Parents of the HS Class of 2023 (Part 2)

Sounds like someone needs to get their act together and form a “Watching the Watching the Squirrel Watchers Club”!

My D23 joined many clubs including one that required an application (consulting). I was also somewhat skeptical of this gatekeeping also- but once you started, the new students are partnered with more experienced club members and they all split into a group of managable size, and each group were assigned a company to work with. It sort of seemed to me that the number of partnership/project/comany was the limiting factor for limiting the number of incoming students since the partnership with the company was a predetermined number.
This is also just one club out of many- every other organization she joined were totally open (club sport, intermural sport league(that she had never tried and I would have never thought she would join), gardening club, voter registration committee, an affinity club that is purely social, and a data science boot camp).
I think she was denied by a diffrent club, and my older two students were both denied from a few as well.
Another thought: one of my older student S18 was on a selection committee for this one club (it hosts international conference abroad) and he did have a certain quota since you can only need certain number of people for specific positions (for example, he was running graphic design devision and you really only need a few people, like 2-3 at most, with the amount of project they had). I do think there is a certain exclusivity/gatekeeping that goes on with club recruiting, but i think it’s a bit more complicated at some situations.

Oh! Thanks for sharing. I agree sometimes hype may not mean much. It’s just human expectations to know why? I understand we don’t get to know a lot of times.

That’s funny

Who knows! It too shall pass! Just like all heartaches we undergo big and small it too will pass. Just hard for parents to understand and accept how competitive everything is and why our poor smart and hardworking kid( from our perspective) is facing so many closed doors.
She did some hackathon this weekend and sounded happy bragging about how their team had a working app or something

D23 got herself a job. It is in her dorm manning the front desk. I guess she was finding herself with some extra time and needing of some funds. We call those homework jobs. Sitting at a desk and being able to spend some of the time doing homework while being paid. D19 did that at the Student Union Info Desk and D23 used to do it at the HS fitness center that was partially open to the public.

Good job and beats washing dishes in the dining halls.

Twin 1 has a job on campus too now! He’s a Student Ambassador for the College of Engineering! For now he’s mostly taking phone calls and doing office tasks but once his training is complete he will be giving tours and working events. He’s LOVING it and it’s giving him so much exposure to upper classmen, TA’s, Professors and the Dean. He works about 10 hours a week.

That’s great! S23 also got a campus ambassador job. He has been thrilled to help with the welcome center desk and events, and looks forward to giving tours too. It’s interesting to hear about how much training they get before they are allowed to lead tours.

Those are the best! When I was in grad school at NYU I babysat for a family in SOHO with a 9 month old baby. They had me come at 7pm every Saturday night and she was already in bed asleep when I arrived and was sleeping through the night. They would go out and pay me a pretty penny to sit in their gorgeous loft apartment, do my homework and eat their food . I did this job every Saturday night from 7pm-11 pm and never once saw that baby :joy: Easiest job ever!

They live streamed a little performance from my sons opera workshop group last night. Love seeing him!

Plot twist: There was no baby, you were actually unwittingly a character in a Sherlock Holmes short story.

I totally said that to my friend - what if there is no actual baby. I finally snuck into her room to make sure

OOh I love scary stuff- this looks creepy. Will have to watch.

This is what it reminded me of, too! Scary creepy show—I couldn’t finish it

CA Freeways are free while you need to pay for driving on NJ Turnpike. Maybe the money they collect is used for facitlities like Rest stops etc.

The house they use (live in) is about 3 blocks from my house and the park they use is 1/2 block away.

I went to Shyamalan’s party a few years ago without a clue how he looked. I noticed a handsome guy dressed up as Achilles and had fun! Only later that I found out it was him! Though I had heard about him so much I never bothered to look at his pic ever! That was the best thing! I always believe even if a Messi or Kelsey ( In the event their Jets malfunctioned and they were down graded to basic economy:rofl:) ever sitting next to me I would be clueless
I usually know folks in movie industry and somehow I never saw any pics of him but that worked out well😁

Again going back to topic of college and our kids in college, my D was pleased after winning a Hackathon! She said now I will have some stuff to put in my resume! I asked her , why she is worried? She just started . She says it matters for internships. I held back and did not comment who cares! Seriously all this hyper competition is too much.
