I’m just curious…I know Penn is the “Social Ivy,” but when people talk about how much everyone parties, are they saying its party scene is similar to, say, that of a large state university, or are they saying it’s a party school compared to OTHER IVIES? I’d think that that would make a big difference…

Also, is the party scene inclusive i.e. everyone’s friendly and has a good time, or does it revolve around the frats and the rich, snobby students?

Obviously, I want to have a good time in college, and I don’t want my good time to be severely hindered by the fact that I’m not going to join a frat or that I’m not rich.

Thanks

For an Ivy league school penn is a big party school. You pretty much party thrs, fri, and sat night. On those nights there are at least 2-3 frat parties, various apt parties, parties downtown, and there are always clubs to go to. For the most part all the frats allow people in to their parties (at some of the wealthier ones you'll need to know someone to get in)...they never deny people at the door unless there are already too many people inside, then you'd have to wait until some people leave so that you can go in. So you really don't have to join a frat to have a good social life...you can still party at the frats without being in one...plus when some of your friends start joining you'll be able to get easier access to the frats, etc.

The only places you'll probably have a hard time accessing are the secret societies (owls, theos, zbt, etc), St As, and Zetes (two rich frats which throw good parties that are hard to get into without knowing someone.

All that said, however, the best parties are generally thrown by the wealthy frats and wealthy secret societies (owls). Owls, St As, and Zetes thrown the best parties on campus. The most exclusive ones being owls.

i'm not going to join a frat and im not rich, if that helps :D

i think there'll be plenty of normal, all-around fun kids

bern can you explain more about this secret society named the "owls"?

As a "secret society" they don't do a very good job of being secret, as we all know they exist. ;) But at least they don't have lunchboxes.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that one benefit of being at an Ivy with rich preppie kids is that it's pretty much a sin to charge for on-campus parties, unless it's a charity event. So unlike a state school, your underaged drinking is pretty inexpensive... Of age drinking on the other hand...
