ftgordon, yes you need a rental car. I would suggest it even if you stay in Great Neck as this will afford you the opportunity to take your Plebe away from the area.....which I'm sure is something that will be received well.

I just spoke with the Days Inn Hicksville (516-433-1900) and they still have some rooms left and they are under $100 per night, which is a great deal on LI :)

The drive is about 30 min from Hickesville to KP, and there are no tolls which actually makes the room less expensive than if you stayed where you had to cross a bridge or tunnel 2 times a day at $8 each way.

Last year our son was released for liberty after the football game on Saturday, and had to return Sunday. He had to be back Sunday afternoon for football practice, but non-football players got a few more hours, I believe.

Suzannegra, thank you for the info on Days Inn Hicksville. The price is certainly right for New York, and it is nice to know that it sounds safe and clean (pretty much my only requirements, since we won't be spending much time in the room!).

All of you are talking about Beat Retreat and how hot it is. First, if it's inside, it is true that is cooler sitting on the top of the bleachers with the breeze from the open windows. It's actually quite comfortable.

However, Beat Retreat is outside unless it's raining. So, most of the time it's beautiful.

It's well worth going. It will help you to realize how far your candidate has come, and will give you a feeling of real pride.

Thanks for the clarification KPMOM...I thought Beat Retreat was always inside..last year it was not raining and Beat Retreat was held in the very hot gym. Just giving a heads up for this year!

KPMOM, that is a very nice change. It was always inside every year I was there whether it was raining or not. I think if it were outside I might even be able to recommend going to beat retreat.

That is very cool! I've never seen or heard of one outside. Do they have it on the football field? Man, it is HOT when its in that gym. I've been getting on here for the past three years begging parents to take their own water as they will die of thirst within the first three minutes of the event. All of the drink machines in the gym were usually empty by late afternoon from the heat of the day. Whatever events new parents decide to do the entire week-end, go to Beat Retreat for sure. Its awesome. After the football game, be sure to line up at "the Grinder" for the kids to form up & be dismissed. That little "show" still makes me smile. Talk about some happy faces. Its all so good.

I checked with the Regimental Band Master and he said it will be inside Ohara this year. So, save us spots on the top bench, now that I have let out the secret of where we found the cool seats.

if you want to attend a special event on parents weekend, come by the Ga Parents Association table and check out our "wares". We have some great items for sale....sorry, just had to get the press...dont yell at me

Ok......LOL......:D The Mid-Atlantic Parents Club has some awesome stuff too....and will be selling the now famous KP Regimental/Academic Calendar to those parent's who did not get a chance to buy one at indoc....My plug for the day too cjcat!

For those of you who have students active in the Chapel program, you might decide to see what your son/daughter is attending. You are invited to the Bible Class at 9:30am where there is a continental breakfast (homebaking), interviewing students and a Bible teaching. You might be surprised at the relaxness and interesting time we have. Then Protestant chapel is at 11:15am.

Your candidate may want to just get off campus, and that's understandable. But if you want to come to the Chapel program, you are very welcome.

On Saturday, (Parents Weekend), are the plebes required to eat lunch at the buffet in Delano or are we allowed to pack a lunch and sit down by the Chapel? Just wondering because I think my son would rather do that.

ftgordon - I packed lunch last year and we sat at the waterfront and ate. It was nice except the weather was a little cool and misty. But it was better than eating at the buffet.
