So we finally got the issue with Naviance/Common App resolved and now DD is ready to submit her first application. I don’t know who’s more nervous, us or her.
Her first EA deadline in November 1, with St. Mary’s College of MD. We visited in September and it jumped to near the top of her list. She likes the chill vibe of a not-super competitive school, the campus is nice and it’s only a two hour ride away (we’re in Northern Virginia). And they have a great Biology department and vet school advising/placement.
One requirement on our visit was to stop off at the barn where the equestrian team rides. DD was very impressed with the layout and the general order of the place (her current barn is disordered and chaotic, by comparison!).
She’s also applying EA to some of our in-state schools: VTech, Mary Washington, Christopher Newport and William and Mary (RD, as W&M doesn’t have EA). Also one other out-of-state public: Miami U (OH). She likes that their equestrian center in on campus :-).
Privates she’s considering: Cornell is her super reach school, but she’s interested in their animal science program; also Lafayette, Bucknell and Gettysburg, although these might be priced out of contention. Allegheny College is another private she’s considering that might be more affordable.
Not sure if you had a chance to look, but Randolph-Macon has a phenomenal barn, plus it’s a stones throw from campus. In any event, congrats and good luck!

@Muad_dib My mom lives about 3 mins from St Mary’s campus! It’s beautiful!!
UGH! We are having the same recommender issue I asked about awhile back. D21 has a dual enrollment professor who has written her a letter of recommendation. The EA deadline for some of her apps is less than a week away and her GC still has not facilitated the upload of his letter to Naviance/Common App.
We determined he has to be added as a “teacher” in Naviance/Common App. After all, he is one of her teachers. We cannot add him as an “other recommender” because he doesn’t fit into that category, but not only that, none of the schools to which she is applying accept “other” recommenders anyway. So even if we did add him that way, it would be completely useless because none of her schools would ever see the letter.
Her GC can’t seem to figure out how to fix the problem, and Naviance does not talk to students/parents, so at this point, it appears we will never be able to rectify this situation. I tried calling Naviance to see if there was any way I could at least try to get some kind of information to pass on to the GC to help, but they hung up on me before I could even try to explain fully what was going on.
I’m at my wit’s end! Does anyone have any suggestions?
@amsunshine, is it that the GC hasn’t made time to do it yet, or because the GC is having difficulty uploading it?
If you can’t resolve it, maybe ask an admissions officer of the EA school for advice? Some schools don’t require all outside materials to be submitted by the CA due date…one of my D’s is that way, even though the y would need materials soon after.
Would you be willing to ask the AO if I the letter could be sent another way…directly from the teacher by courier or electronically some other way…or maybe that isn’t allowed?
I honestly don’t know what’s going on. The teacher has uploaded the letter to Naviance but the GC doesn’t see it. There must be some interim step that she hasn’t fully instructed him about or that she hasn’t taken herself.
I definitely may resort to having his letter mailed directly. That’s a good idea to contact the AO. I will do that.
@amsunshine - I think the issue was she entered the wrong email address for her teacher into Common App (not sure she was supposed to enter anything at all) and when she merged it with Naviance, it wouldn’t let her change it. I think she sent quite a few emails to get this resolved, so when we tried the teacher recommendation in Naviance, it worked.
Well, my kid who never has a sense of urgency finally submitted his ED to Brown. He has a shot at 6.57% admission rate but it’s like 100x super reach. He has solid grades, extras, 36 ACT but I’m not sure if he has a shot because he’s an Asian male. He applied to PLME which I think he has a slimmer chance since his medical exposure is working at the senior center in our local hospital. In a way, it was good to wait because yesterday he got in the mail the National Merit Commended Student recognition, so that was nice to add. His only other national exam was top score for AMC12 at school. Likely would’ve gone to national but COVID.
His counselor got all the content in that she needed to and she was awesome. However, he’s sending a request to his teachers for letters of reco since none have started. He requested a month ago. Making me super nervous.
This weekend we switch to UC essays. He wrote them. He has to polish them now. He is going to submit the UC application and then go back to the other reach schools. A few Ivies and USC.
@MommaLue your S sounds amazing! Congrats to him for getting that done. It’s a smart year to apply ED for those feeling comfortable with that. I’m encouraging S to get his UC submitted early in case that helps at all. Hopefully essays will be revised this weekend.
@JESmom Not sure if someone already replied, but UDel asks for essays if you go TO. When my son applied back in 2017, both the ACT (with writing) AND those supplemental essays were required! My how times have changed.
How about Cal State Chico? My sister’s a nurse and that’s where she did her BSN. She loved it there. Probably not merit but more affordable to start with.
All of S21’s apps are submitted! Let the waiting games commence!
Our school district has an education foundation that gives out a multitude of scholarships…some are just an application, some require an essay. The apps open up Nov 2 and close Jan 7. S21 is home from school today, it’s PSAT day for the juniors so seniors didn’t have to show for 1st & 2nd periods and his 3rd & 4th teachers said they’re just going to be showing movies today so stay at home it is! He’ll just go for after school band rehearsal. I told him this would be the perfect time to start reviewing the scholarship app and decide which ones he’s applying for (different criteria) and he gave me the most pained look and let out an exasperated groan like I just punched him or something.
I guess that was a no? Ok, can you at least put the trash and recycling bins out since that is your regular chore…I got an affirmative mumble out of him. He then informed me he’s going to IHOP with his boys to “decompress”.
@havenoidea Thank you for the confirmation, D21 did not send official scores. As for University of Richmond, the portal information came less than 48 hours after application was submitted and the admissions person sent a note verifying that test scores were received on the same day. The only thing outstanding in the portal would be first quarter grades when they are available. I have to hope that schools will give kids the benefit of the doubt when it comes to supporting documents. Good luck to all trying to beat early deadlines.
Ugh, ugh! D made one typo/spelling mistake on her ED supplemental essay (a silent s at the end of a word) even though she used spell-check and we both proofread over and over. It’s also a misspelling that normally jumps out at me from a mile away whenever it occurs so I don’t know how it escaped me.
I did a search here on spelling mistakes and the consensus seems to be that one typo alone won’t usually sink an app but it doesn’t help settle the anxiety! My instinct wants to have her acknowledge it by emailing the AO but my better sense tells me she shouldn’t annoy a busy person with such a trivial matter.
