Okay soo I’m thinking about attending about the amherst diversity open house weekend, but i’m worried that i’ll end up sitting alone in some corner at a party. (Im not big on partying) Does anyone have any experience with this, and what do you really do over the weekend?

btw–i’m also attending dartmouth bound, so if you have participated in that, please let me know what its like!
thankss

I went last year to a DivOH at Amherst. During the day there are a bunch of seminars conducted with Admissions people, panels to ask questions of students and professors, performances by a’capella groups, that kind of thing. There’s a big schedule of events planned for DivOH kids.

You’ll be hosted in a dorm (normally with a first-year student) and one other DivOH kid. So, automatically you have people to hang out with. You’ll also quickly find a group of people to tour around campus and explore Amherst.

At night, clubs hold meetings set up especially for DivOH kids that you can attend. There are parties and I’d encourage you to go just to see what they’re like. When I was there, there were at least five or so being held, so I wandered around and sampled them all with a group of other prefrosh. Everyone was really friendly and more than willing to point us the right way when we got lost.

On Sunday night, there wasn’t a lot going on, so a bunch of us sat in the common room in Charles Pratt, ordered pizza, watched a movie and hung out all night. Some of us went for a 3AM sprint around the freshman quad barefoot.

DivOH was what pushed me to apply to Amherst early, rather than another school I’d been seriously considering. I’d definitely recommend applying. If you are accepted, then go! It’s free. It’s great.

If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to answer them.

If you receive the free ride to attend the Amherst DivOH, does it automatically deny you the abitlity to receive free transport to the other Questbridge schools’ open houses?

I am a finalist for the college-prep scholarship and it was unclear whether I could only choose one school to visit for free, or as many as accepted me.

I could not agree with areagris more…everything he/she said was very accurate…i would know because i also did DIVOH last october and i had a very similar experience…DIVOH was a lot of fun…you get to meet the entire admissions office and everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly…and they have tons of activities planned for you so you definitely will not be bored…and in terms of parties…i, for one, love partying so i definitely checked them out and had a great time…but if that’s not your thing then there are definitely other things to do on a satursday night

and funny thing you mention dartmouth because i actually got into both amherst and dartmouth and for the entire month of april i tore myself between both schools (i was literally 50-50 between them)…i didnt do dartmouth bound but i did attend a similar event they have for admitted students this past april and it was fun (although not more fun than amherst i felt)…and the campuses are completely different…dartmouth is way bigger than amherst and is practically isolated and thrown in the middle of nowhere in new hampshire whereas amherst is a really small campus and actually has life surrounding it (and you can always hop on a bus for two hours and head to boston for a weekend or something if you have a place to crash over there :)…i ultimately chose Amherst because i’m practically obssessed with it and i just feel like i belong there…but both schools are amazing and you cant really go wrong with either one

Best of luck with you on the college process and feel free to ask me any questions.

bluepurple, just call admissions and ask them to send you one. My D did that last minute, returned it express mail, was at DIVOH within a couple of weeks, and admitted a few months later. Best thing she ever did!

bluepurple: I have no clue how selective they are for admittance to the weekend, but they do get a fair amount of applications and have to turn people down. The application is pretty straightforward. Basic information, transcript (?), and a quick “Why do you want to come to DIVOH?” kind of question you need to answer concisely.

bluepurple: the process is mildly selective…they do receive quite a bit of applicants and they do have to turn some down (so its not like anything is guaranteed)…but of course not nearly as selective as the actual college process…my suggestion is get the application and send it as soon as possible (dont wait until near the deadline – which is around late august)

divoh is one of the best things you can do if you’re considering amherst…apparently, the same thing that happened to GA2012MOM occurred to me…i got the app last summer, filled it out, and sent it quickly b/c i was leaving the country…a few weeks later i found out i got in and then in march i found out i was an accepted student…statistically the admissions office say that nearly 75% of the students who do divoh and then apply to the college for admission actually get admitted (so it definitely increases your chances)…good luck!

So the process is somewhat competitive? I really want to go, but I’m worried I’ll be turned down! Also - how does the school decide whom they will send the letters to?

kiterunner18: well, the process is slightly competitive in the sense that they receive more applicants than they have space for – so, inevitably some students are going to be turned down — according to the admissions officers (whom i met at divoh and saw later on again in april) the applicants for divoh are “pre-screened” and essentially they pick those students whom they feel will have a really good chance at getting accepted in march (which explains why so many students who do divoh actually get into Amherst a few months later)

however, dont worry --if you get in, definitely seize the opportunity…it would only be beneficial (aside from fun)…and if you dont get it, it doesn’t mean that you wont get into the college later on (you very well could not have gotten divoh and then get into Amherst in march…divoh is not a deciding factor on admissions…it just helps a little)

Where do they get the list? From scoring high on ACT, PSAT? I seem to be getting mail from that. Do you know how many they send the letter to and how many get accepted?

While the other posters are correct about the club-sponsored events that go on Saturday night, there will still be main campus parties, so if you decide to break away from the pre-frosh and clubs for a better idea of Amherst nightlife, there will be something to do.
