Parents Visiting Classes on Parents' Weekend?!

My parents are pretty stoked for Parents' Weekend, and apparently they want to go to all my classes with me? They're insisting that parents are allowed to sit in on classes that Friday, and I'm personally mortified by this lol. Can anyone confirm? I could see parents being allowed to attend popular lectures, such as Psych 101 (which I'm in >.>), but are they really able to go to any classes they want to? My Chinese discussion has like 12 students and I'd die if my parents were sitting in the back observing, lol.

bumpity bump

No one is going to stop them from going to your classes, if that’s what they want to do. Yes, it would be rather embarrassing. I wouldn’t do it to my kid. College is your experience now, not theirs any more. It would be interesting to go to some popular classes, as you’ve mentioned, but to go to everyone of your classes is kind of like high school.

Aw man. Thanks, oldfort. Hopefully I can get them to just go to lectures, and not my discussion >.>

When I was a freshman I recall seeing at least a few parents sitting in my engineering classes. So, I suspect you won’t be alone, at least. The discussion part definitely does sound awkward, though, good luck with that.

If it’s a big lecture, like bio or chem, probably not a big deal. But don’t bring them to your smaller classes…

I know some classes say no visitors, like my French lecture and discussion.

If it’s a smaller class, just tell them that the teacher doesn’t allow visitors, but no one will notice in a large lecture. Well, someone will notice, but it won’t be a big deal. Haha.

^^^ i agree. try to convince them that no visitors are allowed for as many classes as possible.

good luck!

haha, thanks everyone!! I think it’s mainly my mom who’s all gung-ho about visiting classes, so I’m going to talk to my dad and see what he can do for me xD I don’t mind as much if they sit in the back of lectures, but coming to my Chinese discussion is definitely not okay with me.

As a parent, coming to parents’ weekend, I know no matter how much I will want to do certain things I need to respect my son’s wishes. So I know that showing up in a small class would be not okay…it is totally normal. So hopefully you can convey that to your parents (mom) that it is really time to just not share that type of experience!

I suppose you could tell your mom that the chinese class is held at Bradfield Hall #101, you have to do something on campus first so you’ll meet her there.

And then (much) afterwards explain that she must have heard you wrong.

Just kidding. Of course.
