? The reason I ask is that I have told DS19 that if he doesn’t get A’s he could end up working in fast food for the rest of his life. They don’t hire 15 year olds around here but I did have him volunteer at charity where he had to help assemble meals. Lots of repetitive work scooping food. I think it may have been a reality check for him.
@mom23travelers he might just not be ready for romantic drama and entanglements. My d19 has zero interest in anything romantic whatsoever. She almost completely avoids boys completely just so she doesn’t have to deal with it. It’s so the opposite of me from when I was that age, but I’m also very grateful. I remember constant drama caused by boyfriends and girlfriends in high school. I will be glad if we can happily postpone that for a few more years.
