So I'm not sure what to do about this. this girl is like a dartmouth fan, with the little dartmouth pencils and all, and I only know her decently, like we talk about school work, grades, teachers, and such, but not anything deep. The thing is, I want to tell her to find someone who knows her better, but I dont think that she ...erm, has anyone else to write it for her...

So I'm a pretty good writer and I think I have some good ideas about what I would want written for ME, but what should I write for her? I mean, she's a nice person, just very school obsessed, and I dont think I'm applying to Dartmouth. I kinda think, wth, I might as well delineate her as a unique, brilliant, compassionate, quirky person, but I dont want to white lie.

So what should I do? I know someone will say be honest, but she will seriously break down if she doesnt get in and I will feel guilty. And she literally doesnt have anyone at our school who knows her really well, but that's not because she's stuck up or anything. So I cant hint that I wouldnt be a good person to do it, because I do think that unfortunately I can do it better than anyone else.

Wow you sound like a really nice friend! I'm sorry have no advice to give since i'm applying this year (and so could really use some advice myself) but just wanted to pop in and say that.. :P

Yeah, that really is a tough position; I don't envy you. If it makes you feel better, bear in mind that it probably won't make or break her; I'm sure everyone is spoken of very highly in those letters, and they blend together. Just speak about her good qualities, and mention her genuine love of Dartmouth.

Good point - I do know its by far her first choice, I can build on that. They just want anecdotal personal stories, and I dont know whether to fabricate it and how to fabricate it.

I'd be pretty offended.

That being said, you realize that a peer eval probably has as much weight as a phys ed final. So stop stressing out about it and give it to any friend.

Be honest in your evaluation. Those who read the evaluations are experts at that. They will probably be able to see through your recommendation anyway if you are not candid enough.
