hey anyone know the safest way to get from union station to u of c campus using public transportation
or the least confusing, or the easiest..
i have no idea where the bus stops are on campus, or if there are any for that matter.. i will be commuting for 3 weeks in the summer from union station

Lets see, From union, there are a couple ways that arent bad. During the day, I would reccomend getting on the orange line at washington/wells and transferring to the green line to Garfield and just walking across washington park and you are on campus. Its my preffered method when the weather is nice.

If it starts getting late, I would probobly replace the green line with the red line and take the 55 bus (transfer at roosevelt) or else figure out something with either the x173 or the 6 bus and then whatever bus runs east/west by union.

Green or Red to the 55 seemed popular to students. There is a downtown shuttle in the evenings.

Probably the FASTEST way is to take the commuter rail to UoC station - but I don't think the trains come terribly often.

sorry, I forgot you said summer. The x173 doesnt run in the summer (the evening shuttle he mentioned). Also, the metra that heads towards the hyde park stations doesnt really connect well to union station so you will already be on CTA to get there (you cant get transfers to metra). If you have a Chicagocard or a chicagocard plus, $2 gets you 3 seperate rides within an hour of each other (most train to train transfers dont count since you only swipe the card once).

what about the x128? anything on that bus?

it runs...nobody takes it :)

do u knw if it stops near campus? it's the only one i found that leaves from union...

you're going to have to transfer from union

http://transitchicago.com/ has a trip planner you can use (set it to something like 1101 E 56th St (max palevsky,) so it gives you directions to teh right edge of campus and doesnt make you take an extra bus.

You will have to buy a CTA fare card to get transfers (buses charge you $2 every time if you pay cash but if you have a card, you get 2 transfers for a quarter) you may be able to get one in union station somewhere otherwise walk to the orange line and use a route that involves the orange line (look at that site for a system map that shows you where you can get on).

However, you dont have to do that if you are willing to walk a bit. The easiest route doesnt have any transfers (if you want to walk a ways) or bus stops that are kind of shady if you dont know exactly where to go is to walk all the way from Union east to state street and get on the #6 bus. It will run express down lake shore drive to hyde park where you will want to get off on the stop at 55th and hyde park blvd. Your option here is either to walk west until you hit campus (university ave.) or take the 55 bus west to university. If you do choose to take the 55 bus, you will need a transfer. Buying a CTA card with $5 on it will get you to campus thursday and back to union on friday (your host can probobly help you out with the best route on your way back).

The only reason I am not reccomending the trains here is I have had people get confused when I told them how to take the redline to the 55 bus (its a valid route though...I use it all of the time...just make sure you get on the eastbound bus) and the stop might be a little frightening if you have never been there before and arent used to the city.

heh, i'm doing this everyday for 3 weeks, i kinda have to get used to it

One can take a #1 or #151 bus to State St. from Union Station, then take the #6 Express Bus mentioned above.

oh, in that case, learn to take the red line to the 55 bus or the green line to garfield and walk across washington park.

for some reason (despite what you said earlier) I thought you meant jsut for the thursday overnight.

Also, you shoudl go to www.chicago-card.com and get a chicago card plus. This will make transfers easy as pie and is linked to a credit card. with this, initial fare is $1.75 on a bus and then you get two transfers for a quarter more and you dont have to worry about having a full card. If you do orange to green or orange to red to 55, you wont need transfers between the trains but you will for the bus.
