Party/social scene?

Hey guys!

I got into Vassar last week and couldn't be more thrilled. I was just wondering, for people who are currently at Vassar, what's the party scene like when students feel like cutting loose? I know greek life is non-existant (which I think I like), so are dorm parties pretty frequent?

Thanks!

I’m curious in regards to this as well, along with the general attractiveness of the student body, because concerning the latter, I’ve heard a lot of negative things. I’d rather know before I make my decision, as I’d be spending four years there.

I have literally never been to a ‘dorm party.’ They technically aren’t allowed, but they happen. They just seem like the most trite, ridiculous things in the world. I’ve been to the occasional party in senior housing for choir or quidditch, and those are usually interesting. But, if you’re a person who just wants to party for the sake of partying, there are places for that, too.

However, there is gossip about people who do stupid things when they party, and if you choose to do that, it is a small school and many people will know. But that’s on you, not the school.

If you like loud music and unsanitary dancing, there is always the Mug. Or you can do all-campus parties. For people who like to party, there are things to do, and for people who don’t, there are still things to do. I think you need to be a little less concerned about the party scene and more concerned about the general social scene.

how does one get involved in these social things? does one have to go searching, is it word of mouth, or is it just common knowledge?

Vassar’s website has a wealth of information.

What typically happens on a weekend (read thursday, friday, or saturday night) is that students (myself included) will pre-game in the dorms from about 9-1030/11 and then go to a larger party elsewhere, such as senior housing, off campus, an all campus party, the mug etc. I personally enjoy the mini “dorm parties” since you are partying with your friends, and it is a relaxed atmosphere. I don’t really understand where “averagesnarker” is coming from when he/she calls them trite and ridiculous, since I have had some of my most enjoyable partying experiences in my room, or other rooms in my dorm (minus the constant cat and mouse game with security…).

In terms of finding out about parties and a like, the mug is always open and the all campus events are advertised. Otherwise it is usually through word of mouth, but since its a small campus, once a party reaches a certain size the entire campus seems to know about it.

Is the mug pretty popular?

CrystalJ: Depends on the night. If there is a good band playing/theme then it can get crowded. Some nights though, when there are a lot of other things happening on campus it can be fairly empty.

Are most social events/parties open to campus?

Depends. When I go to parties, they are almost exclusively at TAs and only for people of a certain group/club/activity. Dorm parties are even more exclusive because, well, the rooms (at least in my house) are ridiculously tiny. All campus events are open to everyone, and there are a lot of TA/H parties that you can get into pretty easily, though they tend to have a higher risk of unfortunate things happening because you usually don’t know the people very well.
