What do you do now, in this phase of your life, that is good, focused on others?

I read apps and every other STEM kid wants to be biomed. Literally, they talk about saving lives, improving conditions, etc, etc, and you can see they actually have done very little that’s not about themselves and their own interests.

Most adults, including many very sucessful, are cogs in the big wheel. You don’t want that, but with rare exceptions, most of us are part of some larger team effort. We do our part, do it as well as we can, end up splitting our focus among many priorities- family, community, work, etc. I’ll skip the adult giving a kid advice thing. But, taking action can be very fulfilling. Start somewhere.

And, think about this, from Emerson: To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

If you want to write, you have to have something to say- that comes from experiences, observations, some testing. Only after that, do opinions and personal philosophies really define themselves. Skip NaNoWriMo- for most, that’s about scribbling anything just to get to 50k words. It’s not about the tortured soul; it’s about how you connect with others.
