Pass/Fail

okay so I heard that you can make one of your GE classes as pass/fail meaning I get no letter grade for it. If I do that how do they calculate my GPA? Also if I'm transferring, would the admissions officers not like the pass/fail?? and also can I make writ 140 pass/fail?

bump 10char

No need to bump this 21 mins later.

But back to the questions, yes, you can take up to 1 GE pass/fail. If you pass, then your GPA will not be affected, you will just receive credit for taking the class, so it wouldn’t matter if you got an A or a C. I’m not sure if it affects your GPA if you fail, but I’m assuming it wouldn’t. I can’t comment on the admissions officers issues as I have no idea. You can not take WRIT 140 (or WRIT 340 later on) pass/fail, you must receive a letter grade.

thanks for the info!

but i want to know if it affects my transfer app

You may not take 140 Writing Pass/Fail, and only one GE class can be taken Pass/Fail.

If you want to transfer out of USC after Freshman year, your USC transcript will be looked at for rigor and a high GPA. Taking any academic class pass/fail is less rigorous and your GPA is somewhat less impressive since it’s easier to get high grades in your remaining classes when you can slide in one. It also may make it harder for transfer colleges to predict a student’s future GPA when he/she would take more advanced courses without the break of Pass/Fail.
