I was going to school in MN when the switch from quarters to semesters happened. I don’t have a strong preference for one over the other, but switching in the middle was a cluster.
@mom2jgd Not what I’ve read on CC as far as internships, which often go to those who can start earlier regardless of whether the summer is the same length or not (which I would debate as well). My kid has mentioned the same thing regarding her close friends who were on quarters and struggled to find spots.
UChicago announced today modifications to their quarter system that includes ending the spring quarter by the end of May starting in 2021 so their students can start summer internships earlier. They also added a new 3 week Sept term and a full week off for Thanksgiving so their students, if they choose, don’t have to wait until Oct for classes to start.
This happened to my S09. He was attending Ohio State when they made the switch. The biggest issue was graduation requirements changed, which was a huge hassle. He didn’t have trouble getting an internship when on quarters, though.
D20 will attend a college with semesters, but thinks she’d prefer quarters because she feels she does better focusing on fewer classes at a time.
As the original person who brought up a hesitation re: Quarters at University of Denver, I SOOOOO appreciate everyone weighing in on this issue. DU is typically done the second week of June so I’m not really concerned about internships. Plus, my older son attends college in a major city and his best internships have happened during the school year—something that is more of an option while going to school in/near a major city. I was more concerned about the pace of learning during quarters. Yes it will be less classes but the pace will be a quick 10 weeks versus a 15 week semester. While I think my son can handle the pace, it will be an adjustment. Things to think about…(although I will think about it waaaay more than my son I’m sure).
Yay! Finally found THE prom dress today. That is all.
@amsunshine That’s great. May I ask how much it was and where you found it. WE are having a hard time as DD has very specific requirements.
We found it at Windsor, after looking at tons of dresses, and ordering a few and returning them because they didn’t fit correctly or just weren’t right. The dress was $109, which is more than what I’ve spent in the past, but we knew it was the right one when she put it on and it’s her senior year, so I was willing to pay a little more for THE ONE. When she came out of the dressing room, there was a mom and her daughter next to us that gasped along with me. She looked like Cinderella. I think I’ve just been lucky in past years finding really low priced pretty dresses. (As an aside, we also found a dress for D21 when we were at the store trying on dresses for D20, and hers was even more – $139. I’ve never spent this much on prom dresses in the past. But I’m a softie this year, I guess…lol).
@amsunshine . Lucky you. Everything we have seen is over $250.00. It is just crazy.
We have been very lucky in the prom dress shopping. Last year I found D20 a stunning Sherri Hill on clearance at Prom Girl in December for $60 (down from $570). This year she found a gown at Dillard’s on clearance for $40 (originally $390) that was missing some beads. For another $10 in matching beads (plus the leg work to find them) and several hours watching Netflix while replacing them, she has a stunning gown for under $50.
My D18 bought her very special senior prom dress from a friend. Friend wore it to junior prom at a different school. We paid 1/4 the retail price for a stunning dress worn for a few hours by a good friend.
We have a dress as well - $98. Yay!
Maybe Promgirl is worth the trip. What was your experience there. How is the place ?
@holychild We found her dress online (not at the store). The policy was final sale on clearance but I assumed with a new Sherri Hill that if it did not fit or she hated it that I could easily recover what I spent. Luckily it fit perfectly (no alterations needed) and was stunning!
Thoughts on going to the prom vs accepted student day? He missed HC for an interview and was voted HC King…he says he is fine missing prom but I wonder if he will regret it…
I’m glad I have a kid that has zero interest in prom.
@CUsucceed Is he still deciding between schools? Unless a scholarship is on the line or he really cannot decide about attending the school, I would skip admitted student day and go to the prom. He will have plenty of time at college to make friends and find his way around but only one senior prom.
So jealous of all the great prom dress deals! We paid way too much for D20’s but it really is a great dress. ? Due to the size of her school they only go as Seniors so people tend to go all out. She plans to join a sorority so I told her she now has a formal dress for that too!
Anyone still looking for prom dresses, Lord and Taylor is having a great sale. It ends tonight. I ordered two dresses in multiple sizes. One of our favorites went down close to two hundred dollars but sadly they sold out of her size and they don’t price match. I guess that one was not meant to be. Lulus also has a great selection and the prices are amazing.
My daughter wasn’t even shopping for a dress for prom (yet) but came home yesterday with one. I guess you find the best ones when you’re not looking? $180 at Macy’s.
