Parents participation on other site

Do any of the parents from this forum participate on SDN? If so, do you identify yourself as a parent?

Uh oh now you’ve done it. Mentioning other forums is verboten.

@srk2017

What are you planning to do? Pretend you are a student?

Be honest. You are a parent…so say you are a parent.

Don’t have an account and never will.
Kidlets told me very early on that they weren’t the least bit interested in anything I read online.

@thumper1 - I did say I am a parent and some of the kidlets are having tough time dealing with me LOL One guy said what’s this college confidential :sweat_smile:

@WayOutWestMom - My son is OK with me doing it. I seek out the info he wants. He is never interested in participating here or other site.

I have an account and post. I ask questions and provide input but no one seems to care what you are. I do tell people in messaging when they want to know who i am.

@srk2017

I am, by training, a research librarian so I was pleased when my daughters chose to do their own research about medical school and the admission process. They used primary sources and sought out recognized/established information resources, not unreliable sources like internet fora. (I trained them well!)

I feel strongly that by taking ownership of the process, their successes (or failures) became strictly their own and they could take pride in their successes and learn from their failures. D1 went on to become a recognized mentor for pre-meds (esp for those w/ non-traditional and/or disadvantaged backgrounds) while she was in med school & residency.

P.S. Not all of the “kidlets” posting on SDN are college student pre-meds, some are adcomms, current med students, residents and attending physicians.

@WayOutWestMom - As I said on the other forum, I am not taking over the process from my S. I ask general questions about ECs (like volunteering abroad) or clinical vs non-clinical volunteering (LizzyM sniff test :slight_smile: ) and I mention that I am asking for my son.

I stalk the SDN threads, mostly as a learning process for myself so I don’t drive my daughters crazy asking them questions! I’ve never posted or commented, but I have screen shot a few things and sent to my girls and they were appreciative. For me, it’s been helpful just to look at previous year’s threads (here and on SDN) to see when secondaries and invites have gone out in past. In fact, this year, when D2 was in gross anatomy and had NO TIME for anything but studying and was getting a bunch of secondaries, I made her a spreadsheet based on earliest interview invites so she could focus which ones to complete first. She was very thankful I took the time to do it… but after that, ball was in her court.

I stalked the dental forums when D1 was applying to dental school. I never made an account or posted. I mostly used it to check on when schools sent out interview emails/texts in the fall, how many interview dates and slots would be available, when decisions came out after the Dec 1 first drop. I passed on only info I thought she would find helpful. And I will say, there was very beneficial info I found nowhere else.

She tried reading it, but found it depressing and too intense. She was happy to punt that forum to me.

So you need your son’s “approval” to be on CC or SDN…LOL

Better they know that we are participating on SDN and not giving away too much info.
