Is bringing a car worth it, or should I leave it at home?

Parking on campus is not easy to find, and you would probably use your car more for shopping or trips off campus. Even to go downtown, you would pay $$$ to park.

Check with your insurance company. Ours said that the insurance for that 1 vehicle would skyrocket to $1200 per year for the Chicago area. So yeah, not worth it.

First years aren't allowed to have cars.

Some people have cars. The vast majority do not.

S has a car as a second year. Finds it very useful. sHe ays parking is easier than he thought. If one lives in the Shoreland, parking tends to be easier. He pays for a permanent parking space in a garage on 55th as well.

Parking
After your first year in the College, you can bring a car to campus, but parking is very difficult. If space is available, you can buy a parking permit for a campus lot. Permits cost anywhere from $90 to $180 per quarter for students. Call 2-8969 for information.

D had a car her second year, but chose to go without her third year. She got tired of tickets (or worse, towig) for forgetting to move the car when temp no parking signs were posted (this happens all the time on short notice in Hyde Park, for street cleaning, repairs, moving vans and such) and for being the "go to" person for shopping trips, airport runs and such for all her "friends".

This is a city after all, with excellent public transportation.

i hope you dont mind if i intrude with a question.

is the city generally bike friendly?

I would say so. It's much flatter than New York, and the path along the lakeshore is well-traveled by cyclers and joggers alike. Getting from campus to the loop on bike probably takes about an hour (my friends have walked it and they say it's about 2-2.5 hours).

The dorms have bike rooms and bike racks. There's also a huge bike rack outside of Cobb, the main academic building... the dean of the College, Dean Bowyer, likes to ride his bike around campus in his suit.

It is about an 8 mile ride along the lake from Hyde Park to the Loop.

cool cool. i'll probably bring my wheels in summer when i visit. thanks a bunch for the info :).

So parking...

It depends on the time of day. At night and usually on the weekends, you can park bascially anywhere on the street. During the week, you'll be lucky to find a space within 4-5 blocks of the main quad in any direction. Almost no one uses a car for transportation around campus, unless they are running errands that cars make much easier. People will cars tend to avoid using them if public transportation will do the job relatively easily, too. I have one here in my third year. I didn' t have one for two years. It's been handy to have it every once in awhile, but I never noticed not having one.
