Pasadena City COllege Ppl

tommy's is close by
must try pataya, i get dinner before my class.

Yam's the bio 1b professors at pcc are good. I heard cilette is the easiest. She's teaching this winter and spring. Jarold i think also teaches 1b, but he's more detailed. I heard you come out of his class knowing the stuff really well.

As for chem1b over the summer, that's what i did to myself this summer. The stuff was a lot more interesting than 1a, but i would have enjoyed it more if it was during the regular semester. Do it if you want to, but prepare to isolate yourself from the rest of the world for the six weeks. it's a lot of work. The majority of the chem professors at pcc are good.

Here are some excellent gchem professors at pcc:
Huber
Anasari
Sweimeh
Wood (she's strict tho)
Mack

Some not so good:
-Mckee (i had him for 1a and 1b, and he's not as bad as ratemyprofessor makes him out to be. He's the hardest gchem teacher, but he really prepares you for the major exams which are standardized by the chem department at pcc. His lecture are unstructured, so it's selfstudy in that class. He has an intimidating personality, but once you get over that he's a pretty cool person.)
-Benedicto (he's cool and smart, but does not teach well.)

I'm planning to transfer next fall. I'm applying to fall 07 like you. ucla is my first choice, but i'm also applying to ucb, ucsd, uci, and ucsb.

Adamantine, i'm sure you'll be able to handle two math classes during spring (that should be spring instead of fall right?). I'm taking stat 50 right now and it's really really easy. It's 10x easier than calc. Even probability is easy in this class.

yea for spring =D thanx again
i think ill have lots of fun with 2 math classes =P

Thanks Sakura. I am still debating on whether I should take my Bio 102(Bio 1B class) at PCC although it sounds quite reasonable.
What book do you guys use? Are you guys using Campbell and Reece's?
We're using Purves at my school.
My biology 1A teacher at GCC is quite easy, considering it's a major's biology class. His class is a hell lot easier than my AP biology class from high school actually :x

That's strange that Bio 1B is 4 units at PCC, it's 5 units at GCC!
And if I were to take it during spring with my chemistry class, I would have labs 4 days of the week. Sounds pretty ridiculous to me, unless I take one of these lab classes during the short sessions.
And I'd kinda rather take Bio than Chemistry over these short sessions..
I was thinking of taking Chem 1B at PCC but too bad it's not offered during the winter.

Sakura since you're doing pre-health, do you know if it is looked down upon that I take my pre health sequences in two different schools?

Say Bio 101 at GCC and Bio 102 at PCC?

I mean, I know the content is essentially the same, but do you think it is okay that I do both sequences at two different schools?
In fact, UC Davis's Vet school say that we can take lower division sciences in any schools, just that genetics and biochem must be taken at a 4 year university/college.

By the way is anyone here going to that UCLA TAP conference thing? You can go regardless of you being a TAP-er or a non-TAP-er.

My sched:
Winter
BIOL11
HIST1A
and then either SOC2 or CHEM22

Spring
MATH5A
and then probably 2 sociology courses and another fun one (speech maybe?)

but yea...i'm pretty much done

Mine:
Winter:
CS 2

Spring:
Math 10, 55 (might take em at mt sac since they combine them into 1 class)
CIS 14 (most likely taking it at elac since the class at pcc is at 7am!!)

and i'm so doneeeee!!!!

Yea, we use the campbell and reece book for bio 1a and bio 1b here. It's four units long here, but we have lab in bio1c and gcc doesn't offer lab for bio 103. It's probably easier doing bio than chem over the intersession, but bio is going to be a lot of memorization. I don't think bio labs are as intense as chem lab so four days a week shouldn't be that bad. Last year i took physics and chem and I had lab 4 days a week. it wasn't bad, i just had to stay in school longer.

I think it's going to be really hard for you to get into chem1b over the summer because of the priority system. chem 1b fills up really fast during the summer especially if a good teacher is teaching. Maybe your better off taking it at gcc, unless you constantly check for openings.

I really don't know much about taking the science classes at different institutions. I know that grad schools tend to look down at students who take there prereq's at community college. At least this is the case for med schools. Maybe it might look better if you take half of it at a community college and half of it a four year university. You should probably ask someone else more knowledgeable in this subject.

In regards to the chemistry professers listed, I would rank them accordingly:

Huber
Sweimeh
McKee
Mack

Huber hands down is an awesome professor, she has a cynical sense of humor and that's a turn off for some students. She gave me a lot of college advice and recommendations for internships and private schools.

Sweimeh is a new professor, she was pretty cool too. She's very down to earth but once you see her lab quizes, ouch, she's very strict on techniques (In 8A/8B she was, don't know about 1A/1B). Her after finals parties are pretty cool, you go bowling and you get your ass kicked by her in bowling.

As for McKee, I like to think him as of the UC teaching style. He throws you into a river and lets you literally swim. He's not that hard, I found him easier than Huber and Sweimeh, just got to read the book and do problems.

As for Mack, sadly to say, she's nice and all but she's like "Chemistry for the Mentally Challenged." She'll baby and nurture you and half the class is still failing sadly. I didn't study nor did I do the labs, I imagined the reactions, put some ******** down and still pulled off an A. Don't know whether she's been "traumatized" by the CC experience or what.

Don't know since I didn't have: Ansari/Woods.

As for math professors, I took:
5B - Gallup (Good guy but has trouble teaching, really nice though!)
5C/55 - Encinas (Can't say anything really good...)
10 - Wang (Cares about your future a lot)

TB54

P.S. As for sakura812, I think you meant Jarrell. I had him for 1A, funny professor. I couldn't take him for 1B due to Physics 1C/Chem 8B time lapse. Friend took him for 1B and said he wasn't that hard, just got to put in the time. In my opinion, take the time to meet your professors at PCC, it's much easier compared to a UC.

Haha, yea, it's Jarrell. Thanks for correcting that TB54. I was too lazy to look up the spelling of his name :) I never had Mack before. All I've heard about her is that she's nice and she's an ok teacher. Then it's probably pretty easy to get an A in her class.

I had Huber, and i thought she was pretty easy. I didn't have to open the book. All i did was listen to her lecture. Then again this is probably because I had her for chem 22.

You're right about McKee. He throws you into the ocean and let you swim alone. The only thing that was hard about his class was the quizzes. The quizzes screwed me up. Other than that I actually enjoyed all his sarcasm :)

Yea, Sweimeh is good. I once asked her for something and she did a really good job explaining it to me. She's the easiest ochem professor and everybody is trying to get into her class this year. Her ochem class filled up the first day. I don't think it's her who is picky about lab techniques. It is the nature of the course. I'm taking 8a right now my teacher goes indepth with the lab techniques.

Since you started a list of math professors, I'll add to it.

Uyekawa is really good. Even though she's very by the book with grading, you'll come out of the class knowing your stuff. She also gives out take home tests. I had her for math 5b. I didn't realize that she was that good until I took math 5c with Strinden. Strinden is a nice guy, but I ended up dropping his class the second week because he was going too fast for me. Then again I'm not great at math.

Btw, TB54, you transferred already right? Are you an engineer major?

bleh you guys talk about school too much :(

Let's party!!

PCC party YEAH!

i'm having uyekawa for math 5c right now and she really is a good professor....her notes are crystal clear and lecture is top notch...she always relate the math topic to real world application stuff so we know what we're actually computing

In my opinion, Sweimeh isn't the easiest o-chem professor. She's really down to earth but she gets harder as course progresses. McKee is easiest due to just from the book. We only had 4 As for 8B out of a class of like 23. Benedicto had 8 and Sy had 5. I barely got my A, she was nice enough to give it to me for 8A/8B (Less than 0.3% off).

Second test for 8A/8B killed me.
8A: 94, 78, 84
Final: No Idea, was happy I got my A
8B: 92, 72, 99
Final: like 142/150

As for my major, yes I'm a chemical engineer and I transfered out of PCC to UCLA.

She emphasizes proper lab techniques A LOT. We had some person knock over our experiment in the fume hood, we get the whole lab deducted up the wazoo. Not our fault but stuff happens.

As for math professors, just don't take Encinas if you're an engineer. You'll be regretting it, I am. Sure the A may look nice but the C in upper division courses doesn't!

we shud have a party for pcc cc ppl =) where where? pataya cafe?

I've heard that PCC has guitar courses, but I cannot find them on the online catalog. Are these courses transferable? will it affect my gpa? How can i take these classes? Are these classes pass/no pass or for letter grade?

=) Thank YO!

Where is Pataya cafe? Across the street?

Pataya cafe is across PCC =) best place to eat around there

whats good there? i'm nto a big fan of pad thai.

Lake street restaurants are good. Corner Bakery, Wahoo's, Baja Fresh, and Souplantation.

Colorado has great food too, Zankou Chicken and King Taco are my fav's.

And whenever you get your paycheck, splurge out on Green Street and the Old Town restaurants :D

Adamantine, it's listed under the Music section. I think its a one unit class, so it won't affect your gpa that much :) I think it's transferable because the course number is listed below 100.
http://www.paccd.cc.ca.us/instadmn/compsvcs/kiosk/SCHEDULE/SC01320.HTM

So who's planning the party, you Adamantine?
I like souplantation. I love their clam chowder soup :) And I'm not a fan of thai food either.
