Passing the Time: Books, Movies, and TV Shows!

As March 10 creeps closer, I think we all need some good distraction. Anyone have any good book, movie, or TV show suggestions to pass the time? List them below! I’ll start:

Books:
-George Washington’s Secret Six (it’s more interesting than it sounds, seriously)
-Take Me With You by Catherine Ryan Hyde (I cry every time)
-Anthem by Ayn Rand (if you haven’t had to read this in English yet, you probably will, and it’s worth the read now tbh. Super short, fantastic book)
-The Perks of Being a Wallflower (still haven’t seen the movie, but the book was a surprise. Less John Green-y, more… dark)
-1776 by David McCollough (you’ll laugh, you’ll gasp, you’ll forget you’re reading about the American Revolution…)

Movies:
-Dead Poets Society (Set at a Prep School, so it’s very relevant to me rn lol. I just finished it for the first time and I cried my eyes out)
-In Time (remember when Justin Timberlake did a dystopian movie? Yeah, me neither. It’s great though)
-The Holiday (technically a Christmas movie, but it has Jack Black, so does it matter?? no)

TV Shows:
-Grown-ish (watching this one with my parents lol, it’s bright, funny and fresh)
-Gilmore Girls (basic, of course, but amazing, and the Chilton School in the series is based off of Choate!)

Anything to add?

Book: Ready Player One (and the move is also coming out sometime soon!)
-about VR game that has hidden treasure of a fortune
Book: Crazy Rich Asians (trilogy)

Book- The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown (Exeter grad so may be especially interesting to some people here)
TV show- The X Files (Im not sure whew this could be found, but it used to be on Netflix, highly recommended 90’s show about get conspiracies)
TV Show- Lost (Also recently took off Netflix, but highly addictive(at least in the first few seasons) mystery box show)

Book- Anything by Sarah J Maas tbh you just get sucked in to her worlds
TV Show- Marvel Runaways (Kids parents do questionable stuff; kids find out they can do cool stuff, great starter for the marvel universe)

Book-The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom (it’s part of a series, and this is the first book. It’s a great twist on
fairytales and very humorous.)
Book-Adding on to @willmo, Crazy Rich Asians is one of my favorite series. It really hooks the reader in. Basically a reality TV show in book form.
TV Show-Scream Queens (Imagine Mean Girls, except they’re in college now and they’re investigating a series of murders happening on their college campus. It’s really great. Don’t knock it until you try it.)

Movie: Train to Busan
-it’s a zombie apocalypse movie set in south korea. Subtitles may be needed, but definitely a movie that kept my hands over my eyes for literally the entire time

TV Show- The Good Place (Available on Netflix. The funniest show I have seen in years. It’s not just about after M10, it’s about afterlife! )

I’ve heard of that. I think my brother watched it on my Netflix account. Another TV recommendation would be Black Mirror which is kinda like the Twilight Zone but much more modern. A little bit of sci-fi and social commentary

Book-The Memior By Lady Trent series is a fun read, and there’s five books, so you’ll be distracted for a while.

TV- Brooklyn 99, I mean, this is a pretty common one, but there’s a ton of episodes and it’s really funny and engaging.

Movies- Black Panther is in theaters right now, and it’s phenomenal, any of the Lord of the Rings movies are fun(and less of a commitment than the books), if you’re looking for horror/thriller, Hush is amazing!

Shows - Survivor has a really great season that just started. And an Andover alum is on it. And if you haven’t seen the Office or Parks and Rec, shame on you. They’re both on Netflix.

Books - Heretics. It’s an awesome graphic novel about philosophers during the reign of the Catholic church. It’s really surprisingly interesting.

Movies - Arrival. Still my favorite movie ever. Recommended - watch it twice, back to back. It’s the kind that you need to watch several times to really know what’s going on.

Movies - The Wolf of Wall Street; It really makes you think how crime is in our daily lives and really does glorify the act, or lack thereof. Watching TWoWS, I always wanted to be Jordan Belfort, even if he is ripping of people to make money. Really does make you think is society is just reverse Marxism where the hero’s are the bad ones while the villains are the good ones. Plus, any Scorsese movie is good.

TV Shows:
-The Blacklist, a super intriguing FBI/criminal show with way too many plot twists and cliffhangers
-Brooklyn 99, perfect, enough said.

Books:
-The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks, great for anyone interested in psych
-Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, super creepy but well written, one of my absolute favourites.

@woodcal03, who is the Andover alum on Survivor, I’ve been watching that too.

@FunintheSun1211 It’s James.

Hey, I’m super late to this but in case anyone needs a binge-ful tv show, I’ve got you!

Watch BBC’s Sherlock! It’s the best thing ever!

I’m late as well but Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of the funniest shows I’ve ever watched (can be a little inappropriate at times, btw).

For books, I recommend Crime and Punishment. It really sucks you in to the mind of the main character and it’s my favorite book of all time.

^ Ночные ведьмы, are you interested in the Russian language and culture? (Making assumptions based on your name/avatar). If you are, you should one day aim to read Crime and Punishment in Russian. The English translation doesn’t do it any justice.

BTW, I noticed that you were accepted at two schools with Russian language programs, Exeter and Hotchkiss. Something to consider…

I would love to learn Russian! It’s always been a dream of mine, however, I am already studying French and German so that may not be a possibility, unfortunately. I hope to join any Russian clubs that are not language-focused. And I do agree that something is lost in the English translation. It’s a little dry. Still amazing writing and characterization.

Also, I am a HUGE fan of the Soviet women fighters, snipers, aviatrixes, etc, as you can probably tell.

Have you read The Story of Zoya and Shura? A required reading when I was in 1st grade… https://www.biblio.com/the-story-of-zoya-and-shura-by-kosmodemyanskaya-l/work/1766742

I haven’t! Thanks for the link!
