Peer Recs

How much does the peer recommendation matter for admissions? I kind of get the feeling it can't help someone gain admission, rather it gives the admissions folk an idea of who you are. My friend wrote a pretty unique recommedation for me (to be honest, I'm no expert on these, so maybe its just your typical rec), so I was wondering if this would help me at all. Thanks.

I'd imagine it matters less than GPA/courses you took and your own essay, but what it gives the adcom is a better idea of who you are as a whole person. What qualities is your peer highlighting? Dartmouth is a community where relationships to other students/community are extrememly important... in that regard, the peer apps are purposeful.

As for a "unique" peer rec, 1) you're not supposed to see/know the contents and 2) I'm sure it is not "groundbreaking"... but then again, it shouldn't be. I say don't worry about it, as long as your friend was honest, but complimentatry of you.

are u guys afraid your friends might get you some how?? my close friend i have known for 2 years, is a prankster, after i gave him my rec, he told me he wasn't going to type it and his "penmenship" isn't the best, and also, i am afraid he might write something bad and think it's funny while the admin sees it as an attack on my personalities. i am so worrieD~!!!~!!~

I didn't want to read his rec, just because I dont like reading stuff like that, but he really wanted me to so i did. I know its nothing groundbreaking, but I thought it was just a nice rec. I'm not worried or anything. I was just curious how the adcoms use the recs and if theyre an important aspect of the application. thanks

You should read A is for Admission...it is written by an ex dartmouth adcom. He said that only once(that he remeberred) did a letter prevent a student from entering the school(the person writing the letter was not a friend...and just said all of this stuff about how stuck up the student was and how he assumed everyone loved him.) The letter either brings out your personnality or proves more about what the rest of your application shows (ex. if you spend half of your app. bragging about math, and your friend talks about how you are oppsessed with math...it will just further their knowledge and belief). In all honesty, my belief is that it can only help you. Just know who your friends are.

Yeah guess we've just need to have a little faith in our friends..
Anyway I actually got my boyfriend to write it for me and that joker actually mentioned good table etiqette or something.. lol..
