Passing Grade?

I am a rising third-year and I am still confused about what a passing grade is. I got a D in Organic Chemistry I, but a C in Organic Chemistry II. Is this D considered passing and will it count toward graduation? Thanks!

D is a passing grade and it will count towards graduation as well as be included in your GPA. If you try to retake the class both attempts will show up on the transcript, but only the grade for the first attempt will be factored into your GPA.

Fun fact, if you had failed the class on your first attempt and then retook it, the grades from both attempts would be factored into your GPA. This means it is potentially better to fail the first time than get a D from a GPA perspective. If you got a C+ or higher the second time around you would come out of the course with a higher average than 1.0. Weird! =/ Of course if you outright fail a class that probably looks worse than just getting a D.

UVA should really change the policy so that the higher grade counts after a retake imo.

Hmmm … might this depend on your major? I am aware, according to the physics website, that you need a C- for it to fulfill major requirements. Not sure about other departments as this is the one that pertains to me.

Might be worth looking in to a bit further. I second the GPA/retake stuff, though. That’s accurate.

Typically you need a C- to major credit for a course but if you’re just looking to “pass” a course then a D is technically passing.

^Makes sense. I suppose OP didn’t ask about major, just thought I’d throw it out there.
