Oh, and you have some way of knowing what colleges don’t harbor such individuals? There have probably been such cases at most, if not all, colleges in this country.

Oh, and Virginia Tech – has it lost an appreciable number of students since one of it own students massacred 31 (?) others on campus? By your reasoning Tech should have been shut down – permanently!

I never said VA Tech – or Boston College – should be “shut down.”

Nor was I implying that there are not other colleges where a similar situation has occurred, although I doubt this is true of “all colleges in this country.”

The article caught my eye, surprised me a bit given the demographics of the student population at BC. I do not think it changes BC’s mission or rankings, but it is a negative story. To pretend otherwise is silly.

“…but it is a negative story. To pretend otherwise is silly.”

Of course it’s a negative. I do not pretend it’s not, but to use one instance as a basis to denigrate an otherwise commendable university is even sillier than pretending it isn’t.

A reputation is made by a number of incidents, not just one.

“… surprised me a bit given the demographics of the student population at BC.”

You weren’t laboring under the illusion that BC students are angels, were you?! I mean, there may be one or two, but, again, that is no reason to think of the whole place as inhabited by them. ;)

But this student was NOT your traditional BC undergraduate. He was registered for classes at BC’s Woods College of Advancing Studies, which is oriented towards non-traditional students. (If he was working towards a degree or not, I do not know, but many Woods students are non-degree-seeking.) Woods has a completely different set of admission criteria than A&S, CSOM, CSON, or LSOE. And once admitted, there are completely different course requirements at Woods – only 3 classes per semester (vs. the standard 5), the core curriculum does not apply, etc.

I also heard the robber had a Target gift card in his wallet. So, I know where I’m not shopping for Christmas gifts! Oh boy. Lots of robbers at Target. EEK!!

/ OP: I think you were ■■■■■■■■, but if not, hopefully your child is more in tune with the concepts of probability and statistics than you are.
// Just sayin’…

It is sad when a civil discussion can’t be had regarding an incident such as this one in which student safety is an issue.

D1 attends our state’s flagship and there are, upon occasion, situations involving crimes on or near campus which can affect the university’s reputation and raise concern for parents. These reports are often posted here on CC. No one is attacked or put down for doing so.

I’m sorry I offended everyone for bringing up this news report. That was not my intent. As I stated, it caught my eye and I found it disturbing. I don’t know the difference between the Woods campus and the regular campus, but it doesn’t seem to get much respect.

Rest assured, though, I won’t be “■■■■■■■■” the BC thread in the future!
