The police don't care? Is this really a true statement? What about ALE?

Doesn't the ALE need DUPD permission to cite people and bst parties on campus?

I think ALE needs permission from DUPD.
I personally found Duke parties to be a little more tame than those from high school (smarter kids, I guess).. so there are going to be less things going on that will get police attention.

The police don't really care as long as things don't get out of hand (such as violence, vomiting, etc.). They'll usually walk the around the quads where parties are but they won't/can't (not sure myself) really do anything as long as you're drinking from cups. But those ALE guys are scumbags (grown men in streetclothes loitering outside parties and asking kids if they're drinking).

And regarding frat houses: often frats will have a section AND a house (where the seniors live, since seniors don't have to live on campus). They'll host parties at both, but the more exclusive ones will obviously be at the house.

can someone explain this whole alcohol law enforcement deal? are they like cops? what can they do?

Godevils: You seem to know a lot about this.
All the mixers and more..planned events are at the house right? Like, let's say there was a themed party, it would be at the house instead of the sectioned dorms, correct?

Well, they do definitely plan to have section parties in advance (some themed and decorated, some not), but I guess for the nicer events that involve actual preparation, they'd want to keep it more exclusive and have it at a house or at a club. Some frats' biggest parties are at off campus venues that they rent for the night.

Alright that's good then.
I would hate it if all there parties were at sectioned dorms..but who knows, I'm probably picturing it differently than it actually is, thus making it seem worse than what it is.

actually, you're probably picturing the parties at the sectioned dorms perfectly. They just make it look cooler/darker, but the narrow hallways get to be a pain. A lot of campus organizations throw parties at night clubs, so that's always good for a change of scenery. I had a car my first year, so I liked to venture off campus some weekends - UNC/chapel hill(Franklin St) has some really great parties/night clubs etc, but it depends on what you're looking for.

someone posted earlier that they thought duke parties were somewhat tamer than high school parties - do a lot of people feel that way? how does the fact that almost all duke students are A+ brilliant play into the social scene?

False. (10)

that's one of my favorite parts about duke... partying with very smart people (i would classify few as brilliant though....)

Yeah, are Duke parties actually tamer than high school parties? That's a little on the sad side if it is..

ok, not A+ brilliant - that was hyperbole - but how many A students get turned away....i dunno it seems like it ought to be a pretty smart/nerdy/dorky crowd....but then its not? im confused haha. is the party scene closer to PENN, or to PENN STATE? (Or is there really no difference?)

Greens, that really depends on who you hung out with in high school.

Yeah, it really does depend on what your social life was like in high school. There are kids at Duke who partied all the time in high school. There are kids who started partying senior year. And there are kids who will get drunk for the first time during orientation.

Open section parties usually aren't that nice, especially during orientation. You'll probably hate it. It basically involves hundreds of freshmen crawling around the quads on west and through cramped, hot hallways, looking for alcohol. Oh, Wannamaker.

Hitting bongs and blunts, beer bongs, bp tourneys, the usual party stuff.
So..now tell me how Duke correlates with this.

Duke's average SAT is 1450.
I think that's really smart- brilliant is more like 1550 but that's Duke's 75th percentile!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a higher proportion of 1550+ people who are hardcore partiers at Duke than those who got under 1400...

Oh, there's definitely all that and more at Duke (well, at frat parties, the drugs tend to be a little bit more private).

The party scene first semester for freshman consists of drinking fraternities' alcohol on west campus. You can drink also definitely drink in your rooms (just close the door) on East Campus fairly easily. Everyone pregames in their room before going out. Or you can take some liquor (in waterbottles) into the marketplace and have some jack n coke or vodka/sprite and do drunk dinners-- those are always fun.

Some freshmen (guys and girls) get to attend off campus parties first semester that are invitation only (held by the most "exclusive" fraternities.) That's where the real fun begins.

As for drugs, Dukies get embarrassed about anything other than pot, but that doesn't mean they don't do it. There are plenty of northeast trust fund kids who definitely have an appetite for cocaine-- but don't expect to see kids doing lines in front of everyone; people here care about their reputation.
