D24 has submitted her REA app. One down.
My S24 has submitted his REA too.
Is this something done on a case by case basis? I am trying to figure out if D24âs fall trimester grades (term ends before Thanksgiving) will be submitted to her ED school by her counselor. The schoolâs website says âWe require your official transcript(s) through the end of your junior year and will eventually require your Mid-Year Report - first semester or trimester of your senior year - and Final Report grades.â Iâm trying to discern what âeventuallyâ means, as in will they be requested and sent as part of the application or will the grades for the whole year just be sent at the end of the school year if indeed she is admitted? I am hesitant to ask my daughter (she wonât know the answer) and I donât think it warrants reaching out to her college counselor, who I assume is quite busy right now.
I donât know about every college, but the examples I have heard sound pretty case by case. Like, someone is going into committee, they might want to see the first set of grades, they might not. If they do, they call up the counselor and ask for them.
good to know, thanks!
And so it has come to pass (trick-or-treaters + red pen)
âŠexcept for the part about it being a final review. We are not there yet; only on a third draft of the supplements.
I hope I remember this: itâs getting late, and my teens just decided to trick or treat for a few minutes, ran around the house looking for some sort of costume to put on, and off they went
I just went into my guidance counselor account on the Common App and all the private schools my son is applying to, plus 2 of the public universities, require submission of the âmidyear report.â
What I remember from last year when S23 applied is that, once I uploaded the information to the account, it was downloaded within a day or two by every school he had already applied to.
The directions on the midyear report are that the guidance counselor should upload a copy of the transcript, plus give the updated GPA, and any other notable changes as soon as either the first trimester or the first semester was over.
So, if your school is on a semester system with 4 quarters, the school would have to specifically indicate that they wanted first quarter grades. But if your school is on a trimester system, schools will expect the guidance counselor to upload all that information after the first trimester is over.
ETA: when the guidance counselor initially fills out the school information, one of the questions the form asks is âwhen will first semester/1st trimester grades be available?â if Iâm remembering correctly from last year, when the date that I gave for that got close, I started getting notices from the common app that I needed to upload the information.
Thank you for such a detailed account especially from the counselorâs perspective, so helpful.
OK, so in theory as of late last night S24 has what he considers submittable drafts of all his supplementals. They may still be refined today, but the plan is finalize and submit this afternoon with his college counselor.
Fingers crossed!
fingers crossed and good vibes to everyone who still has to submit today! May the common app be cooperative!!
Good luck to all the kids submitting today! S24 submitted his remaining EA application last night so he is in good shape! He is planning to step away from essay writing for a week before starting back in on his RD apps (6 of which have supplemental essays).
Itâs all starting to blur together, butâcoming up, a Nov 15 deadline for both her last EA, and a scholarship application.
THENânothing until Jan 4/5! I canât wait until she is done with all of it. Iâm very impatient today, and itâs lucky that I have a lot of work to do.
D24 has all her apps in. 1 ED, 3 EA, 8 RD.
Question about GPA - does it get recalculated including F23 Term 1 grades? I thought that her end of year junior GPA was what was âcountedâ by colleges?
THANKS!
It really depends on the school. One of S24 schools uses the SRAR and specifically says to continue to update it throughout the school year - the FINAL recalculated GPA will be used for final scholarship offers, etc. I think every school does it differently. I also know a few of his schools mention if they defer him to RD from EA he can submit fall grades to update the GPA.
hmmm interesting. I wonder if thereâs a way to find out? My kidâs GPA this term is the highest itâs ever been, with the toughest courseload to date - sheâs really engaged in her AP classes and the teachers are fantastic.
(Sheâs applying only to SLAC so I donât think she does the SRAR?)
By the way, âgood newsâ for all the other parents who will not be chilling until January now: because of early full-consideration scholarship deadlines, S24 has RD apps due 11/15 and 12/1. And weâre tossing in a last set of college visits early the week of Thanksgiving, because why not?
So for those who believe misery loves company, I should be here all this month to be your company!
No rest over here either! S24 has submitted a bunch of apps already but still has the UCs to submit this month, 6 additional RD apps (all with supplementals), and another completely separate app platform for another program. Then, likely - hopefully - interviews for several of the programs heâs applying to. Will be a marathon between now and early Jan.
D24 has a college interview tomorrow and then another one week after next.
Yup. ED deadline here is 11/15 and two scholarship deadlines 11/15, one 12/1 and one arts supplement still out due 11/6 and a scholarship auditions 11/8. I am trying to convince him to take a 24 hour break and then get it all done by 11/15 so he can have a relaxing thanksgiving break! I do think he has to cut down the RD list because there are so many essays to be done!
S24 has 5 schools left to apply to (Iâm advocating dropping one of them but he isnât ready to do that).
Our state flagship due 11/5
One reach due 12/1 with 2 essays (plus some honors & scholarship apps for state schools where he is looking for merit)
Two reach schools due ~1/1 with 4 essays between them
And the last (which I recommend dropping) due 1/15 I think with no additional materials required
My mom keeps asking why he is applying to so many schools (15 ), but each school on the list he has reasons for. And he knows he isnât sure what he wants: big name or low cost? Suburban or rural? Smaller student body for familiarity or bigger for broader opportunities? Closer to home but expensive or farther away but cheap?
So for now they all stay, and he will trade doing work now for having to make the hard decisions now.
