What are parties like in Brown? Are they frequent and fun? Can someone care to briefly describe the social scene at Brown?

Yes.

There's a good balance between academics and partying here.

Parties are fun but not out of control or all people care about.

But Brown students definitely know how to have fun.

It's hard to "briefly describe" the social scene here because it's very broad. Is there anything in particular you are into? Anything in particular you want to know?

So what's the deal with alcohol? I live in Europe (the drinking age is 18) so I'm allowed to go to pubs/clubs - is the administration/police force at Brown really tough on drinking? If I were to have a beer at a Brown party is there a chance that I could get in trouble? Lol I don't want to seem paranoid but the Czech Rep and the US have pretty different tolerance levels for underage drinking, haha.

As long as you don't do anything stupid I doubt you would get into trouble.

The policy at Brown is basically don't ask don't tell. Don't make so much noise that you get a complaint, they don't care. Don't walk around outside with an open bottle-- they'll make you pour it out. Unlike other universities in the US there are no fines or penalties...

+1 to what modest said.

I lived in a European country with a drinking age of 16 before I came to Brown. I never even thought to investigate alcohol policies when I was choosing schools, but I am really glad I accidentally ended up at the most lenient school I know of.

The best benefits of the lenient drinking policies go to those who DON'T drink (I know a few). There's no waiting for your friends to stop pre-gaming in some closet somewhere - you can enjoy their company as they drink in a sane manner while you enjoy a refreshing non-alc :-)

with non disciplinary RA's there is very little to worry about in terms of getting caught. Having beer or whatever here is fine.

The good distinction is that people still do it in moderation

At my old school, drinking was more clandestine (at least in the dorms) but was absolutely rampant.

you can still get into trouble if you have alcohol in your room during inspections and you are under age

well if you're stupid enough to leave your jack where they can see it....thats' just natural selection

meh, you can literally put your alcohol under a sheet and they can't look under the sheet... the inspections are really for safety purposes, although I miss the day when alcohol wasn't even on the list of violations.

i know someone who does inspections, cough cough

good thing they warn you 1 week before the inspection then

there are also a number of fun clubs to go to. i go dancing or bar hopping a lot.

What are frat parties like, usually? Do people ever go to them but not drink much? Is there pressure to drink?

The leniency about drinking sounds great. I was so amused by what my ADOCH host said that I have to repeat it... "As long as you don't get EMSed more than a couple times per term, you'll be fine." ^_^

Well, there are always the kids who get EMS'ed....but most ppl know their limit. I go to them, and don't drink much. I'm really good friends with someone who drinks practically every day, and I feel no pressure to drink.

i can also tell you that the people who get EMSed at frat parties are usually not forced to drink that much (i.e. they drink too excess on their own volition). In fact, I'd venture that 85% of frat party EMSings come from pre-gaming too much, where the people get EMSed at the frat party without having even had a drink there.

I think one of the great things about Brown's social atmosphere is an openness to doing whatever while never really judging or pressuring anyone to join in.

there's little to no pressure to drink but it depends on your scene. I have no idea what the members of Thete are like. But you can always, you know, NOT JOIN THETE!

and as far as the EMS thing, here's where i roll my eyes and snort at at Brown. People get EMS'd here primarily because they get stranded by their friends and people don't to babysit them, but in reality, they just need to get put to bed with a trashcan at their bedside, or because someone is otherwise overreacting. OF COURSE there are exceptions where people really need it, but this has been my experience.

while on the topic - out of curiosity, is there much of a drug scene at Brown?

How about the RISD girls?
