Paul Merage School -- Questions

Okay, I'm a CC college student and i will be transferring Fall 2010. My Major is Business Administration - Management.

So far as with most other Biz majors Haas is my first choice but i'm debating if i get denied [most likely] if UCI will be a better choice than Cal Poly SLO.

I do plan to get a MBA so i need networking. Which college has the upper hand in regard to this?

And I would deeply appreciate some feedback from the current students/alumni at Paul Merage.

Thanks.

UCI only taking 15 students as transfer/change majors so its going to be super competitive, even more than Haas. UCI offers Business Management Information under the tag program. It is a dual business/computer science curriculum. The core business sequence is exactly the same as a business admin major.

I’m not a UCI student so I can’t really give you any feed back on the program there.

I am currently undecided/undeclared, incoming freshman. Do you know how many spots there are to transfer in my junior year? Or am I just also competing with students outside of UCI for those 15 spots?

Well thats what the site says. I can’t really tell you cuz i dunno =/ . You should ask the department.

Hm, I’m definitely not interested in becoming an IT guy, which is basically what MIS or in this case, BMI people do.

so im guessing UCI would have better opportunities for networking than CPSLO?

The curriculum is exactly the same but the management information major takes like 6 computer sciences + the regular business admin major. But you end up with a different “title” on your degree.

I dunno about the networking. The undergrad program is fairly new and the students haven’t even graduated yet. So there aren’t people out there working and promoting the business admin degree. UCI’s biz undergrad might hit the business world with a bang or it may not. We’ll see in a few years when they graduate.

hmm i’ll have to check with UCI to confirm this but thanks for giving me an idea.

I’m very surprised UCI is accepting such a small number of transfers. Let me ask you this; suppose i do not get into UCI or UCB. Does UCR have a better UG experience than CPSLO? Pretty much the only thing i’ve seen at UCR is their offering of a BA with a concentration in human resources; which is what i like because i want to become a Human Resource Manager.

Could you help me out with this? I wished the counselors at my CC weren’t so useless.

Graduate school is my main concern and im not sure if i attended a UC, that would increase my chances of acceptance to a graduate school vs attending a CSU for UG.

I think UCR and CPSLO are both good. As long as you don’t come from a no name school I think you will be fine. For grad school, I think work experience + high gmat scores are the highest in priority for admissions not the school you came from. If your interested in human resources, then I suggest you go to the school that offers it.

In your opinion, What would be a sufficient amount of work experience before i wanted to go for the MBA, year wise? I’ve also received additional information and i’ve come to a conclusion that a MBA will benefit me the most.

Because i want to pursue a General Management MBA degree, obviously i need to do internships at business’s/corporations. Are there any names that carry more leverage as far as employment opportunities are concerned ?

I can’t really help you, I’m not an expert. Still an undergrad =/. I think you should concentrate on your career more than rushing to get a MBA.

Yeah depending how great the UG is, i might be happy with the BA/BS degree but i’m just preparing for the future and it looks like i’ll roughly be 28 when i do apply for the MBA degree. Or i could skip the MBA and pursue the MA degree but time will only tell.

Here’s my wish list of acceptance. 1.UCB 2.USC. 3 CPSLO OR UCI (Still iffy on this) 4. UCR – safety school big time.

had a posting issue, when should i considered out of state as an option? let’s talk hypothetical situations to paint a broad picture. haha i hope you don’t feel like i’m squeezing you of your non-expert advice. =]

Well, I would say never. Cause the tuition is not worth it lol. Pretty sure you will get into UCR and CPSLO forsure if you got a decent GPA. But if I got into UCB, USC, or UCI than I would take that instead.

It looks like a lot of Veterans got into haas last year. and most of them had like >3.8. You know of any threads regarding haas admitted from '08? Or any individuals who got in? I would most definitely want to PM them.

Would you mine posting some of your stats? I believe you go to Paul Merage, right?

Nope. Not even a business major nor a UCI student yet lol. I am just a bio major who would have gone into business if i had a time machine.

Well my stats:
3.93 GPA
Major: Bio Sci / Biochemistry
Schools I got into: UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCI (basically all UCs)

hahha, nice. at least you know your stuff! why not minor in biz? hmmmm that’s such a large spectrum to go from biz to bio, why bio?

I’m a pre-med/pre-pharmacy. By the time I finish all the pre-reqs for both ill be like 3/4 of the degree already so I might as well major in bio. I already planned to do a biz minor too lol.

I do the research on biz because I want to advise my little brother and confused friends at my CC to go into biz. A lot of my friends are staying a 3rd year at my CC just cause they don’t really know what to do. They always ask me what they should do cause I am like the only one who made it out. I always tell em biz. The curriculum is not too hard and the salary/job prospect are good for a 4 year degree.

ohhhh, why not didn’t you attend UCSD? i think, [not sure] they have an excellent program regarding your pre-stuff. yeahh biz is a safe major imo and like you said, you make bank pretty fast especially if you attend any of the top biz schools according to b-magazine.

UCI = free money and I like the bio program there. UCI is more relaxing and the schedule way more flexible. And the OC is awesome. Plus they offer business minors lol.

ohhhh, good ****!
