I am planning to pay for college myself and was wondering how feasible it is and how I could do it. My parents applied for financial aid and we didn't get any, the college is out of state (Univeristy of California Santa Barabara) so it is quite pricy. My parents won't help pay for an out of state college and aren't letting me go because they think that they will have to end up paying for it.
I essentially have no money right now and wanted to know where I could go to pay for all of it myself. I'm okay with being in debt after school. I'm also ok with having a job, but if you had a suggestion of types of jobs I should be looking for (i.e maybe one with a flexible schedule) I would like to know that too.
I really want to go to this college but I need to give my parents the peace of mind that they don't have to pay for it, we are middle class so I will probably end up having to pay the normal amount an out of state student does.

Did you apply to your in-state university? UCSB will be over $45,000 for out of state, and I cannot think of any flexible-part-time-jobs for high school graduates that pay that much. I understand you are excited about Santa Barbara and certainly encourage you to look for ways to pay for it yourself, but your parents are giving you good advice. Graduating from college with a near-$200,000 debt (assuming you could qualify for the loans without your parents co-signing), would be a huge burden on you. While you investigate ways to pay for UCSB, please also investigate other schools you have been admitted to that are more affordable. Good luck!

Get some scholarships first man’

I’m paying for 90% of my college expenses and I’m okay with going a bit into debt (but then again I’m in-state at the UC system)

also, I’ve gotten a bomb summer job that’ll bring a good amount of cash… I’m also
getting a private job tutoring at the local high schools and on-campus… NOT work study, but private tutoring… I know some people who make 20 dollars an hour doing that (they have to be good tutors of course but there are people who will pay for good quality tutoring)

and I’ll be an Spanish tutor for AP or whatever level cause I’m the bomb at it.

Haikumarukuchan, when you have actually lined up all of the scholarships and loans to pay for 90% of a UC out of state, please come back and tell us exactly how it’s done. This plan is completely unrealistic for the vast majority of kids.

Kehoe, I’m sorry, but this is not a good plan. You hear stories about people who put themselves through college, but they are usually talking about community and in state colleges.

Just getting the kind of loans you need would require parents with great credit to co sign, so any way you look at it, your parent’s would be involved.

I know it’s hard at 18 to imagine what it will take to pay off $200K in debt. You will need an amazing job or two when you graduate. While your friends are having fun, enjoying vacations, buying cars and buying homes, you won’t be living anything like they are. The average debt in $20K post college, you’ll have ten time that.
