Got a chuckle from the “Say It Here Thread” where “What’s a Board Game” seemed to be a diss on older folks.
ALL of the newer games we’ve had over the past 8 years have come from my kids as they discovered them (first) with their peers! This started in high school and went through their college years. I work in high school. Our Board Game club is one of the most popular clubs there is with kids sitting around enjoying anything from board games to card games.
Someone is out of the loop, but I don’t think it’s those of us on this thread.
What is a landline anyway? Haven’t had one of those for years.
It’s my kids and nephew who discover all the new board games. I’m a broken record but Dominion is still my favorite game and it’s fine with two people. Faster paced than the way we more often play with three or four, but it’s still fine.
That was a bizarre comment on the Say It Here Thread, when boardgames are much, much more prevalent among the younger crowd. Someone should tell @skieurope that, lol.
Yeah, whenever I go to the game store - in any city (two near us even though we’re in a rural area) I always feel like the old lady the youngsters are trying to help walk across the street. If I showed up for their game nights I’d probably be the oldest one there - unless H came along, then he would be. We’re still in our 50s.
My personal favorite board game for the past year or so is Takenoko. We play with the Miss Panda expansion but I think it’s fun with or without. We like lots of games already mentioned, but one we’ve been playing a lot lately is Cockroach Poker. It’s just silly fun. We are also enjoying Azul, which is a few years old, but is new to us. Haven’t tried Parks, but will keep it in mind for the future! We love games.
Forbidden Desert is by the same maker and uses the same idea of cooperative play, only it allows for 5 players instead of just 4, which is the max for Forbidden island. The goal of Forbidden Desert is to escape the desert before your group is buried in a sandstorm. This is our go-to cooperative game lately because we cannot bring ourselves to play Pandemic.
Revisiting this topic to kvetch a bit that now my two younger kids have discovered Settlers of Catan (now Catan: the Game) and have turned into enthusiastic and determined Settlers. Lovely, right? The problem is that the board version needs three players and their oldest brother refuses to play so it’s me…every day…I mean I used to love Settling when I was younger, we had regular Settling nights in college (where I always lost because I kept trying to build aesthetically pleasing settlements whereas everyone else kept their eyes on the points) but every day…ugh.
I try to win as fast as I can because then they insist on keeping on playing together and I can go do something else, lol.
Lol re Pandemic! Hubby bought that a few years ago and little did we know. I never got into it and found it quite complicated.
We played Forbidden Planet with our kids when they were younger. Still have it, maybe it’s time for a reboot.
My family LOVES Bang!, with exclamation mark. It’s a standard vacation game. I actually don’t love it, but that’s because I always lose. It’s quite simple and has no pieces or board so it’s portable.
I never realized how vast the world of board games was until I started selling them. Listed below are the top best sellers from one of the larger manufacturers (Asmodee) of board games. I noticed many of the games mentioned in the post are on this list. FYI, I don’t sell any of these since I can’t beat Amazon.
If you search on the web, you will will find many reviews with detail descriptions and videos for most games. Some of these are expensive so it worth some research.

As is typical when we’re all together, we often play games after dark or during less than ideal weather. My oldest son introduced the rest of us to a new one (to us) these past two weeks and we really like it… All of us are adults, but older kids would be able to play it too.
Anyone else out there play Dice Forge? It plays best with 3-4 players in our opinion and is all about adjusting your dice to play cards and get points via both making it a combo of strategy and luck. One needs both to win.
I liked it so much they scrambled to get me my own for Mother’s Day (which for us was this past Sunday since we’re all together). I love my kids! (Not just because they give me things lol.)
