Parents of the HS Class of 2024

Thanks to all those who mentioned SRAR. I was not aware of this. Sigh another thing to track and complete.

It didnā€™t hurt my son! I would include Commended Scholar for sure.

Posted this on the Yale REA but wondering if parents whose kids are already knee-deep in the common app can share some insights. Itā€™s been a while for me

Hi everyone. Question on the common app letters of reco. In the common app and under Yale, it allows for a counselor and two teachers. My kiddo would like to add a third one (our Assemblymember for whom she interned). She went to invite other recommender (thereā€™s a widget that exists) but looks like she canā€™t add additional recommenders. User error or is it a strict Yale thing. My S21 had three teachers set up when he applied back then and donā€™t recall if each college had a different max number. Thx!

This is our first time going through the college application process. A few questions ā€“

  1. Are you allowed to switch from EA to RD? This question is specific to Georgetown. My son indicated that he was ready to apply EA when he created the account (a blunder, unfortunately). He received an invitation to set up the alumni interview recently but he is not ready to submit the application by Early Action round anymore. Any advice on how to handle this situation?

  2. Are you allowed to cancel ACT score? If so, do we no longer need to submit the score or indicate that the test was taken on the applications?

Appreciate any help!

  1. If your son hasnā€™t submitted the app then he has the right to submit RD.
  2. If there is an ACT score he doesnā€™t like, he doesnā€™t have to document on the app. If he had the ACT people sent the score to the college, I would check with ACT on his options. I told my D24 not to send to any colleges since you only need to send once admitted and accepted.

Thatā€™s a good idea. Will approach her with this when she is in a ā€œbetter moodā€ hahahaā€¦and wants to talk about college appsā€¦hahahahaā€¦the struggle is real! But seriously, thanks for the idea, will bring it up (delicately, without telling her what to do, or making too many suggestions, or talking too much about collegesā€¦ !)
She now acts like she wants to ED mostly to get this process over withā€¦I donā€™t think that is a good reason to ED, but then who knows what the quality of her other apps will be if she is already burned out.

When will it be May 1 ?

Not sure how you cancel the EA - if you canā€™t figure it out, call Georgetown. I donā€™t think it is a big deal to change it. In terms of scores, all scores from all tests taken are required for Georgetown. At least that is what weā€™ve been told.

Pretty sure each college has different max number. It looks like Yale wants 2 teachers and a counselor; it allows (but does not encourage) a supplemental recommendation, but you choose to submit, it looks like it has to be mailed in.

Supplementary materials - extra recommendations

The vast majority of successful applicants submit only required letters of recommendation. If you feel the need to submit extra information, you may ask one additional recommender to write on your behalf.

Please ask the person writing a supplementary letter of recommendation to send their letter via to the admissions office via postal mail (PO Box 208234 New Haven, CT 06520) or use the document upload tool available via the counselor information page. Please ask the person writing the letter to include the following in the document: your full, legal name as it appears in your application, the name and location of the school you currently attend, and your date of birth.

Looks like SUNY schools just announced another free application week, starts on Oct 16! Glad that I didnā€™t have S send through his application already. Will add a second campus to see if there is great merit/honors college as a second back up.

She can EA and still get the process over with. That way she isnā€™t committed via ED.

Do you know if it will be free through the common app, or only through the state university application portal? I think last year it was only free if you used the state application portal, but I think it might be worth it to us to not have to deal with a second system. :grimacing:

Looks like through the common app. https://www.suny.edu/attend/apply-to-suny/#:~:text=The%20free%20application%20offer%20only,before%20or%20after%20those%20dates.

Oh I get it. I am secretly wishing my daughter had a school she felt strongly enough about to ED ā€¦ also just to get it over with. Sheā€™s stressed; it would be great to have that early acceptance and done. (But, no clear fav so looks like it wonā€™t happen.)

Yeah, my two cents is in the right circumstances, EDing in order to try to end the whole process early is actually a really good reason. Senior years are supposed to be awesome! Trying to limit the cost of the college application process to your senior year is totally rational to me.

But as usual, the right circumstances are fairly strict. You and your family have to be comfortable with what the ED school will cost without merit, and without being able to compare offers. It should also be your favorite school, or at least tied for your favorite, such that you will have no ā€œwhat if?ā€ sorts of regrets.

But if all that lines up for you and your family and you can be on to just enjoying senior year early? Great!

I cannot stress enough what a relief ED was to our family and to my daughter in particular. But the stars did align for us - she had a very clear favorite (with good back ups but clear and away her favorite), that was accessible academically (not a sure deal as itā€™s a school thatā€™s a reach for everyone, but no single digit acceptance rate), the school clearly favored early decision making it even more of a match, and it was affordable for us with heed-based aid. Probably could have shopped around and gotten cheaper but it was within the budget parameters set and we didnā€™t force the cheaper options. No regrets at all two years later.

We cannot afford to ED, so D24 will apply EA to her schools. There are only 4 (with our residential CC as her true safety, as CC is free no matter what for her grad year) and their EA dates are staggered which is nice, 11/1, 11/15 (x2), 12/15. Because of CIC/Tuition Exchange, we really wonā€™t have an answer until spring, though, and sheā€™s kind of a wonky applicant with a lopsided transcript, soā€¦ who knows where she will end up! But her worst-case scenario is still a great one where she gets to Go Away for college, live in a dorm, be in/near more of a city (and a trader joeā€™s ha) and work towards her ultimate goal (there is a 2+2 program that leads to art education at one of the 4 year schools she is also applying to) with only R&B to pay for.

I think D24ā€™s main essay is done! I like it. I think it shows her style of writing and tells a nice story about her. This lets her apply to 3 more now and be one step closer to the last 3. I am helping her track what needs to be done still and sheā€™s not a fan of things that pop up as she finishes other things. She is accept to both UAH and Bama and now has honors and other essays for them. Lol.

1 of my coworkers asked me yesterday if D24 knows yet where sheā€™ll be going to college. :joy: For Peteā€™s sake, the application cycle just STARTED!
