party school or...?

i kind of want to go there, but my dad doesn't want me to, because he says it's only a party school and that i won't get a good education there...but i've gotten mixed responses from people, so is it really a party school? and is it a good one?

Umm… I want to ask the same question. Can someone help us?

My son has many friends who attend UConn and yes, according to them, it is a huge party school. There are kids who don’t party, but since there is no sub free housing, it is sometimes hard to meet them if you want to do other things for fun. I understand the Honors housing at Buckley has less partiers as the kids there are pretty serious about their studies.

Can you get a good education there? Yes! College is what you make it!

I will be going into my Sophomore year next semester and it really depends on the person. Yes, it’s a party school, but it’s also well respected and difficult depending on your field and what you choose to do. I’m an actuarial science major and I don’t like the party scenes, and it was very easy to avoid them. None of the friends I made at the school were into that stuff either. I don’t drink, smoke, and didn’t really attend parties, but I still made friends and socialized. The actuarial program is difficult but also well respected, and there were tons of internship/job opportunities, as well as a career fair yearly for only our major. I can only speak for that, since that’s what I’m actually in, but I believe their engineering program is excellent, as well, and they have special programs for medical, pharmacy, nursing, law, etc. which are pretty hard to get into as well.

That being said, if you want to, parties are certainly easy to find, and yes it’s a “party school” because there are a LOT of parties. But it’s not a party school to the fact where it’s impossible to avoid.

I said something similar to this on another thread-- I attend the high school ON UConn campus so I basically live there. UConn is one of the top schools in the state, and it’s also in the top 20 overall for public education. Its party scene is actually not that great, I can asure you. Like any other school, there are those who choose to party 24-7, those who party once in a while, and those who are all about the books. It’s really up to you to choose the crowd you want to hang with but I can tell you from experience I’ve walked/been around UConn at night in the fall/spring/winter or whenever and sometimes it’s completely dead with nothing going on and other times there’s students all over going to house parties. Usually they’re all over between 12-2. But UConn being a party school is the last thing you should worry about because you will be shocked to find more studious people than not here.

Another thing, I’ve heard unless you join the sororities/fraternities the party scene isn’t all that great actually and it’s a bit more difficult to find them if you don’t have an “in.” But honestly, it’s impossible to avoid going to school where students don’t party… they even do it at the ivies… duh.

Apply there!! :)
