Parks and other Board Games you're discovering 2021

Recently we played Dominos (train version?) at my son’s. I never actually knew how to PLAY Dominos. My kids just PLAYED with them - you know, set them up on their sides and then pushed the end to make them all fall one after another?! Lol.

We really had a lot of fun playing. It didn’t take too long which is my requirement for a game - not long, not too much thinking!

Sounds like Mexican Train. We love that one too!

My grandparents would play Dominos a lot. Up to near her end my grandma was super capable of recognizing 15s and 20s from it. They used a point count version of the game where only counts ending in multiples of 5 count.

This is a late response but my DH and I are enjoying Santorini. It’s great for two people and has two different levels of gameplay. It’s an abstract 3d building game. We are also interested in more two person games.

My kids brought “Second Chance” to our Memorial Day rainfest, which I liked a lot. It’s basically competitive Tetris, done with just cards, pencils, and paper. Really easy and fun! They also played Wingspan and some incredibly complex haunting game (didn’t get the name) which wore me out just listening to them play. (Just looked it up–it’s called Betrayal).

Coming out of many years of lurking to chime in, but I’ve been a big board game fan for a while now. In 2020, we started doing virtual game nights with friends on a platform called Board Game Arena. A premium membership is something like $25 per year, which allows you to host private board games online with a ton of really good options for games (some games that have been mentioned upthread like Tokaido, Sushi Go, Takenoko, Santorini have virtual versions on this site).

Through this platform we’ve added several new games to our collection. Some of my new favorites are Dice Forge, Seasons, and Chakra. Chakra in particular is a very zen game that’s reasonably accessible to learn and a lot of fun. The expansion adds a bit of extra dimension to the game without overcomplicating.

Other than that my two all-time favorite games are Wingspan (mentioned above as well) and Lords of Waterdeep. The former we like to refer to as a low-sodium game because the game is focused on building your own engine rather than finding ways to interfere with other players’ strategy (not as fun if you’re a cut-throat gamer). Lords of Waterdeep is just a really solid resource-management game with a nerdy flair (based in Dungeons and Dragons lore but you don’t need to know anything about that to play). One of my spouse’s all-time favorites is a game called Tyrants of the Underdark (another D&D-based offering), which is a deck-builder that has a war-based board component as well (kind of like if Dominion and Risk had a really, really well-designed baby).

My daughter and I have enjoyed playing Splendor from time to time since Christmas. Fun, rather addicting, not too long or complicated, yet not so easy as to be boring as a quick go-to. It’s a game of trading gemstones and I wasn’t initially crazy about that (having once lived in a “blood diamonds” area of Africa) but it has a fantasy medieval theme that overrode my scruples :grimacing:

I bought Pandemic a year before the pandemic…somehow we never cracked it open and now…not sure when we will play it!

The more I play Dice Forge, the more I really like it. I wish it would take 5 players though.

I just found this thread. Hello my fellow board game nerds!!! Thoroughly enjoying reading this! Have you guys discovered anything else good?

My favorite pandemic game was Railroad Ink. We printed out boards with our friends and played virtually over zoom with each other.

Btw, I LOVE DICE FORGE!!!

Interesting reading this post this morning, as we’re about to get a Dice Forge game going…

Oh, and played Wingspan when we were with medical son a week or so ago. That’s fun. We don’t have it ourselves (yet). His friends brought it over with them to play. My guy gave it to one of them for their birthday earlier in the year.

We should play on board game arena sometime!!

I’ve never used that one. We use Horsepaste to play Codenames sometimes though.
