Parking at UCLA

What’s the parking situation like at UCLA? I’m planning on trying to transfer for engineering in fall 2020. I come from New York State. I won’t fly as that is far too expensive. I drive a newer Ford Taurus. A full size car. Is it a pay every time you park or get a parking pass?

@lifetothefullest You should probably focus on getting admitted before worrying about parking passes. But to answer your question you apply for it and they are limited. Unless you need it for medical reason or work it is hard to get a pass for on campus parking since current students nab them up first. Also for transferring, the order of precedence is California Community College, UC, CSU, then other 4 year, then other community college. Coming from an out of state community college is very hard to get into UCLA Engineering. Also keep in mind that UCLA does not offer financial aid to out of state students so expect a min of 55k a year and it can rise every year as it has been.

Apart from the difficulty of getting admitted and the cost of attendance, I think that your premise that having a car at UCLA would be cheaper than flying back and forth from NY is incorrect (not to mention the difficulty of getting a parking pass – let alone paying for it! A student parking pass will set you back $250/quarter.

How is $750/year in parking alone (let alone the expenses related to gas, car maintenance, registration, insurance, etc.) going to be cheaper that a round-trip flight? If you buy airline tickets well in advance, they can be as low as $250 r/t (although the average might be closer to $400 to $500 r/t) from the NYC area to LAX. Assuming you stay in CA over the breaks, your parking fees alone with be twice what you’d pay in air travel. I don’t see how having a car would save you money.
